| John
Blakely came to Kortright about 1798
from Schenectady. He was the father of five sons,
William, James, John, George and David. William, who was born in
1781 in Washington Co., New York, moved to
Kortright, Delaware County, in 1808 when quite a
young man. He purchased a farm of about nine
hundred acres. At the time of his advent in the
town it was in a very primitive state, most of
the land being covered with timber, requiring the
expenditure of much energy and time to bring it
under cultivation in which he did.
"The
turnpike", running from Catskill, on the
Hudson, to the Susquehanna, afforded good
facilities for keeping a hotel, and William there
kept a tavern for forty years, which was the
first one in the town of Kortright and soon
became noted as one of the most prosperous
business men of his day. He raised a family of
nine children - all of whom grew to maturity, but
only five are known.
His wife, Nancy
McDonald, was born in 1791 and died on 20 Feb
1855 in Kortright, and was buried in Blakely Cemetery, Kortright, Delaware, New
York, followed shortly by her husband William who
at the age of 78 on 20 Apr 1855.
