Elizabeth Gunn Sutton Will of 1909

 

I, Elizabeth J. Sutton, of the County of Pulaski, and State of Virginia, considering the uncertainty of life, do make this my will and testament, hereby revoking any former will by me at any time made.

FIRST: I devise that my body be decently burried in a manner corresponding to my estate and situation in life, but with as little expense as may be consistently therewith.

SECOND: I direct that all my just debts (if any) and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my death as conveniently may be.

THIRD:  I give and devise to my son, William K. Sutton, one poplar bedstead, the feather bed and bedding used with same, one falling-leaf table; one safe and press, one large split-bottom rocking chair; and all my farming tools, implements and machinery used in farming.

FOURTH:  I give and devise to my daughter, Lula O., wife of Walter R. Stringer, one oak bedstead, the feather bed and bedding used with same; and one small spinning wheel.

FIFTH:  I give and devise to my grand-daughter, Elizabeth Sutton, one poplar bedstead; the feather bed and bedding used with same; one sewing machine; one mahogheny bureau; one spring couch; one cane-bottom rocking chair; and my eight-day clock.

SIXTH:  I give and devise to my grand-son, J. W. Sutton, the sum of FIFTY ($50.00) DOLLARS in money.

SEVENTH:  As I have heretofore given and contributed of my estate towards the education of my son, Samuel G. Sutton and my daughter, Mary E., wife of C. W. Miller, all that I desire to give each of them; I give and devise all the residue of my property of whatsoever kind or nature, after the payment of any just debts should there be such, owing by me; and the payment of funeral expenses, to my son, William K. Sutton, and my daughter, Lula O., wife of W. R. Stanger, to be divided equally between them.

EIGHTH:  I hereby constitute and name D. S. Pollock executor of this my last will.

 

             WITNESS my hand this 16th day of April, in the year A. D. 1909.

            The foregoing will was this day produced in said office, and proved according to law, and ordered to be recorded.

Transcriber's note: Lula Sutton's husband is referred to as Walter Stringer twice, the second time ANG was handwritten in over the RING making STANGER which is the name on the wedding record.
