3.  Nathaniel3 VAUGHAN (Jesse2, William1); born October 6, 1792 in Grayson Co., VA; died July 13, 1883 in Carroll Co., VA, at age 90; cause "old age." Age at death given as 93 years, 9 months, 7 days.[1]

     Land records show, “William & Rachel Stone of Grayson to: $100, Nathaniel Vaughn of same, 50 acres on Chestnut Creek, adj. James Cole” on September 15, 1812 in Grayson Co., VA.[2] Another land record lists, “Nathaniel Vaughan.  One farm on the flower gap road joining the land of George Ailes worth containing fifty acres having thereon one dwelling house of logs, one stable &c.  Valued at $50” in 1815 in Grayson Co., VA.[3] He was a farmer on July 13, 1883 in Carroll Co., VA.[4]

 

     Children of Nathaniel3 Vaughan include:

              5.          i.     William4 Vaughan; born circa 1822; died July 13, 1883 in Carroll Co., VA; informant on father's death record.[5]

 

4.  John3 VAUGHAN (Jesse2, William1); born 1793 in Grayson Co., VA;[6] married Ruth Hanks, daughter of Joshua Hanks and Ruth Bryant, June 5, 1815 in Grayson Co., VA;[7] died April 15, 1876 in Carroll County, VA; buried in Vaughan Cemetery in Carroll Co., VA at age of 84.  Cause of death listed as "gravel."[8],[9]

     He began military service in 1812.  He was a veteran of the War of 1812 serving in the 4th Regiment of Capt. Heuls Company.[10] He was a farmer between 1850 and 1876 in Carroll Co., VA.[11],[12] He was a farmer with $1200 in real estate and $2020 in personal property in 1860 in Cranberry Plains, Carroll Co., VA.[13] He left a will on June 12, 1874 in Carroll Co., VA.

John Vaughan's Last Will & Testament.

     I John Vaughan of Carroll County Virginia, do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say.

     1st.  I give to my beloved wife Ruth Vaughan all my lands in Carroll County Virginia during the term of her natural life.

     2nd.  After the death of my wife I give to my Grand daughter Nancy E. Burnop my tract of land known as the Stone tract, lying on Bobbitts Creek in Carroll County Virginia, and bounded as follows to wit.  Beginning at a locust sapling in a field by a cross fence and running with said fence N85 E88 poles crossing a branch to a chestnut and chestnut oak sapling in my old line, thence with said line N25 E99 poles to a Spanish oak near the head of a hallow, thence N52 W62 poles to three red oaks on a ridge, thence S52 W76 poles to a white oak on a ridge, thence N74 W28 poles to 2 Spanish oaks, thence leaving my old line S4 E102 poles crossing a branch to the beginning.  The above described tract of land, after the death of my wife I give to my above named Grand daughter Nancy E. Burnop and her heirs forever.  The mineral in the aboved described tract of land excepted.

     3rd.  After the death of my wife I give to my two Grand daughters, Ally M. Vaughan and Rachel A. Vaughan the tract of land on which I now live, (excepting the mineral) to be equally divided between them and their heirs forever.

     4th I give to my son Elisha B. Vaughan my interest in the Copper property known as the Francis Lineberry property, which interest was purchased of R. M. and W. W. Lillands, for which interest I now hold their little bond which is of record in the Clerk's Office of Carroll County Court.  I also give to my son Elisha B. Vaughan my rifle gun.

     5th, I give to my beloved wife Ruth Vaughan all my other personal property of every kind and description to dispose of it at her pleasure by will or otherwise.

     6th, I give all the minerals in the two above described tracts of land to my three Grand daughters Ally M. Vaughan, Rachel A. Vaughan and Nancy E. Burnop and their heirs forever,  Lastly I do herby Constitute and appoint my wife Ruth Vaughan executrix and my son Elisha B. Vaughan executor of this my last will and testament.  I desire that my executrix and executor shall not be required to give any bond and I also desire that my property shall not be appraised.

     In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 12th day of June 1874.

Virginia: In Carroll County Court May 15, 1876.

A writing purporting to be the last will and testament of John Vaughan deceased was this day produced in Court and proved by the oaths of John L. Minter & R. M. Vaughan two of the subscribing witnesses thereto, and was ordered to be recorded.  And thereupon Elisha B. Vaughan one of the executors therein named, appeared in Court, and qualified as Such executor, the said will directing that no bond be required of the executors.               A Copy

     Ruth HANKS was born on May 24, 1797.[15] She died on February 15, 1879 in Carroll County, VA, at age 81.[16]  She left a will on June 2, 1876 in Carroll Co., VA.

Ruth Vaughan's last Will & Testament.

     I, Ruth Vaughan of the County of Carroll and state of Virginia, do hereby make my last will and testatment in manner and form following, that is to say.

     I give to my two grand children Rufus M. Vaughan and Ollie M. Vaughan, his wife, all my property of every kind and description.  And I do hereby constitute and appoint my son Elisha B. Vaughan Executor of this my last will and testament.  I desire that my Executor shall not be required to give any bond and also desire that my property shall not be appraised.  In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 2nd day of June, 1876.

     This writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Ruth Vaughan, deceased, was this day produced in Court and the execution thereof proved by the oaths of A. J. Philippi and Ellis F. Vaughan two of the subscribing witnesses and was ordered  to be recorded.  And ----  on motion of Elisha B. Vaughan, the Executor named in said will, who made oath in due form, certificate is granted him for obtaining probate of said will in due form.
