STILSONS/STILLSONS

With in these records, you shall find names and sources, from the Stilson/Stillson bk, by Christie Stilson; brought to you by Margaret Lee.

The following records were acquired from a variety of sources. They are listed here because there has been no documentation made to verify a connection between the person listed and the established family tree. It is hoped that the information provided will help others working on their family history to make some connections.

Some of the referenced sources are the IGI (International Genealogical Index) and ancestral files. These are the computerized listings of the Stilsons which are included in the LDS family history program. The validity and accuracy of the documentation in these files is open to some speculation. Some of the IGI information refers to Vital Records or birth/marriage records. While others are submitted to the computer program by members. Fortunately, the persons submitting the information often included their name and address. Whenever possible we made the effort to contact the submitter and determine what sources they had used to establish their information. However, even vital records and other government documentation can be in error. There are many instances where the double LL spelling may be in error, or a first name was incorrectly recorded. We have endeavored to be as careful as possible, and whenever clear evidence for a connection was not established, we included the person in this chapter. We also included some editorial comments and speculations which we hope might assist other investigators in their pursuit. It should also be noted that the IGI and ancestral files list microfilm and microfiche reference numbers. Due to the magnitude of this project, these were not researched individually. So where the reference source lists IGI and/or ancestral files, it is advisable that these files be accessed and the reference information investigated.

We have tried to cross reference the parents with the children so both are listed separately. Also census records listed are partial, not all census indexes for every state have been checked. When possible, other Stilson/Stillson members living in the same town or county are mentioned. It is recommended that the investigator obtain a copy of the documents to ascertain family connections. Unfortunately, it was impossible for us to fully research all these avenues.

Good searching!

Civil War Veterans

The 1890 Census Records of the Civil War Veterans and Spouses was done independently of the 1890 general census (most of the general census was destroyed by a fire.) The following were included in the list published by Bryan Dilts, 1984, titled, NY CENSUS RECORDS OF CIVIL WAR VETERANS & SPOUSES and the placement of these individuals cannot be confirmed within the above text.

Rosanna Stilson, Cayuga, Auburn, N.Y. (?wife of Charles Addison Stillson)

Horace Stilson, Cayuga, Auburn, N.Y. (possibly the son of Sylvanus who was born in 1842 in Illinois. He would have been the right age for Civil War.) See information below also on the first name Horace and census records.

Henry C. Stilson, Thompkins, Groton, N.Y. (The only Stilson recorded that would fall in the right age for Civil War involvement was Henry the son of Andrew, and the grandson of Andrew. Henry's father Andrew was born in 1801, no birth is listed for Henry, but by deduction he could easily have been born in the 1830's or later.)

Early English Records

The following Stilson's were mentioned in the 1988 edition of the Family Registry which is on microfiche at the offices of the L.D.S. church. An obvious note here is that while there were many thousands of people listed, all counties were searched and few Stilson names were found. There seems to be no concentration in anyone area.)

EDITORS NOTE: A number of surnames were listed in the 1820 census with a two LL spelling which we know had been spelled with a single L. It appears that the census taker may have errored in the recording of the correct spelling of the name. Many other interesting and diverse differences have also been noted. If all of these unknown factors were to be tracked down, this volume would not be published for another century. The information is included so that others might find it of value for future clues to your family history.

The 1790 census lists the head of household and family members are shown by grouping as to their age and sex. The index was used for the information on the 1810,1820, 1830,1840 and 1850 census records. Each listing references a three digit page number of the original census. These documents can be accessed on microfiche and ordered from the Family History Library. We have made notation, when applicable, of other Stilson names that are listed as residing in the same town, since it is likely that some of these may be close kin. The 1850 census lists the head of the household and the different surnames in that household. For more information you can contact a nearby family history center and inquire about ordering the appropriate films.

A great many of the census listings could apply to one of several different family members by the same name. They have also been compiled here for your research purposes.

NOTE: The abbreviation IGI refers to the International Genealogical Index used by the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The information from this source is compiled by people working on family histories and mayor may not have been thoroughly verified.

