The Bane Family History

ORIGINS

The surname Banes is thought to be of Scottish origin, derived from personal or physical characteristics. The name can be traced to the Gaelic work "ban" which translates to "white."

Banes is recorded in Scottish documents as early as the 14th century; the suffix “s” may denote patronymy.

The earliest record of the surname Banes in the United States is of Martha Banes, age twenty, who in July 1635, sailed from Liverpool to New England.

The 1790 United States Census lists only 310 family members with this surname for the entire country. Heads of families were 72 in number and distributed per state as follows: Massachusetts (2); New York (9); Pennsylvania (17); Maryland (14); Virginia (16); North Carolina (11); and South Carolina (3). Spelling variations of the name were Bain, Baen, Baens, Bagn, Baign, Baine, Baines, Bane, Banes, Bayan, Bayhan, Bayne and Baynes. The average size of each family was reported as 5.3 members.
