Livingstone Relations.  Moffat 1: Mary's Ancestry

Mary Moffat was the wife of David Livingstone. Her paternal ancestors came from the Midlothian and East Lothian counties of Scotland. Mary's father, Robert Moffat, was a missionary to the Bechuana people at Kuruman.

Robert Moffat became a revenue official in Portsoy, Banffshire, in 1797. In 1799, he was transferred to Bo'ness, at which time the family moved to Carronshore. In 1811, he was transferred to Inverkeithing, where he retired after 50 years of service in 1847.

Robert Moffat joined the London Missionary Society and left for South Africa in 1816. He served there until 1870, with only one trip home from 1839-1843. He established the mission station at Kuruman among the Bechuana, and translated the Bible into their language.