----STILSON
Early Conn. Marriages by Frederick Bailey Gen. Publishing lists the marriage of Austin Brunhson with -Stilson, between January 20, 1790 and September 16, 1791.)

A.J. STILSON
SLC Film Number 392,699, for Wayne County , Pennsylvania lists teachers working for the public schools of Honesdale in that County. A.J. Stilson taught there in 1849 and 1850 in schools one and three.

A.K. STILLSON
This listing is the 1840 New York census under Lansignburg, Rensselaer County , N .Y .

A. MORRELL STILLSON
The 1850 census for Paris, Portage County, Ohio taken on November 1 of that year show the following family tree. A. Morrell Stillson, aged 48 years, born in New York (about 1802), a laborer. Wife Aurilla P. Stillson aged 44 years, b. in New York. Children: George E., a boatman, aged 19 years, born in New York (about 1831)., Eliza J. aged 17 years, born in Ohio, (about 1833), Julia A., aged 14 years b. in Ohio (about 1836) and Ashbury , aged 11, born in Ohio (about 1839). The family apparently came to Ohio from New York between the birth of George E. and Eliza J., so between 1831 and 1833. Also living in Portage County , in Rootstown are Charles M. Stillson, Philo Stillson, Cyrus Stillson and George Stilson.

AARON STILSON
Samuel Stilson had a son Aaron Stilson. Record has it he married and had a daughter that died along with his wife. Aaron died in 1816. There are no other records of Aaron Stilson's. However, the 1790 Census of Fairfield County, Newtown Town lists an Aaron Stilson. Also included in the census is the report that the household comprised one free white male of 16 years or older, including the head of the household, two white females under the age of 16 years and four free white females including heads of families. The name of Aaron H. Stilson appears again in the 1840 census in Groton, Tompkins County , New York. Also listed for the same town is a Juston Stilson. Perhaps this younger Aaron could have been a son of Aaron that has not previously been reported. In the 1850 census Aaron H. Stilson is listed as residing in Groton, Tompkins County, New York.

ABIGAIL STILLSON
Newtown Vital Records show an Abigail Stillson's death on August 10, 1736. She was not the wife of Vincent.

The 1850 census lists an Abigail Stillson residing in Parma, "Mon." (either Monroe or Montgomery) County. There is no other Abigail Stilson in the lineage so far that fits this census and location. It is noted that other Stillson's listed as residents of Parma, Ohio are an Elmira Stillson and a John L. Stillson.

The IGI lists an Abigail Jane Stilson b. October 14, 1837 in Nottingham Twp., Rockingham, New Hampshire, daughter of Daniel B. Stilson and Adaline French.

ABEL STILSON
The following was derived from census index lists. The 1790 index for the town of Sandgate, Bennington County, VT lists Abel Stilson and his household which consists of I male over age 16 and two females. Also in the town of Sandgate are Luther Stillson and Comfort Stillson. The 1800 census for Sandgate, Bennington Co., VT shows Abel Stillson and family listed as one male under 10 years, I male 26-45 years, three females under 10 and one female 26-45 years. Also listed in the town of Sandgate are Comfort Stillson and Luther Stillson. The 1810 census lists a Jabez Stilson, which might well be an incorrect spelling for Abel Stilson. He is living in Sandgate, Bennington Co. VT. Possibly the son of Luther Stilson, also of Sandgate. See Luther in this Unplaced section. Abel continues to appear in the 1820, 1830, 1840 census in Sandgate, VT. Not in the 1850 census.

