Bob and Berta's Story

John Robert (Bob) Stringfellow Sr. was born into a large family on a farm in Marion County, Georgia on August 20, 1875. His parents were John Stringfellow and Martha Rutherford. The farm was near Buena Vista, Georgia in the area of Boxsprings. In their early years the family would walk down to the spring (hence the name Boxsprings) to get their water. Growing up, Bob learned the value of work, and the basics of farming from his Dad. All the children helped out in the never ending work that always needs to be done on a farm.

When Bob was 21 years old, near the end of 1896, he left home and moved to what was then Henry County, Alabama, like his brother Nathaniel (Nat) Stringfellow had done earlier. His girlfriend Samantha Alberta (Berta) Hand had also moved to this same area, and he wanted to be nearer her also.

About a year later Bob married Berta on December, 12, 1897. Bob made a living at this time working on farms in the area. With the money that he and Berta had saved, they bought a log house, with 112 acres near Pansey, Alabama. This happened sometime before 1901. By this time Effie Mae had already been born. Vera Winna and John Louie were born in that log home. As the home became too small, they built a new home on the property before 1906, when Quida was born.

Over the next decade, with the family growing even larger, they added onto the house. Berta's mother, Mary Ann Livingston Hand, and Berta's sister Avie Hand came to live with Berta. The home "became a large white bungalow filled with love and laughter and happy memories." [source-AS]

As the years went on, Bob continued to farm until the age of 85. Most of the children moved away from the farm, but this house was never empty or lonely. On Sundays and Holidays this old white bungalow was filled with the children and grandchildren visiting, eating, talking and playing. In the summers, grandchildren like myself, cherished going to Grandmas to spend the week on the old family farm. All in all Bob and Berta had 28 grandchildren. Through the years, the family began to move away to Texas, Florida, New Jersey, Georgia and other locations. The old family farm is still there however and is now owned by one of John Louie's children.
