Generation Four

5.  Calvin4 ROSEBERRY (James3, William2, Jesse1) born 1818 in NC;[1] married Mary ? circa 1844 in Rockingham Co., NC;[2] died after 1880.[3]  Evidence that Calvin Roseberry is James Roseberry's son and thus Samuel Roseberry's brother is not definitive. Rockingham Co., NC is where James, Calvin and Samuel Roseberry lived before moving to Carroll Co., VA.

     An annotated 1850 Carroll County, VA Census says of Samuel that "They had only recently come here from North Carolina; most of the present family descends from other Roseberrys who seem to be kinsmen of his who followed him here."  The 1860 Carroll County, VA Census lists Calvin, age 42, Samuel, age 45 and James, age 61. James appears to be the father of Samuel and Calvin.

     In the 1881 Pulaski Co., VA Register of Deaths, Samuel Roseberry's parents are listed as "Roseberry, James & _____. The source for this is Samuel's son, Samuel A. Roseberry, Jr.

     The death record or perhaps marriage record of Calvin Roseberry needs to be located to see if this relationship can be established more firmly;

      He lived in 1850 in Rockingham Co., NC.[4] On the1850 and 1880 censuses he could not read or write.[5],[6] He was a farmer between 1850 and 1880.[7],[8],[9],[10] He lived between 1860 and 1880 in Carroll Co., VA.[11],[12],[13]

     He began military service on May 16, 1864 in Hillsville, Carroll Co., VA.  A Civil War veteran Calvin enlisted in the 4th VA Reserves, Co. F as a private.[14]

     Mary ? was born circa 1820.

     Children of Calvin4 Roseberry and Mary ? were as follows:

+          22.          i.     George W.5 Roseberry, born February, 1844 in TN; married Electra Flora (--?--).

            23.          ii.     Mary Elizabeth Roseberry; born 1848 in NC.[15]

     She lived between 1910 and 1920 in Carroll Co., VA; "Bettie" Roseberry, 62, is listed as living with her brother, George W. Roseberry in 1910 and "Mary E." listed as living with her brother in 1920.[16],[17]

            24.        iii.     Martha Roseberry; born 1854 in NC;[18] died before 1870 probably in Carroll Co., VA.[19]

            25.         iv.     Isaac Roseberry; born 1858 in VA.[20]

7.  Samuel4 ROSEBERRY (James3, William2, Jesse1) born 1820 in NC;[21] married Agnes Jane Manly November 20, 1841 in Rockingham, NC; died December 12, 1881 in Pulaski, VA; "tooth?ache," possibly "foots?ache."[22]  Evidence that Samuel Roseberry is James Roseberry's son is first found in Rockingham Co., NC, Will Abstracts 1785-1865 which has a will listing "Samuel Rokbury, son of James Roseberry."  Rockingham Co., NC is where Samuel Roseberry lived before moving to Carroll Co., VA.

     The second document is an annotated 1850 Carroll County, VA Census which says of Samuel that "They had only recently come here from North Carolina; most of the present family descends from other Roseberrys who seem to be kinsmen of his who followed him here."  The 1860 Carroll County, VA Census lists Samuel, age 45; James, age 61; and Calvin, age 42.  James appears to be the father of Samuel and Calvin.

     Then in the 1881 Pulaski Co. Register of Deaths, Samuel Roseberry's parents are listed as "Roseberry, James & ---------.  The source for this is Samuel's son, Samuel A. Roseberry, Jr.

     He lived in 1841 in Rockingham Co., NC.[23] He was a farmer in 1850 in Carroll Co., VA.[24] Land records show he purchased 45 acres on Chestnut Creek and 23 1/2 acres on the waters of Chestnut Creek on October 1, 1855 in Carroll Co., VA.[25]

     He began military service on May 16, 1864 in Hillsville, Carroll, VA.  A Civil War veteran, Samuel enlisted in the 4th VA Reserves, Co.      Agnes Jane MANLY; born circa 1819 in NC.[27] She died after 1870.[28]  The marriage records of Rockingham Co., NC (Sec. 111, ch. 81) show the wedding of "Roseberry, Saml. " and "Manly, Agnes" on Nov. 20, 1841.