Sandgate City Yard, Sandgate Vt., SLC FHL Film #0027747 reports: "Abel Stillson (b. about 1755) d. December 6, 1840 in the 75th year of his age. Betty Stilson wife of Abel Stillson died December 18, 1846, aged 80 years. Lydia, daughter of Abel and Betty Stillson died April 17, 1812, aged 2 years 7 months and 7 days and granddaughter of Reuben and Lydia Thomas. Jerusha died December 16, 1805 in the 6th year, daughter of Abel and Lois Stillson. Walter Stillson died August 8, 1796, aged 25 years, 6 months and II days. Mrs. Walter Stilson died _.Reuben Thomas, father of Betty Stilson is reported as being "Reuben Thomas Esquire, one of the first settlers in Sandgate who moved into Sandgate at 30 years of age and departed this life January II, 1806 aged 66 years. Lydia consort of Reuben Thomas died December 3, 1828 in her 86th year ofher age. The census for 1840 for Sandgate, Bennington County, Vermont shows

Abel & Marion Stilson had an unnamed child on September 23, 1859 in Sunderland, Bennington County, VT. Abel Stilson had son John born February 18, 1860 in Sunderland. Abel and Marion had son William born September 10, 1863 in Sunderland, Bennington, VT. Abel B. Stilson had a son born in 1869. Source: Sunderland Vital Records. The Sunderland Cemetery lists an Abel Stilson b. 1835, d. 1916 and Marione Stilson b. 1842, d. 1922. Russel Stilson is in the 1840 census index for Sunderland, a quick inspection of the actual census did not disclose this individual, but it may have been overlooked. An Abel Stilson was married September 26, 1839 to Hannah Ambler in Danbury , CT. (Source IGI). A record in the New York Biographical Magazine shows that a Hannah Ambler, daughter of J ohn Ambler, was named in her brothers will which was dated April 23, 1859. It lists her husband as Abel Johnson Stilson. A notice of their marriage also appeared in the Danbury News Times paper .

1840 Census shows an Abel Stilson residing in Fairfield, Newtown, CT .

1840 Census for N .Y .State reports an Able G. Stilson in New Wind, Orange County , N .Y .

The 1850 Census lists an Abel Stilson in Albion V., Orleans County, New York.

The 1870 census for Minnesota lists an Abel Stilson in Fountain Twp., Fillmore County, MN. Also in this town was Simon Stilson and his family.

Two letters in the possession of Robert Stilson were received by his family before the turn of the 20th century .The letter was from Mrs. H. V. Hobbie, also known as Alva Stilson Hobbie and the letter is dated February 17, 1899. Her address at the time was 909 East Main St. in Rochester, New York. The letter is addressed to Clarence H. Stilson of New Haven, Connecticut.

Dear Sir:

Being very much interested in the genealogy of the Stilson family I take the liberty of writing to you on the subject.

I have undertaken to trace back our ancestry to the first of the name who settled in New England, and I have already received letters from a number of the different branches of the family.

Will you please give me the christen names of your father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Stilson, with dates of birth and death when known, and the names of ancestors farther back if possible. Does tradition give you Welsh, or Scotch descent?

Any names of your father's, grandfather's or great-grandfather's brothers I would like, as it would help to trace relationship. Any information that you would kindly give me, will be highly appreciated. Trusting that I may hear from you at your earliest convenience, I am, Respectfully yours, Alva Stilson Hobbie. ↑↑

The next letter, dated February 22, 1899 indicates the postal service was very swift. Mrs. Hobbie writes:

My dear Mrs. Stilson: Your answer to my letter of inquiry was received with pleasure. For some time I have been gathering information relative to the Stilsons, from colonial histories, and from letters. I have heard from nine different branches of the family between whom I have not as yet found any relationship. I have been able to place several families in one or the other of two of the branches, but there still remain seven, each standing by itself.

The third generation in this country seems to be the needed one to show the relationship, and it is the most difficult to get. I shall anxiously await a communication from Mr. S. H. Stilson. None to whom I have written, with one exception, has spoken of ever being questioned on the subject of their Stilson genealogy, so it is possible that what I have gleaned might be of use to him as I think he can hardly have that particular information. Perhaps, however, he is only interested in his own particularly branch. I would be very glad if it proved to be of service to him, and trust that the intelligence you think he will give me will throw light on many places that are now dark.

I fell a little diffident in approaching strangers on the subject, although we bear the same name, fearing I may be deemed intrusive, but a charming letter like yours sets one at ease.

