Blakey of Kortright, Delaware Co., NY

John Blakely came to Kortright about 1798 from Schenectady. He was the father of five sons, William, James, John, George and David.

William, who was born in 1781 in Washington Co., New York, moved to Kortright, Delaware County, in 1808 when quite a young man. He purchased a farm of about nine hundred acres. At the time of his advent in the town it was in a very primitive state, most of the land being covered with timber, requiring the expenditure of much energy and time to bring it under cultivation in which he did.

"The turnpike", running from Catskill, on the Hudson, to the Susquehanna, afforded good facilities for keeping a hotel, and William there kept a tavern for forty years, which was the first one in the town of Kortright and soon became noted as one of the most prosperous business men of his day. He raised a family of nine children - all of whom grew to maturity, but only five are known.

His wife, Nancy McDonald, was born in 1791 and died on 20 Feb 1855 in Kortright, and was buried in Blakely Cemetery, Kortright, Delaware, New York, followed shortly by her husband William who at the age of 78 on 20 Apr 1855.

  4. Sarah Blakely - born in December of 1818; married Ransom Mitchell, the son of Pierce Mitchell and Abigail (Burr). According to the census records, they resided in Meredith until sometime after 1860 and then removed to Oneonta, Otsego Co., New York. She was laid to rest at Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.
  5. Goldsborough Banyer Blakely - born in 1825 in Kortright; married Elizabeth Mitchell, the daughter of Pierce Mitchell and were the parents of William Pearse; Edwin, Ransom Mitchell, G. Banyer, and Elizabeth M. Blakely. Goldsborough, Elizabeth, and their children Elizabeth and Ransom were buried in Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.

James G. Blakely, the son of William and Nancy (McDonald), was born on 12 Jan 1810 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. He married Susan McAuley who was also born in Kortright and was the daughter of

She was born 23 Jul 1813, and along with James, was listed in the 1860 census residing in Bloomville; 1870 and 1880 residing in Kortright.

James died on 15 Apr 1882 in Kortright, and Susan in 1900. They were both laid to rest in the Blakely Cemetery, Kortright, Delaware Co., New York along with some of their children.

  4. John P. Blakely - born on 18 Jun 1845 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. Counted in a census in 1860 in West Kortright, Delaware, NY; 1880 in Kortright; and 1900 in Kortright. Also listed in his 1900 household are: sisters Jennie born Apr 1848 and Rebecca born Apr 1852; and cousin Charles Peters born Jan 1886. [Biography]

  5. William L. Blakely - born about 1846 in New York; died in 1898 and was buried in Blakely Cemetery. He was counted in a census in 1850 in Kortright; 1860 in West Kortright; and 1870 in Kortright

  6. Jane M. Blakely - born in Apr 1848 in New York; died in 1914 and was buried in Blakely Cemetery, Kortright, Delaware, NY.

Jane Blakely, daughter of William and Nancy (McDonald) was born about 1811 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. She was the first school teacher in Kortright and married John Peters, son of Richard Peters and Susannah (Halstead), in Kortright on 01 Jul 1830.

John was born on 22 Mar 1804 in Stamford, Delaware, New York and in 1850 moved to Bloomville where he purchased a farm from a Mr. Gregory and built a fine farm house where his youngest son was born. He was captain of a militia and was known to the children in the village as "Uncle John."

John died on 17 Sep 1896 in Bloomville, and Jane on 07 Mar 1879. They were buried beside John's parents in the Riverside Cemetery at Bloomville.

  2. Sarah Ann Peters - born on 10 Dec 1833 in Bloomville, Delaware, NY. She was educated at Hobart Seminary and married Henry Hanford. She died on 09 Jan 1852 in Bloomville, and was buried in Bloomville, Delaware, NY.

