Stephen Crosby 1742-1839
Stephen had a butchers shop at the bottom of King Street, Robin Hood's Bay next to the old Post Office and opposite the Kings Arms where his daughter, Martha, was landlady helped by her husband, John Thompson, the local carrier. Stephen also had a butchers shop in the Whitby Shambles over the Seven Stars public house which he also owned.
He was a man of property and when he died he left the above properties and others to the surviving members of his family and their kin. He also had a half share in the brigantine The Brittania. He was a churchwarden along with William Robinson and, 1823-4, with John Jillson. This was during the period the church was being rebuilt as shown in the Churchwarden accounts.
Because of his property interests Stephen was a prominent ratepayer.
His Will demonstrated something of his wealth.