Nearly every one has seemed interested, and anxious to help; and occasionally one is enthusiastic as I am, and I confess that I am deeply interested in it. My father, Abel Stilson, was born in Sandgate, VT, January 5, 1818. He is still living, and I think my pride in him, and love for him, first aroused the desire to look up our genealogy.

Thanking you for your prompt and friendly reply, I am, Sincerely yours, Alva Stilson Hobbie.

ABRAHAM STILLSON
There is an Abraham Stillson shown as living in Smithville, Chenago County, New York in the 1820 New York Census. He is the only Stilson/Stillson listed for that town in this census report. There is no other reference to any Abraham Stilsons in this lineage.

ADA STILSON
Ada Stilson m. July 6, 1873 in St. Francois, MO to Edward McCarty. Source: MO Marriage records via IGI.

ADALINE STILSON
The 1850 Census for New York state census as a resident in Canisteo, Steuben County, New York. The only other Adaline found is the daughter ofMarcus Stillson, and she was born about 1846, so would have been too young for this census. However, there might be some connection with the family of Cyrenus since it was often a practice that nieces and nephews were named after their aunts or uncles as well as grandparents.

There is an Adeline E. Stilson whose marriage is recorded in the LDS church sealing records as August 17, 1839 in Liverpool, New York, to Neal M. Duffie Lathrop.

AGER/AGUR STILSON
Ager Stilson appears in the 1830 census index records for Maine, but not the 1790 records and no mention in the 1850 census. The actual census records have not yet been examined. Ager is listed in Sidney, Kennebec, Maine. The only other listing is shown in Sidney for Eil (probably son Eli). His son Lemuel Stilson is listed in Waterville, Kennebec, Maine.

Other Stilsons in other towns in Kennebec County are Dorothy L. Stilson, Elisha Stilson, Nathan Stilson, Samuel Stilson and Turner Stilson. The 1820 census records were examined for Kennebec County. The only Stilson that this editor found was Dorothy L. Stilson, who is listed as a widow living in the town ofValssalboro. She is enumerated as living with one male under age 10 years, one male 26- 45 years, and one female under 10 years, one female 10- 16 years, one female 26-44 which would be Dorothy. They are listed as involved in manufacturing. This census does not list names of children, nor origin of birth. IGI reports the following. Sources are birth records. Wife is Betsey. All births are recorded in Civil, Sidney, Kennebec, Maine.

More speculation! Could Ager/Agur/Agar be the son of Elijah, the son of Joseph. Fairfield, CT vital records show the son of Elijah written in longhand, the name Agar appears much the same as Azur. Could Agar and Azur be the same individual?

1. Amose/Amos/Ambrose? b. 1793 in Maine. Ambrose Stilson m. Hannah- ' date unknown, Hannah was born June 8, 1809 in Civil, Maine. Source: Civil birth records.

The IGI lists Ambrose Stilson b. June 9, 1805 in Civil, Sidney, Kennebec, Maine, the son of Ager/Agur Stilson. Source: Maine birth records. The IGI lists Ambrose Stilson father of a son Alfred R. Stilson born in Maine in 1840. It also shows that Ambrose was the father of Alonzo Stilson born in Maine in 1845.

Mary Ellen, b. November 9, 1843 in Civil, ME. Possibly died young because another daughter had same name.

Mary Ellen b. November 2, 1851 in Civil, ME

Betsey Stilson is listed in Waterville, Kennebec County and another (or duplicate) Betsey Stilson is shown in Sidney, Maine in the 1850 census. This was before her marriage to Leroy Pierce. (The IGI shows a Betsey Stilson, daughter of Ager Stilson b. July 1,1797 in Civil, ME. per birth records of Maine.)

5. Ely Stilson b. June 30, 1799 in Civil, Sidney, Kennebec, Maine. Source is birth records for Civil, Maine. Eli Stilson shown in 1830 census for Civil, Maine and in the 1850 census he is listed in Harmony, Some- County, Maine.

