Stubbs DNA Project
British DNA Projects

The Stubbs surname originated in England. Stubbses emigrated to America from the
earliest days of the colonies, some arriving before the American
Revolution. We have assembled links to a few of the known lines that
have websites.

Stubbs DNA Project
Recent advances in genetic testing are opening new frontiers in genealogical
research. Family research that relied solely on historical
documents can now be supplemented by genetic testing. Do all
Stubbs in England derive from a common Stubbs ancestor? Was
the Stubbs name adopted by multiple lines? Read about this exciting new
technology and get an update on the Stubbs DNA Project by selecting the
links on the left side of the page. Check out British DNA
studies here.
New results just in: a genetic link has been shown between the Richard Stubbs
family of Hull, MA and the Stubbs Everett line, see the notes
at the bottom of the Results
page on the Stubbs DNA Project page.

Stubbs-Minor Line
Thomas Stubbs arrived in Pennsylvania ca.1713. He was christened in
Eldersfield, Worcestershire, England in 1692, but he later became a
convinced Quaker. In the new world he married Mary Minor, an
immigrant from Ireland. Thomas and Mary's grandson, William Penn
Attmore, Jr. wrote the first known genealogy for this line in 1792.
While some of their children remained in Pennsylvania, others moved to
North Carolina. They later moved to the Quaker settlement in
Wrightsborough, Georgia. Finally, most of their descendants left
Georgia around 1805 for the newly formed state of Ohio and other western
states. Descendants of Thomas'
eldest son, Daniel, needed for the DNA study to fill in data for this line.
|
Stubbs-Everett Line
Thomas Stubbs (1695-1738) and Mary Everett settled in North Carolina.
Data from the Stubbs DNA Project show a likely ancestral home for this line
in Cheshire, England and that the line is an independent Stubbs branch and
is not directly descended from the John Stubbs of Cappahosic Line.
|
John Stubbs of Cappahosic, Gloucester County, VA Line
This is a large southern Stubbs line descended from John Stubbs of Cappahosic,
VA. William Carter Stubbs published a book on this family in 1902.
John Stubbs purchased two shares of the Virginia Company of London in 1620.
John Stubbs, likely his son, settled in Virginia as early as 1652.
|
Stubbs Line of Norfolk, England
A descendent of this line shows DNA matching neither the Stubbs-Minor Line nor
the John Stubbs of Cappahosic Line. Further research is needed on this line.
|
Joel Henry Stubbs of Newton County, GA Line
This line dates to 1802 in Newton County, GA. Genetic testing indicates
that this line is independent of the Stubbs-Minor, Stubbs-Everett and Stubbs
of Cappahosic Lines, although this line may connect to the others in England.
|
Stubbs in Cheshire England
Cheshire has one of the largest numbers of Stubbs in England. DNA may
show if there is a connection to the new world Stubbs Lines.
