82.  William10 HANKS (Richard9, William8, William7, Thomas6, Thomas5, Thomas4, Thomas3, George2, John1) was born circa 1755 in Dinwiddie Co., VA[1]  and married Keziah Wright circa 1780.  William died in Rutherford Co., NC.[2]

     He was a shoemaker[3] and lived in Near Bostic, Rutherford Co., NC.[4]

     Keziah WRIGHT was born circa 1755.

     Children of William10 Hanks and Keziah Wright were as follows:

      135.        i.    William11 Hanks; born circa 1785.

      136.       ii.    Mary Hanks; born circa 1785.

      137.     iii.    Thomas Hanks; born circa 1785.

      138.      iv.    James Hanks; born circa 1785.

      139.       v.    John Hanks; born circa 1785.

      140.      vi.    Rachel Hanks; born circa 1785.

      141.    vii.    Noah Hanks; born January 1, 1790.

      142.    viii.    Nancy Hanks; born circa 1800.[5]

     “This is the Nancy Hanks b. circa 1800, who resided in the household of Abraham Enloe in Rutherford Co., N. C.

       For further interest about her refer to Barton., The Paternity of Abraham Lincoln, p 74, Chap. XI;   Baber, Nancy Hanks of ”Undistinguished Families-Second Families” Chap. V, 111.”[6]

 

 

 

85.  Joshua10 HANKS (Richard9, William8, William7, Thomas6, Thomas5, Thomas4, Thomas3, George2, John1) was born 1760 in Amelia Co., VA[7],[8] and married Ruth Bryant, daughter of John Bryant and Lydia Allen, August 16, 1784 in Surry Co., NC.[9],[10]  Joshua died in February 1854 in Carroll Co., VA and is buried in the Quaker Cemetery, Carroll Co., VA.[11],[12],[13]

     Joshua moved from Surry Co., NC to Piper's Gap, VA.[14]  A Revolutionary War Soldier, he began military service circa 1778.[15]

     He left a will on February 17, 1854 in Carroll Co., VA.

     Joshua Hanks Last will and Testament. 

I Joshua Hanks of Carroll County Va do make this and no other to be my Last will and Testatment revoking all former wills, or codicils by me in any wise make rectifying and confirming this and no other.  First I give unto my son William Hanks, one Dollar and no more for believing as I do that I have already givin to his two sons Franklin and Sylvanus as much as I had to give to my other legatees.  Secondly I give to my four Grandsons namely Martin, Creed, Friel & Orval, all my four hundred and 30 acre tract of land lying in the county of Carroll and state of Virginia that has not been already disposed of to be equally divided between them and their Heirs forever.  Thirdly I give to my daughters herein after named all the rest of my Estate both Real and personal of every description whatsoever, namely, Mary Cooley, Nancy Moore, Lydia Moore, Rhoda Moore, Patience Davis, Thursey Mallory, Ruth Vaughan, Susan Mooney, to them and their heirs forever to be Equally Divided.  And Lastly I do constitute and appoint my friend James D. Cooley my Executor of this my last will and Testament.  Signed Sealed and acknowledged in the presints of us

This Last will and Testatment of Joshua Hanks Dec'd was proven in open court by the oaths of James C. Davis & William Hanks subscribing witnesses thereto and was ordered to be Recorded.

     Ruth BRYANT was born in 1764.[17]  She died in 1840 and is buried in the Old Quaker Cemetery in Carroll Co., VA.[18]

      143.        i.    Patience11 Hanks; born 1784 in VA;[19] married William Davis circa 1815.

     Patience and William Davis had five children circa 1820.[20]

      144.       ii.    Mary Hanks; born circa 1785; married Peter Cooley May 29, 1806.[21]

+    145.     iii.    William Hanks, born 1786 in probably on Cole Creek, Carroll Co., VA; married (--?--); married Dicey Tucker; married Nancy Carrico; married Elizabeth Cain.

      146.      iv.    Zachariah Hanks; born circa 1790; married Susan Rector.

      147.       v.    Rhoda Hanks; born circa 1795; married Enoch Moore May 4, 1819.[22]

      148.      vi.    Nancy Hanks; born 1795 in VA;[23] married George Moore.

+    149.    vii.    Ruth Hanks, born May 24, 1797 in Grayson Co., VA; married John W. Vaughan.

+    150.    viii.    Thomas Hanks, born October 28, 1797; married Jennie (--?--).

      151.      ix.    Richard Hanks; born circa 1800;[24] married Tamer Bryant September 3, 1824.[25]

      152.       x.    Lydia Hanks; born circa 1800; married James Moore.

     After her marriage, Lydia moved to Georgia.[26]

      153.      xi.    David Hanks; born circa 1800; died in infancy.[27]

      154.    xii.    James Hanks; born circa 1800.