7. Cyras Stilson b. February 23, 1801 in Civil, Sidney, Kennebec, Maine. Source: County birth & christening records.

Because of the time difference, it could be that the below referenced Cyrus was not the above Cyras, but a son or grandson of him.

The grandson ofCyrus Stilson, Donald Wyman Stilson of Nederland, Colorado reports the following: Cyrus Stilson and his wife Sarah Wyman Stilson, lived on a farm near Augusta, Maine. There were three children, Ada, Fred and Harold Wyman. Neither Ada nor Fred had children. Harold Wyman was born in 1883 and Ada and Fred were older than he. Harold had only one son, Donald Wyman Stilson. Cyrus and Sarah Wyman and their daughter Ada and her husband moved to Walsenburg, CO about the turn of the century .Then at the time of the first world war they moved again to Corona, California. Then sometime in the twenties or early thirties they moved to Los Angeles. Donald Wyman Stilson was born and grew up in San Pedro, CA. Don has a son Rohn that currently lives in Sandpoint, Idaho, his son Thomas lives in San Marcos, CA and his daughter Anne Stilson Cope lives in Denver. 10. Irey or Ira Stilson b. April 16, 1807 in Maine. An Ira Stilson is listed in the 1850 census for Maine, living in Portland, Cumberland County .An Ira Stilson, probably the same person as Irey Stilson, m. Mary -and had a son Charles Henry Stilson b. February 17, 1835 in Civil, Maine. Source ME birth records via IGI. Also a daughter Georgianna b. July 14, 1848, source ME birth records via IGI.

January 28, 1843 in Calais, Washington Co., ME to Lucinda B. Tuttle. Sarah E. Stilson m. George H. Beeson on March 14, 1869 per Civil, ME marriage records.

Records from Maine history show a confusing piece of information. One record shows an Asel Stilson b. about 1810 in Sidney, ME m. to Annie Taylor b. about 1810 in Sidney, ME who had a son Hiram D. Stilson b. October 28, 1833 in Harmony, ME and d. March 30, 1894 in Gorham, N.H. Could this be another child of Ager? The confusion is multiplied by another record that shows Eli Stilson b. about 1810 m. to Lydia Doe b. about 1810 in Sidney, ME and having a son Hiram D. b. October 28, 1833 in Athens, ME. It appears to be the same Hiram, but two sets ofparents! Per History of New Hampshire, Hiram D. Stilson m. late in his life on August 16, 1892 in Gorham, NH to Mrs. Emeline Evans and he d. March 30, 1894 in Gorham. Emeline was b. October 21, 1836 in Stark, NH and died April 30, 1902 in Gorham, NH.

ALFRED R. STILSON
Birth records show Alfred R. Stilson b. December 23, 1840 in Civil, Sidney, Kennebec, ME, the son of Ambrose Stilson and his wife Hannah.

AMANDA STILSON
Amanda Stilson is listed in the 1850 census for N. Y .as a resident of Franklin, Delaware County, New York. Her age is 36 years which would put her year of birth at about 1814. She is shown living in the household of Herman Hitchcock with his wife Mary and one year old son Herbert which happens to be next door to William A. Stilson. Others listed in Franklin, Delaware County during this census year include Hiram Stilson, Lucien Stilson, Lyman Stillson, and Ansel Stilson. Speculation --could Amanda be the daughter of Eli?

The IGI lists an Amanda Stilson m. in 1855 in Maine to Charles Henry Card.

Amanda Stillson, b. in Norway about 1820, the wife of Itop Stillson, also born in Norway. Had sons John and Steele Stillson. See Itop Stillson in this chapter .

AMNA STILSON
This listing appears in the 1850 census for Ohio. Perhaps a misinterpretation of another name such as Anna? This person appears in Coitsville, Mahoning County ,Ohio. No other Stilsons appear in this town but in Mahoning County for this census there is also a Herman, Luther, Samuel 0. and William F. Stilson

ANDREW STILSON
An Andrew Stillson is shown in Yate County, New York history as the son of Salmon Stillson. See Salmon.