  3. William Blakely Peters - born on 23 Dec 1837; died on 03 Nov 1904.

  4. Elizabeth Jane Peters - born on 14 Sep 1844; died on 03 Jan 1899.

  5. Susan Frances Peters - born on 06 Oct 1848; died on 27 Mar 1932.

John D. Blakely, son of William and Nancy (McDonald), was born on 19 Oct 1809 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. His father owned a large tract of land in the town of Kortright, part of the Goldsborough and Bunyard Patent. He sold over 300 acres on either side of the homestead to each of his sons, James and John.

It was this farm that John took his bride Sarah Peters, daughter of Richard Peters and Susannah (Halstead) whom he married on 06 Jul 1837 in Tully,Onondaga, NY. In 1863 they sold their farm in Kortright and moved to Tully, Onondaga Co., NY where they lived for several years.

Sarah, who was born on 28 Sep 1809 in Stamford, Delaware, NY, was one of the first persons to study geography in Delaware county and also learned to exquisite needlework while at school. She was an ardent Bible student and interested in current events. She passed away on 07 Apr 1897 in Genoa, Cayuga, New York and was laid to rest in Tully. Her husband John preceded her in death, passing away on 22 Jun 1885.

  1. Richard Peters Blakely - born on 25 Jun 1840 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. He was a veterineraian who also lived in Syracuse. He married Kate Dennison of Orin, New York n 02 Dec 1882. He died on 23 Sep 1887 in Tully, and was buried there.

  2. Nancy Cornelia Blakely - born on 23 Aug 1843; died on 07 Apr 1915.

  3. Susan Jane Blakely - born on 29 Jan 1846 in New York. She died on 12 May 1863 in Kortright, and was buried in Blakely Cemetery. Her remains were moved from Kortright and buried at Tully. Kleinheinz's book lists her year of death as 1861.

  4. Helen Jerusha Blakely - born on 02 Sep 1849; died on 16 Jun 1934.

Nancy Clyde Peters, daughter of Jane (Blakely) and John Peters, was born on 06 Sep 1831 at Rich Hill, near Bloomville, Delaware, NY. She married Samuel McCune, son of John McCune and Catherine (McNaught) on 16 Oct 1850 in Bloomville. Samuel was born on 15 Aug 1823 in Canada, was naturalized on 16 Jul 1849 and lived in Jefferson. He was a merchant and member of the Presbyterian Church. Nancy died on 18 Feb 1854 in Bloomville, and was buried in South Kortright Cemetery. Samuel He died on 15 Oct 1856 in Jefferson, N ew York.

William Blakely Peters, son of Jane (Blakely) and John Peters was born on 23 Dec 1837 in Stamford, Delaware, NY. He purchased a farm at the lower end of Main Street in Bloomville where he built a fine house. He was Postmaster at Bloomville for fourteen years. He married Hannah Rich on her 23rd birthday on 17 July 1861 in South Kortiright. Hannah was the daughter of James Rich and Jane (Southard) and was born 17 Jul 1838 in South Kortright. She died on 02 Apr 1930 in Bloomville, Delaware, NY. William died on 03 Nov 1904 in Bloomville, and both were buried ther

  2. Lizzie Belle Peters "Belle" - born on 29 Dec 1865 in Delaware Co., NY; she was a member of the ME Church, Hobart, NY. On 05 Dec 1895, she married Fred Mabie Lyon who was born on 30 Mar 1865 in Roses Brook, Hobart, New York. He was a banker and was related by marriage to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Queen Elizabeth II's mother.

  3. James Rich Peters - born on 06 Jan 1868 in Bloomville, Delaware, NY. He enlisted in Company B, 21st U.S. Infantry War with Spain and was married to Alice Roth on 23 Mar 1909. Alice died on 20 May 1927 in Oneonta, New York.

  4. Sarah Peters - born on 20 May 1872 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. She graduated from Delaware Academy in Delhi in 1898. According to Carolyn McPherson, Sarah wanted to be a nurse, but her father considered it an unfit profession for young ladies, only one step above the Theater. She met William Hendry Hickok because he boarded at their house in Bloomville, and married him on 22 Apr 1896. William was the son of Benjamin Herkimer Hickok and Rosella (Jones) of Stamford and was born on 22 May 1871 in New York. He was a railroad conductor on the Ulster & Delaware Railroad, a job he held all his life.. He died on 30 Jan 1937 in Oneonta, New York.

