his father-in-law, Thos. Craft. Later he purchased two young negros, Daniel 16

died leaving only nominal 10 shillings to some of his children but a hundred
pounds to the children of his deceased brother Argyle. His wife is not named in

“As
this was only a part of his estate it is obvious that Argyle was an affluent
man and his daughter Nancy, was well provided for. She could have brought quite
a dowry to Tom Lincoln.
Nancy
died before she was twenty and her brother-in-law Doke Prewett administered the
estate. At a sale of the effects her mother Frances bid in Nancy's half of the
property they had owned together; Nancy's sister Polly, bid in and bought half
of the pine table, bed and cow and calf; Doke purchased half of the eleven
hogs, and reported the sale at the Feb. term of Court 1804.
Frances
Hanks was made guardian for four of her minor children and made reports to the
Court up until 1812, when one son Green, became of age, leaving Willis a ward.
Fanny
(Frances) Hanks made her will, June 12, 1829 and left the "Landed
Estate" to be equally divided between Green- John D.- Argyle Hanks. These
men had no children and in 1865 both Argyle and John died and so disappeared
the white Hanks family of this area.
There
are now a few negro Hanks families there.
James Hanks, colored, lives on the farm where Argyle and John Hanks are
buried together under a huge oak tree.”[9]
