St. Lawrence County Farmers’ Insurance Company statement of losses for 1904:
Office of the St. Lawrence County Farmers’ Insurance Company
Ogdensburg, NY February 20th, 1905
TO OUR MEMBERS:
We send you enclosed our report and assessment for the year 1904. You will see in our statement that our losses for January and December are more than any two months in the year. It is impossible to know what was the cause. The members who had the losses do not know. We have losses by lighting and losses by unavoidable accident. These we know the cause of but cannot prevent. We have losses supposed to come from defective chimneys. We have losses supposed to come from overheated stoves. We have losses supposed to come from something out of the order with the stove pipes. We have losses supposed to come from some defect in the lantern. Now, can our members in the future years prevent or lessen the whole or a part of these losses? If they can it will be a saving for this company and a saving in many ways for the members who would have the losses. We are all well paid for our care in everything we do to prevent a loss of our buildings by fire. Our assessment for the year is $2.79 on each one thousand dollars for the year. This company is today one of the great Co-operative Insurance Companies of this State. It has today a membership of more than six thousand farmers. This company has now insured the farmers of this county for nineteen years and has saved them many thousands of dollars in the cost of insurance. This company has insured more farmers in these years than any other Co-operative Insurance company in this state. This company’s financial standing and in the making of its assessments and doing its work as no superior. We have made an excellent beginning with but few losses so far this year. Let us all hope that this will be a better year than last year. I am requested by our Board of Directors to say to you that they trust that you may all have a prosperous year.
I am yours respectfully,
Nathaniel Wells, Secretary
