(Vincent 1; Moses 2; Moses 3,. Nathan 4,. Moses 5,. Nathan 6,. William E. 7;. Fred Arba 8,. Harold McKinley 9)

IX. HAROLD McKINLEY STILSON was the son of Fred Arba Stilson and Nora Belle Whipple. He was b. June 8, 1902 in Littlerock, Thurston, WA, m. November 16, 1924 Mildred Frances Roberts in Chehalis, WA, d. Apri123, 1981 and is buried at the Napavine Cemetery. He was a shingleweaver, and a mail carrier. She was the daughter of William Lieue Roberts and Mary Catherine Weitzell.

The wedding announcement carried in the Friday issue of the Lewis County Advocate dated November 21, 1924 reports the wedding of Mildred Frances Roberts and Harold M. Stilson in Chehalis, Washington on November 16, 1924. "Miss Mildred Frances Roberts, daughter of Mrs .Mary Roberts, became the bride of HaroldM. Stilson Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Dr. E.M. Randall of the First Methodist church reading the service in the presence of about 50 relatives and friends. The marriage was solemnized at the new home of the young couple at 856 Geary Street. The bride, charming in a gown of white satin and fur, was attended by Miss Zylpha Duncan as bridesmaid. John Allen performed the services of best man. Following the ceremony an informal reception was held and a buffet luncheon was served. Mrs. Stilson has been a teacher and has a wide circle of friends. Mr. Stilson formerly lived at Forest, but is now in the service of the Chehalis post office as a carrier. "

Daughter Rosemary recalls that, "when dad was 22 years old he met mother at a local dance. He was playing the bass fiddle in the band and saw her dancing by with her curly red hair shining and her saucy eyes flirting. He got his cousin to take his place for a chorus or two and asked her for a dance. A few months later they were married. Mother was 29 years old, as she had been teaching school and taking care of her parents who were William Lieue' and Mary Catherine (Weitzell) Roberts. Her father passed away in 1923 so she felt it was time to have a family of her own. Dad and Mother were married November 16, 1924, and until her death in 1939, Grandma Roberts lived with them. At the time of their marriage dad was carrying mail from Chehalis to Morton, WA. When that contract ended, he drove a meat delivery truck out into the countryside as he had also learned the meat-cutting trade. After that he went back to shingle weaving until the depression of 1929. They were living at Pacific Beach, WA where he and his brother Bob had built homes from lumber salvaged. Since there was no work to be found, they gathered up the children and grandma and moved back to grandma's eight acre stump range near Chehalis. There we weathered out the tough years in blissful ignorance of our state of poverty, as everyone was in the same fix and we thought it was normal. Dad was able to get into the Civilian Conservation Corps about 1932 and was soon promoted to mess sergeant due to his knowledge of meat cutting. He actually didn'tknow how to boil water, sohe and mother frantically worked out a few recipes for feeding 100 instead of 10. When the Great Depression subsided and the lumber industry recovered, dad went back to sawing shingles at Aloha, Grays Harbor Co., Washington where we lived (at Carlisle) from 1940 unti11944. At that time dad successfully bid on a " Star Route " mail delivery from Hoquiam to the Lake Quinault area, from which he retired after 17 years .

In an excerpt of his personal history, Hal writes: "I was born at home on Newaukum Hill, Washington State, March 30, 1926. My mother was somewhat along in years, as judged by the standards of the time, having waited to give birth until a female doctor, in this case, Dr. Emma, could be in attendance.

We moved to Chehalis, Washington followed by a short sojourn in Pacific Beach, Washington, where we lived in a house that Dad built of lumber salvaged from a stricken coastal cargo vessel and shingles rescuedfrom an Aloha Lumber Company dry kiln fire. Iwas reared on the seven acre stump ranch where I was born and attended the first 8 grades at Newaukum Hill grade school. My activities included the chores that grew in complexity from fiLling the wood box and feeding the livestock to milking the cows and doing the garden work and haying that came seasonaLly upon us .The cow milking started at an early age to appease my mother whose main comment to me from the time I learned the English language was, "I can't wait until you're old enough to do the milking. "

My sisters and I walked one-half mile to and from a two-room school house where our genteel young female teachers suffered through the aroma of farming youngsters baking in the heat of a huge wood heater.

One of my uncles lived nearby the school, and he did such chores for the school as sawing and chopping the winter's wood supply and mowing the grass left standing after recess sessions of Red Rover and Run Sheep Run. "

The history continues, "Our social life centered around the Newaukum Grange where the patrons condoned the young children who ran and slid on the dance floor; and as Aunt Essie and Aunt Carrie did for me, the older children were taught the two step and fox trot to the twang and thump of home grown."music

He served in the Nary for two years and returned to attend Washington State CoLlege in PuLlman and obtained a teaching degree in English Education. He later worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Lake Quinault, Washington and then to workfor the State of Washington, Division of Forestry in Olympia. The next years found them living in a variety of locations from Aurora, Oregon to Tswassin B. C. and Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
