| Two known Smith
families are relative to the Peters family who
removed from Half Moon, Saratoga County, New York
and settled in Monroe Co., Michigan. The
following Smith family descends from Thomas Smith
who was born on 08 Feb 1735. He married Mary,
whose last name is not known and they attended
the Grooms Methodist Church which was also known
as the Old Clifton Park Church. Records state
that Thomas weighed over 400 pounds so that a
special seat had been built for him, and when he
died - a special casket. Since it was impossible
to bring it through the church doors, it was left
outside while the funeral service took place
within the church. It should also be noted that
Thomas' gravestone actually says, "Mr. Smith
at his death his wait was 425." He died at the age of
seventy-three on 03 Feb 1808 in Clifton Park and
was buried in the Grooms Methodist
Church Cemetery. His will which was probated on 11
April of that year mentioned his wife Mary, sons
Samuel & Thomas Smith Jr., and daughters Mary
Dunning and Catherine Fuller as well as
grandchildren: Jane, Thomas and Stephen Ladoe,
children of his daughter Sarah; Thomas,
Catherine, Smith, James, Samuel and Daniel
Stillwell, children of his daughter Neffe and her
deceased husband Thomas Stillwell; Solomon,
Polly, Sarah, Catherine, Walter, Jerusha and
Betsy Taylor, children of his deceased daughter
Jerusha and her husband Solomon. Executors listed
were Samuel Smith and Thomas Smith, Jr.

| SAMUEL SMITH, believed to be the son of
Thomas, married Elizabeth "Betsy"
Peters, the daughter of Richard Peters and
Jerusha (Sutton). Notes from "Soldiers of
the Revolution Buried in Indiana" state that
Samuel Smith of Jennings County was born on 24
Oct 1760 in Fishkill, New York. In his
Declaration for a Pension from the State of
Indiana, Jennings County, Samuel appeared in open
court and stated that he entered the service of
the United States in the month of September in
1776 as a volunteer. He served "four
tours" the first and fourth as a volunteer
and the 2nd and 3rd he had been drafted but could
not recollect the names of any of the regular
officers except for General Montgomery and had
never been given any other discharge other than
verbal. Unable to provide documents as to his
rank, he waived his claim as a Sergeant in hopes
that the Department would simply be able to
provide him with the compensation of a private,
his agent Stephen S. Harding, also noting that
Samuel had for many years been deprived of his
sight and that he therefore was laboring under
many disadvantages. Samuel had also stated in this
Declaration that he would be seventy-three years
on the 24th of October next, but that there was
no record of his birth except that which had been
recorded in the family Bible which was with his
son in the state of New York. In all, Samuel
served one year and six months and was awarded a
pension at the rate of $60 dollars per annum to
commence on the 4th day of March 1831. Although
his date of death is not known, he was listed in
the Heads of Families as of June 1, 1840 as aged
80; nd also listed on the Jennings Co.
Revolutionary War Pensioners Census of 1841. He
was buried in Brewersville, Indiana.
No other records
have been searched at this time but it seems
possible, though not yet proven, that the two
Smith households located in the 1850 census residing in Sand
Creek Twp., Jennings Co., Indiana are of relation
this Samuel Smith. Located and born in New York
in about 1818 was Samuel Smith, presumed to be
his son, who married Mary J. Byram in that county
on 20 Aug 1846 and had one daughter by 1850. Two
Byram or Byrom families are included in the 1850
extracts, these being the households of Samuel
and Nancy Byram as well as James and Eliza Byram.
Also residing in
Sand Creek Township was James P. Smith who was
born in New York in about 1794 or 1795. He
appears to be James Peters Smith who married
Eliza A. Beachum in Dearborn Co., Indiana on 27
Aug 1826. The following were listed in this
household: Nelson age 23, Richard age 17,
Elizabeth age 15, Oliver age 13, Thomas age 11,
James age 9, Henry C. age 7, Dewitt C.N. age 3
and five month-old George M. Smith.
Thomas Smith born
in Indiana in about 1823 who married Elizabeth
Stott on 01 Aug 1844 was also living in Sand
Creek Township. Their household included Jackson
age 5, and Sarah Smith age 3 as well as Sarah
Stott age 21, and Daniel Stott age 13 who are
most likely the younger siblings of Elizabeth.
In 1860 the family of Samuel and
Mary J. Smith were still in Jennings Co., Indiana
and their family included Esther Ann age 12,
Samuel age 10, Sarah E. age 4, and Thomas age
one. Thomas Smith, husband of Elizabeth (Stott)
appears to have died as she is listed as head of
household with Allen J. age 14, Sarah A. age 12,
William age 8, Francis M. age 5 and young John F.
Smith age two.

| MARY
"MARIA" SMITH, daughter of Thomas, was
born 04 Feb 1764 and died 17 Feb 1844 in
Broadalbin, Fulton Co., New York. She married
Abel Dunning in Jan 1784 in Pittstown, Rensselaer
Co., New York as stated by her sister Catharine
in the following record: State of New York | Fulton County
I Catharine Fuller of the Town of Galway in the
County of Saratoga being duly sworn depose &
say that I am aged seventy two years, that I am
the sister of Maria Dunning the widow of Abel
Dunning deceased, a Pensioner of the United
States.
I further state
that according to the best of my recollection and
belief the said Abel Dunning was married to Maria
Smith (now Maria Dunning the widow of said Abel
Dunning) in the year 1784. I was not present at
the marriage, but was at my father's house, Mr.
Thomas Smith, in Pittstown, Rensselaer County, a
short time before the marriage but was away about
two weeks before they were married. I heard of
the marriage a short time after it took place
& saw them a few months after they were
married and have known them ever since and they
have always lived together as man and wife.
I think they were
married in 1784, as I was about thirteen or
fourteen years of age at the time and have known
them to have lived together from that time up to
the period of the death of Abel Dunning
aforesaid. I recollect the time of the marriage
from another circumstance, that about a month
after my sister was married, my Father moved to
Saratoga County which was about fifty-eight years
ago.
Sworn to &
Subscribed this 8th day of May 1843
(signed) Catharine Fuller ------X---- her mark
I certify that the above named deponent is
personally known to me & that she is a
credible witness and owing to infirmity cannot
write (signed) Elisha Alward.
According to the
cemetery records, Abel and Maria were laid to
rest at Broadalbin Village Cemetery in Fulton
Co., New York. Abel was born in 1763 and died at
the age of 78 years 1 month and 4 days on 16 Aug
1841.
