16.  James5 ROSEBERRY (581) (William, #32); born 1799 in NC; married ? (4332) (see #17) 1819; married Mary ? (582) circa 1845; died circa 1865.

     In 1850 and 1860 he lived in Rockingham Co., NC.

     Children of James5 Roseberry (581) and (--?--) ? (4332) (see #17) both born in NC were as follows:

                      i.    Calvin4 (4333); born 1818; married Mary ? (4422) circa 1844 in Rockingham Co., NC; died after 1880.

     Calvin lived in 1850 in Rockingham Co., NC. He was listed as a farmer in 1850 and 1880. He was a Civil War veteran beginning military service in the 4th VA Reserves, Co. F on May 16, 1864 in Hillsville, Carroll Co., VA.

20.  Russell5 KING (603) (William, #40); born 1807 in Montgomery County, VA; married Phoebe ? (604) (see #21) before 1837.

     He was a laborer in 1850 and lived in Pulaski Co., VA.

     Children of Russell5 King (603) and Phoebe ? (604) (see #21) were as follows:

                      i.    Wilson4 (605); born 1837 in Pulaski Co., VA.

                      ii.    Elizabeth (606); born 1838.

                     iii.    Sarah Katherine (607); born July 13, 1839 in Newbern, Pulaski Co., VA; married William Jarman (612) May 8, 1856 in Dobson, Surry Co., NC; died July 12, 1918 in Athens, Fayette Co., KY, at age 78, and was buried in the Athens Baptist Church Cemetery.

                     iv.    Russell Jr. (608); born 1840 in Pulaski Co., VA; died March 25, 1865 in Richmond, VA and was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond, VA.

     Russell was a laborer in 1860 in Pulaski Co., VA. He began military service on April 14, 1862.  A Civil War veteran, Russell enlisted in the 50th VA INF as a Private in Co. I.  He was Present on the muster roll for May 5, 1864 until May 19, 1864  making him one of only six men left in Co. I following the Wilderness-Spotsylvania C. H. battles.  Russell was captured at Snicker's Gap on July 18, 1864 and sent as a prisoner of war to Washington D. C. where he stayed from Aug. 8, 1864 until Aug. 12, 1864.  Then he was a prisoner of war at Elmira, NY from Aug. 12, 1864 until Dec. 16, 1864 when he stated his desire to take the Oath of Allegiance, saying he "volunteered...in 1862 to avoid being conscripted.  Desires to go to Charleston, W. Va. where his relatives reside."  Russell was paroled from Elmira for exchange on Mar. 14, 1865 and received for exchange on Boulware's Wharf on the James River on Mar. 21, 1865.  He was then hospitalized in Richmond until Mar. 25, 1865 when he died of chronic diarrhea.  Russell King was buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, VA.

     Russell King was a laborer, age 21, in Pulaski Co., VA on the 1860 Census.

                     v.    Chapman (609); born 1843 in VA; died April 18, 1865 in Elmira, NY; buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, grave #1347, Elmira, NY.

     Chapman lived in 1860 in Pulaski Co., VA. He began military service on April 2, 1862.  A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in the 50th VA (Later in 8th VA CAV & 5th VA INF) as a Private in Co. I. On April 2, 1862.  Chapman King was captured at Lewisburg on May 23, 1862 and was in Wheeling, WV by May 30, 1862.  By June 30, 1862, he was sent to Camp Chase, OH. where he remained until Aug. 25, 1862.  He was received for exchange aboard John H. Done near Vicksburg, MS on Sep. 11, 1862 and was declared exchanged on Nov. 10, 1862.

     Chapman was captured in the Wilderness on May 6, 1864 and was a prisoner of war at Point Lookout from May 17, 1864 until Aug. 10, 1864 when he was sent to Elmira, NY on Aug. 14, 1864.  On Dec. 16, 1864, he stated his desire to take the Oath of Allegiance saying he "volunteered April 2, 1862.  Desires to go to Charleston, WV where he has relatives residing."  He died of chronic diarrhea on Apr. 18, 1865 and was buried in grave #1347 in Woodlawn Cemetery.  His effects was $60 CSA currency.      

     A resident of Pulaski Co. VA., Chapman King was 5'11 with hazel eyes and dark hair but no whiskers. Age 20 or 21.

Parents of Mary Jane Rankin

22.  James5 RANKIN (614); born 1824 in Pulaski Co., VA; married Amanda M. Godby (615) (see #23), daughter of Francis Marion Godby (902) and Rhoda Whitt (906), February 12, 1850 in Pulaski Co., VA; married Hannah (?) (616) circa 1855; died after 1870.

     He was a laborer in 1850 and lived in the 48th District, Pulaski Co., VA. He began military service on September 10, 1863 in Pulaski Co., VA.  A Civil War Veteran, James enlisted in the 4th VA INF, Co. C-"The Pulaski Guards."

     Children of James5 Rankin (614) and Amanda M. Godby (615) (see #23) were:

23.  Amanda M.5 GODBY (615) (Francis, #46); born 1829 in Pulaski Co., VA; married James Rankin (614) (see #22) February 12, 1850 in Pulaski Co., VA; died circa 1853 in Pulaski Co., VA.