 
 

Elizabeth Jane Peters - daughter of Jane (Blakely) and John Peters, was born on 14 Sep 1844 in Bloomville, Delaware, NY. She married Judge Daniel Thomas Arbuckle, son of Nathaniel Arbuckle and Agnes Blair on 22 May 1867 in Bloomville.

Daniel was born in 1837 in Delhi, Delaware, NY and studied law with Colonel Robert Parker of Delhi, an uncle of Judge Amasa Parker of Albany. He came to Delhi and practiced law until he was elected to the county court in 1883, serving until 1888. He died on 09 Mar 1894 in Delhi, Delaware, NY. Elizabeth died on 03 Jan 1899 in Delhi, Delaware, New York.

  1. John Nathaniel Arbuckle - born on 23 Apr 1868 in Delhi, Delaware, NY. He conducted a coal business in Delhi and was owner of a flour and feel mile as well as a retailer in grain and feed. John married Maria D. White who was born on 11 Apr 1866 in Delhi. She is speculated to be the same as listed as the granddaughter of Orrin L. Penfield age 73, and daughter of Margaret White, widow age 35 listed in Delhi in 1880. Maria died on 21 Oct 1931 in Oneonta, NY and was buried in Delhi. John died on 10 Nov 1921 in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

  2. Agnes Arbuckle - born on 06 Apr 1871 in Delhi, Delaware, NY. Agnes was counted in a census in 1880 in Delhi, Delaware, NY. Graduated from Vassar College and was a teacher. She married Frederick Clifford Ward on 07 Jun 1899. Frederick was born on 16 Oct 1867 in Treadwell, NY and died on 28 Jan 1930 in Great Neck, Long Island, New York.

  3. Jane Peters Arbuckle - born on 28 Oct 1873 in Delhi, Delaware, NY. Jane worked with her brother John keeping the books and records and was later Supt. of Wayside School for Girls, Valley Stream, New York for eighteen years; she retired in 1935.

  4. Henry Davie Arbuckle - born on 22 Jun 1880 in Delhi, Delaware, NY. He married (1) Josephine Kellog on 08 May 1902. Josephine was born on 08 May 1882 in Treadwell, NY and died on 16 Mar 1908 in Oneonta, NY. Henry married (2) Goldie A. Bell on 25 Aug 1915. Goldie was born on 17 Oct 1889 in Oneonta, New York.

 
 

Susan Frances Peters, daughter of Jane (Blakely) and John Peters, was born on 06 Oct 1848 in Bloomville, Delaware, NY. She married Hon. Henry Davie son of Henry Davie and Jane Lennox on 15 Jun 1869 in New York. Henry was born on 03 Aug 1833 at Scotch Mountain near Delhi.

Henry opened a law office at the corner of Main and Court St. in Delhi. He and his brother-in-law, Daniel T. Arbuckle formed the law firm of Davie & Archibald. Mr. Davie was postmaster at Delhi for several years. He was elected to the State Assembly for two terms from 1891 to 1892. He was a Democrat and elected by popular vote, although the county was strongly Republican.

Henry died on 12 Oct 1907 in Delhi, Delaware, NY;and Susan on 27 Mar 1932 in Delhi, Delaware, New York.

  1. Ida Elizabeth (Peters) Davie - born on 17 Mar 1882 in Delhi, Delaware, NY. She was an adopted daughter of Susan and Henry. Her natural parents were John Richard Peters & Helen (Burdick). She married Robert Alexander Roberts on 21 Jun 1917 in Delhi, Delaware, NY. Robert was born on 12 Aug 1881 in New York, NY and was son of Robert Glover Roberts of Manchester, England and Sarah Ann Miller of New York, NY. Robert attended Yonkers Military Academy and Nathan Hale School in New London, CT. He was C.S. Clerk for the State Highway Department of New York.