     He never married.[28]

      156.   xiv.    Susanna Hanks; born circa 1805; married John Mooney 1829.[29]

+    157.     xv.    Joshua Hanks Jr., born 1805 in VA; married Rosamond Carrico.

      158.   xvi.    Thursa Hanks; born 1805 in VA;[30] married Henry Mallory.

 

 

 

86.  Richard10 HANKS II (Richard9, William8, William7, Thomas6, Thomas5, Thomas4, Thomas3, George2, John1) was born 1762 in Amelia Co., VA[31] and married Phebe Hayes October 17, 1785 in Lincoln Co., NC.[32]  He married Levian Young March 1, 1821.  “Samuel Ewing signed the papers.  The Ewings were near neighbors; as were the Berrys.  Richard Berry m. Polly Ewing.  After Richard's death, his widow wrote, "Eve E" Hanks filed a claim, July 1853.”[33]  Richard died before July 22, 1853 in Lincoln Co., NC.[34]

     A Revolutionary War Soldier, he began military service in 1778 in Guilford Co., NC.  “Volunteered for Rev. War service at the age of  16, from Guilford Co.  N.C. Was sent to suppress Tories; was in the Battle of Guilford C.H., under Capt. Lopp. (Lopp was later a Col. in 1789 he sold land to Felix Hanks). In 1832 Richard applied for a pension and stated he had resided in Linc. Co. N.C. for 40 years.”[35] He lived between 1792 and 1832 in Lincoln Co., NC.[36]

     Phebe HAYES was born on November 8, 1768.[37]

     Children of Richard10 Hanks II and Phebe Hayes were as follows:

      159.        i.    John11 Hanks; born August 31, 1786.

      160.       ii.    Joshua Hanks; born May 1, 1789.

      161.     iii.    Martha Hanks; born September 21, 1791.

      162.      iv.    James Hanks; born March 8, 1794; died in infancy.[38]

      163.       v.    Thomas Hanks; born 1797.

      164.      vi.    Mary Hanks; born October 10, 1799.

      165.    vii.    David Hanks; born July 17, 1802.

      166.    viii.    Nancy Hanks; born July 25, 1805.

     “It was in the home of "Uncle Dickey" Hanks that Nancy Hanks, the orphan resided for a time.  The farm is now in the possession of the Stowe family.  They have erected a marker on the spot.  It reads:

          This stone marks the site                    

          of the log cabin home of

                 DICKEY HANKS

                    an uncle of

                  NANCY HANKS

                     mother of

           ABRAHAM LINCOLN

          Nancy spent much of her

          girlhood here with her uncle     

                     - - - - - - - -

    Erected in 1903 by descendents of    

                    C. T. STOWE.”[39]

      167.      ix.    Nathan Hanks; born February 6, 1811.

     Levian YOUNG was born circa 1765.

     There were no children of Richard10 Hanks II and Levian Young.

 

 

 

87.  Thomas10 HANKS (Richard9, William8, William7, Thomas6, Thomas5, Thomas4, Thomas3, George2, John1) was born circa 1763 probably in Amelia Co., VA[40] and married Lucretia Hargrave March 2, 1789 in Rowan Co., NC.[41]  Thomas died November 5, 1851 in "in the 88th year of his age."[42]

     A Revolutionary War Soldier, he began military service circa 1781. 

    “Thomas Hanks, probable son of Richard.  Hitchcock lists the Thomas Hanks., son of Richard Hanks Sr., as deceased Mar. 28, 1797, and gives no authority. This compiler has not seen such date. It seems more likely that this Thomas of Rowan Co., N. C. where Richard Hanks Sr., lived, and where other known sons of Richard Sr., resided, was also his son. Joshua Hanks, son of Richard Sr., had 5 brothers in the Rev. War, and it includes Thomas to make five.

    On a plaque at the east gate of Old Goshen cemetery are the names of twenty-two soldiers of the Revolutionary War interred therein and Thomas Hanks' name is one of them.”[43]

     Lucretia HARGRAVE was born in 1769.[44] She died on December 17, 1839.[45]  Her tomb inscription reads    "Sacred to the

                                 memory of

                               Crossie Hanks

                        wife of  Thomas Hanks

                       who died Dec“r 17 1839

              in the 70th year of her age" in 1839.”[46]

     Children of Thomas10 Hanks and Lucretia Hargrave were as follows:

      168.        i.    ?11 Hanks; born after March 2, 1789.[47]

      169.       ii.    Elizabeth Hanks; born April 29, 1791;[48] died February 16, 1875 at age 83.[49]

      170.     iii.    William Hanks; born 1798;[50] married Lucy Jane ? circa 1823;[51] died December 13, 1865.[52]

      171.      iv.    Ezekial Hanks; born circa 1805; married (--?--) circa 1825;[53] married Anna Maria Costner Hoffman May 12, 1831.[54]
