I recently acquired a small pamphlet, printed in 1909, detailing the roster of the Hartwell T. Martyn chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic. It listed all the current members as well as the deceased and gave a short biography of the man after whom the chapter was named. Below is a transcription of the information within this pamphlet.

HARTWELL T. MARYTYN
Son of Tyler Martyn, born at Canton, New York, August 23d, 1841. Enlisted in (“Scott’s 900”) 11th N.Y. Cavalry, under Col. S. P. Remington, in July , 1862, and upon the organization of that regiment was assigned to Co. D., which was stationed near Washington D.C. Was taken prisoner of war, at Edward’ Ferry, Maryland, in August 1863. He, with others, was taken 150 miles over the blue Ridge mountains, there put on the cars for Richmond, Va; was taken to Belle Island, where there were 12,000 prisoners confined on 2 ˝ acres of ground, two thirds of whom had no tents or shelter of any kind, slept on the ground, and in the winter the strongest would go around in the morning and help up the weak, sickly ones, whose clothes had frozen to the ground and who were unable to get up. The fare, which at first was stinking meat, and often times mule at that, with poor bread, grew from worse to worse, until, for the last two months, they had nothing but corn meal wet with cold water. When taken prisoner he weighed 167 lbs; when exchanged, March 13, 1864, as prisoner of war, he weighed only 93 lbs., and was transferred to the hospital at Annapolis, Md., where he had the smallpox, caught on the way down, from the effects of which he never fully recovered.
In August, 1864, he rejoined his regiment at New Orleans, where he was soon after taken with fever, from which it soon became evident he could not recover while South. He was then ordered North, and left New Orleans on the Steamer North America, which foundered off the coast of Florida, December 23, 1864, with 296 soldiers on board, the captain and part of the crew only being saved.
