3.  Byrdine3 GUNN (John2, John1); born August 5, 1834 in Pulaski, VA;[1] married Emma Madora Lowman February 28, 1877 in Pulaski, VA;[2] died November 2, 1905 in Pulaski, VA, at age 71, and  buried in the Newbern Community Cemetery in Pulaski Co., VA.[3]

     A Civil War veteran, Byrdine began military service on May 27, 1861 in Lynchburg, VA when he  enlisted in the 24th VA INF, Co. E  at Lynchburg, VA. [4] 

     Commissioned as 2nd Lt. on May 1, 1861.

     Enlisted Co. E on May 27, 1861 at Lynchburg, VA as a 3rd Lt.

     Elected 1st Lt. on May 10, 1862

     Birdine was wounded at Gettysburg (during Pickett's Charge). He was admitted to the Richmond Hospital on Sep. 11, 1863 with a gunshot wound to the groin and was later furloughed on Sep. 17, 1863. Birdine was absent on wounded furlough until the Spring of 1864.

     He was wounded again at Drewry's Bluff, probably on May 16, 1864 and admitted to the Chimborazo Hospital on May 17, 1864 with a gunshot wound to the buttock. He was promoted to captain on May 29, 1864 and furloughed on June 7, 1864 for 30 days.

     Birdine was captured at Hatcher's Run on April 2, 1865 during the fighting that finally led to the fall of Richmond. He was released from Johnson's Island on June 18, 1865.

     His description as given by his prisoner of war records state Birdine was 5'11 " with a dark complexion, dark hair and blue eyes. He was a resident of Dublin, VA. [5]

     He was a farmer in 1877 in Pulaski Co., VA.[6]

 

     Emma Madora LOWMAN was born on May 3, 1850 in Pulaski, VA.[7] She died on October 20, 1931 in Pulaski, VA, at age 81, and was buried in Newbern Community Cemetery, Pulaski, VA.[8]

     Children of Byrdine3 Gunn and Emma Madora Lowman were as follows:

              9.          i.     Cloe Effie4;[9] born January 5, 1878 in Pulaski Co., VA;[10] died August 23, 1949 in Pulaski, VA, at age 71 and buried in Newbern Community Cemetery, Pulaski, VA.[11]

            10.          ii.     Cora Lee; born November 15, 1879 in Pulaski Co., VA;[12] died October 4, 1964 in Pulaski, VA, at age 84, and buried in Newbern Community Cemetery, Pulaski, VA.[13]

            11.        iii.     Robert C.; born September 9, 1881 in Pulaski Co., VA;[14] married Nora Alice Byrd circa 1905; died 1952 in Pulaski, VA and buried in New Dublin Presbyterian Church, Pulaski, VA.[15]

            12.         iv.     Ralph B.; born February 27, 1883 in prob. Pulaski, VA.[16]

            13.         v.     Mary; born November 15, 1886 in Pulaski Co., VA.[17]

            14.         vi.     Della; born July 16, 1892 in Pulaski Co., VA.[18]

 

 

7.  Elizabeth J.3 GUNN (John2, John1); born January 28, 1842;[19] married John C. Sutton, son of John C. Sutton and Elizabeth C. Glasgow, September 26, 1860 in Pulaski Co., VA;[20] died June 5, 1911 at age 69.

 

     John C. SUTTON was born on July 20, 1838 in Newbern, Pulaski Co., VA.[21],[22] He lived in 1860 in Pulaski Co., VA.[23],[24] He was a farmer between 1860 and 1870 in Pulaski Co., VA.[25],[26],[27] He lived between 1861 and 1867 in Pulaski Co., VA.[28]  He died on April 27, 1893 in Pulaski Co., VA, at age 54 and was buried in the Newbern Community Cemetery, Pulaski Co., VA. [29]