 
 
John Richard Peters, son of Jane (Blakely) and John Peters, was born on 23 Sep 1853 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. He married (1) Helen Maria Burdick on 09 May 1876 in Delhi. Helen was born on 13 Aug 1858 in Delhi, and was the daughter of Clangdon M. and Sarah (Stoughtenbrugh). She was baptised, confirmed and married in the Old Presbyterian at Delhi under the ministry of Rev Dr. James H. Robinson who also baptised and married her daughter Ida. Helen died on 02 Apr 1882 in Delhi, and John married a second time.

  3. William Henry Peters- born on 30 Jul 1879 in Delhi, Delaware, NY. He married (1) Julia Ann Crosby on 26 Oct 1907 in Delhi. Julia was born on 02 Oct 1878 in Delhi, and died on 25 Nov 1909 in Delhi, Delaware, NY. William married (2) Eleanore H. Frisbie who was an Episcopalian on 06 Nov 1912 in Baltimore, Maryland.

John married (2) Julia Rosetta Lorch about 23 Nov 1883. Julia was born on 10 Dec 1860 in Bloomville, Delaware, NY. John died on 03 Feb 1927 in Roscoe, New York.

Nancy Cornelia Blakely, daughter of John D. Blakely and Sarah (Peters), was born on 23 Aug 1843 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. She married Ezbon Lyon Bower on 02 Dec 1868 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. Ezbon was born in Lansing on 08 Nov 1837, the son of Isaac and Sophia (Todd). Church records indicate a child by the same name and parents was christened in January of 1839 in Presbyterian Church, Lansing, Tompkins Co, New York.

They located at a farm at Chile, near Rochester and later on a farm at Skaneateles, Onondaga County, New York, and later lived in lived in Genoa Village, and Oxford, Pennsylvania. Nancy died on 07 Apr 1915 in Oxford, Adams, Pennsylvania and was buried in King Ferry, Cayuga, New York where they were farmers and members of the King Ferry Presbyterian Church which was first organized in Milton, then moved to Lansing, Tompkins county, then to Genoa, Cayuga county. Ezbon died on 16 Sep 1932 in King Ferry, Cayuga Co., New York.

  1. Ada Grace Bower - born on 08 Jul 1871 in Churchville, Monroe, NY. She graduated from the Cortland New York Normal School - Class of 1892; no record of children, but married Levi M. Thomas on 08 Oct 1919. Levi was born on 22 Sep 1863 in LaFayette, Onondaga, NY and died on 08 Jul 1947 in DeLand, Florida.

  2. John Isaac Bower - born on 20 Jun 1873 in Tully, Onondaga, New York. John married Irene Bush on 19 Jun 1895, she having been born on 13 Aug 1874 in Branchport, Yates, New York.

  3. Blanch J. Bower - born on 11 Jul 1875 in King Ferry, Cayuga, NY. She died on 15 Feb 1891 in King Ferry, Cayuga, NY and was buried in King Ferry, Cayuga, NY.

  4. Ray Blakely Bower - was born on 02 Dec 1881 in King Ferry, Cayuga, NY and was a farmer on US 20 east of Skaneateles, NY. He married Rose Grant on 12 Dec 1914. Rose was born on 08 Oct 1881 in Stamford, Delaware, NY and died on 25 Sep 1942 in Skaneateles, Onondaga, NY. They were both buried in King Ferry, Cayuga, New York.

 
 

Helen Jerusha Blakely , daughter of John D. Blakely and Sarah (Peters), was born on 02 Sep 1849 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. She married George Rowland on 16 Feb 1870 in Tully, Onondaga, NY and lived at Tully and Kortright.

George was born on 10 Dec 1833 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. He died on 14 Apr 1919 in Five Corners, Cayuga, NY and was buried in Five Corners, Cayuga, NY. Helen died on 16 Jun 1934 in Five Corners, Cayuga, New York and was buried there.
