Thomas Godbey arrived in Virginia
from England in 1608 on the ship Delivrance. His wife, Joane, came over in 1621
possibly as part of a program to bring wives for the settlers. In 1622 they
survived the Powhatan Indians’ massacre of 350 settlers (app. 1/3 of the
Virginians) probably because they lived in Elizabeth City, where many of the
settlers were concentrated, rather than in one of the outlying farms. Thomas Godbey's son, also named Thomas, was
born in lower Norfolk in 1623. In 1624, Thomas and Joane Godbey are listed on
the census as living in Elizabeth City.
The Godbeys lived in lower Norfolk
for the next 50-75 years until Edward Godbey moved north to Middlesex County.
After his death, his wife, Frances, move southwest to Goochland County. Eleven
years after Frances’ death in 1739 the records show William Godbey's birth in
Montgomery Co. in what would later be
Pulaski Co.
