CHRISTIAN (STEINBACH) STEINBAUGH

The name of Steinbach was changed to Steinbaugh after they came to the United States.

Christian Steinbaugh, son of John Phillip Steinbaugh and Catherine Hild, was born December 8, 1827 in Wimmenau, Province of Lower Rhine (Bas Rhin), Alsace Lorraine, France. His birth certificate was in the possession of his daughter, Clara Belle Steinbaugh, until destroyed by fire. His birth certificate had the name Steinbach and was written in French. When 6 weeks old, in January 1828, his parents brought him to the United States and settled at Huntington, Indiana.

He married Sussanah Fashbaugh (5/19, 1830 - 2/3, 1866). Sussanah came from a large family and had cousins around Swanton, Ohio. Her mother's name was Elizabeth Fashbaugh. Her father was Peter Fashbaugh.

Sussanah s sister, Eva married John Otto Plettner, who immigrated from Germany to avoid military service. They lived at Ai, Ohio and had four children; Otto Jr., Augusta, Amanda and Mary Elizabeth.

Otto Plettner, Jr. married Winnie Holmes from Lodi,Ind. and they had a son and a daughter. Both are burried in Fulton County, Ohio.

Augusta married a Alpha C. Smith. Burried Fulton County, Ohio.

Amanda Plettner married Frank Harger and they had three children, Hope, Garland and Harold.

Mary Elizabeth Plettner married Edward Hoodless and they had a son, Otto, and a daughter Isyma Rowe Tuggle, who lives in Swanton, Ohio.

Another sister Sarah Fashbaugh married Mr. Klein and 1ived near Swanton and Ai, Ohio. A sister Barbara never married. One brother was named William Fashbaugh and another was Lewis Fashbaugh, who died in the Civil war. There were other sisters and brothers of Sussanah Fashbaugh but no data is available.

Christian and Sussanah moved to Delta, Ohio, Lafayette, Ind., Howard, Ind. and Rockville, Ind. At Rockville, Christian was sheriff for 2 years after which they moved to Cecil, Ohio, returning later to Lodi, or Waterman, Ind.

Christian was at one time canal boat captain on the Wabash-Erie Canal, which entered the Wabash River at Howard, Indiana. He was a farmer, grain dealer, Sheriff (1872-1874) and Trustee of Parke County, Indiana. They had seven children: Silas (died an as infant), Alice (married John Evans), Elizabeth (married Silas Good), Sarah Jane (died at 3 years old), Clara Belle (married George DeVerter), C1ayton L.(married Luella Savage) and Florence (married Henry Issac DECK).

After the death of his first wife, Christian Steinbaugh married second time to Elizabeth Valentine, daughter of Grove Valentine and Hannah Harrison of Summit County, Ohio. They were married February 2, 1871 in Fulton County, Ohio. To this union were born two children, a son, Charles and a daughter, Fannie.

Christian Steinbaugh died at Lodi, (Waterman), Indiana on May 18, 1897. Sussanah died February 3, 1866.  Both Christian and his first wife, Sussanah Fashbaugh, are buried in the Miller Cemetery at Lodi, Ind.  Elizabeth Valentine Steinbaugh is burried in Wood County, Ohio.
