Almost all Brenenstuhl´s (of greatly varying spellings) descend from Johann Michael who emigrated from Weil im Schoenbuch in about 1727. The subject of this brief sketch, is SETH BRENENSTAHL, grandson of Mikel who came to America just before the Revolutionary War and settled at White Plains, New York and served in the Continental Army during the War of Independence.

Mikel's son, Abram was born about 1785 in Troy, New York and married Hannah (Fink) and were the parents of Seth who was born 12 Feb 1812 in New York. He married Lucy V. (Hobart) in Pompey, New York in about 1835 and afterwards, removed to Syracuse, New York.

In the Spring of 1843, Seth, his pregnant wife Lucy and their small son George, moved to Dundee, Monroe county, Michigan where they were listed in the 1850 census with children: George, Horace, James and Minerva. They were then enumerated in the 1860 cenus listed as Seth "Barnstall" houshold #1186 in the Township of Raisinville, City of Monroe.

  3. JAMES BRENENSTUHL - born 1845 in Dundee, Michigan.
  4. MINERVA BRENINGSTALL - born 1848 in Dundee, Michigan; married Edgar BRENINGSTALL.
 
 
HORACE J. BRENINGSTALL 1843 - 1925

Horace, son of Seth and Lucy (Hobart), was born July 18, 1843 in Dundee, Monroe County, Michigan. Enlisted at Monroe in Co. A, 4th regiment, Michigan Inft. Vol. on May 20, 1861, was discharged at Detroit on June 30, 1864 and then re-enlisted on 20 March 1865 in Co. S, 5th Regiment, US Inft. Vol. and was finally discharged on 20 March 1866, at New York. He participated in the Battles of New Bridge, Hanover Court House, Mechanicsville, Gaines Mill, Savages's Station, Antulaus, White Oak Swamp, Geaniesville, 2nd Bull Run, Malvern Hill, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness Spotsylvania and others.

After the war, Horace was a broom-handle manufacturer, and on 12 July 1868, he married Henrietta Elizabeth Main in Petersburg, Michigan - she the daughter of Thomas Main and Henrietta (Williams) who was born in Christian Co., IL in 1850 and died in Petersburg on the 14th of February of 1912.

After Elizabeth passed away, he married Harriet (Allshouse) in Petersburg in 1914. She was born in Defiance, Ohio on 18 October 1850 and was the daughter of Daniel and Charity M. (Tinker) who came to Monroe county in 1861. According to his obituary, the drums taps sounded in honor of the dead soliders on Decoration Day, May 30, 1925, as his happy spirit took its flight to be with God. 

He was enumerated in the 1850 census for Dundee in his father's household; in the 1860 census in Raisinville living with his parents; and in 1870 listed in the census records with his wife and son Reuben in Summerfield Twp., Petersburg address.

  1. REUBEN GRANT BRENINGSTALL - born about 13 March 1869 in Petersburg and married Bertha (Mc Dowell) who was born 25 Mar 1876 in Detroit. Reuben died in January of 1926 in Petersburg, Michigan.
  2. SUSAN AMELIA BRENINGSTALL - born 18 Nov 1873 in Petersburg, MI. She married James Houseman who was born in Staten Island, NY on 15 Mar 1868 and was the son of John and Johanna (Stryker). Susie died on 21 July 1907 in Petersburg, and James married Margaret "Madge" Mead in 1909.
  3. PHILA "ADELAIDE" BRENINGSTALL - born 4 March 1880 in Petersburg, Michigan. She married Edison E. VALRANCE in Petersburg, he born 20 Nov 1874 in Monroe, son of John and Sarah Elizabeth (Knight). 
  4. LUCILLE MINERVA BRENINGSTALL - 31 May 1887 in Petersburg; she married H. C. GOVE
  5. GERTRUDE MAIN BRENINGSTALL - born 11 Dec 1890 in Petersburg, MI; she married George PETERS, born 16 Mar 1880 in Petersburg, son of Richard and Frances Amelia (Trombley), early settlers of Petersburg, of which the town was named. Gertrude passed away on 27 Oct 1975 in Alhambra, California. Her husband George passed away there on 24 Feb 1854.
 
 
JAMES BRENENSTUHL 1845 - 1872

Son of Seth and Lucy (Hobart), he was born about 1845 in Dundee, Monroe County, Michigan and married Frances (Woolcott) in July of 1867. James died from an injury received in the war at the battle before Petersburg, VA.

REUBEN GRANT BRENINGSTALL 1869-1926

Son of Horace and Henrietta E. (Main), Reuben was born on 13 Mar 1869 in Petersburg. He owned a drug store in Detroit which he operated for thirty years. His obituary from the Petersburg Sun is dated 29 Jan 1926. He was married to Bertha Mc Dowell who was born in Detroit on 25th of March 1876. Her obituary on file, is an undated newsclipping.

SUSAN AMELIA BRENINGSTALL 1873 - 1907

Born on the 18th of November 1873 in Petersburg, Michigan, Susan was the daughter of Horace and Henrietta E. (Main). She married James S. HOUSMAN on November 14, 1892 in Petersburg, he the son of John and Johanna (Stryker) who was born 15 March 1868 in Castleton Corner, Staten Island, NY and moved with his parents to Michigan in 1871, locating at Morenci. According to her obituary, Susan died 21 July 1907 in Petersburg and James died there on the 1st of March 1910.

  2. BINA LEOLA HOUSMAN - born 03 Sep 1894 in Petersburg; she married Harry Washington Jackson in Petersburg in 1914. She passed away in April 1976, in Miami, Florida. She was the mother of Howard, Carol, Donald and Betty Lou Jackson.
  3. JAMES DEAL HOUSMAN - born 28 April 1896 in Petersburg, He married Leda E. Schmid, the daughter of Carl and Eva (Keinath), she being born in Deerfield, Lenawee Co, MI on 26 Oct 1896. James passed away on the 3rd of April 1982 in Petersburg, and was laid to rest at the Pleasant View Cemetery. His wife Leda preceded him in death, passing on the 17th of April 1974 and was also laid to rest at the Pleasantview Cemetery.
  4. IDELLA HOUSMAN - born on 25 Dec 1900; wife of George Holmer, she passed away in 1990; parents of George Jr., and Phyllis Holmer.
 
 
BINA LEOLA HOUSMAN born 03 Sep 1894 in Petersburg, she was the daughter of Susan (Breningstall) and James Housman. Married to Harry Washington Jackson, an accountant, on 28 Jan 1914 in Petersburg, he the son of Scott and Ella (Bordine), Bina passed away in April of 1976 in Miami, Florida.

JAMES DEAL HOUSMAN 1896 - 1982

Born on April 28th of 1896 in Petersburg, Monroe County, Michigan, and died April 03, 1982 in Petersburg, Monroe County, Michigan. He was a lifetime resident of Petersburg and married Leda E. Schmid in Toledo, daughter of Carl and Eva (Keinath) who was a school teacher. He passed away on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1982, and wife Leda, who was she was a former school teacher and member of the Petersburg United Methodist Church and the Women´s Civic League passed on 14 April 1974 - they were laid to rest at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Petersburg.
