Descendants of Thomas Godbey (1587-1622) of England

 

 

 

 

Generation One

 

1.  Thomas GODBEY (934);[1],[2] born 1587 in England;[3] married Joane ? (935) circa 1622;[4],[5] died February 8, 1628 in Merry Point, Lower Norfolk Co., VA, murdered by a neighbor, William Bentley, in a drunken brawl.[6]

     He immigrated from England to Jamestown, VA arriving on May 23, 1610.[7],[8] He left from Falmouth, England on June 8, 1609 on the Sea Adventure and arrived in Jamestown, VA on the Deliverance.  The journey was interrupted by a shipwreck in the Bermuda Islands on July 28, 1609.  This adventure was thought to have inspired Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest.[9]

     Godbey lived on December 1, 1624 in Kiccoughtan, Elizabeth City, VA, between Newport News and Blunt Point.[10] The land record reads "Thomas Godbye, of Kiccoughtan, in the Corp. of Eliz. Citty, Yeoman & an Ancient Planter, 1 Dec. 1624, p.25. 100 acres, between Newport Newes & Blunt Pt., abutting westward upon land of William Bentlye &c. For his first per. devdt. (Cavaliers and Pioneers)"

The following is the land Record of Godbey’s neighbor who later killed him.  “WILLIAM BENTLEY, 50 acres, Dec. 1, 1624, page 24.  In the Corporation of Elizabeth City, a new planter who came to this country at his own charges in the Jacob in 1624.  As his first dividend, between Newport News and Blunt Point, adjacent Giles Allington and Thomas Godbye.” 

Godbey lived in 1625 in Elizabeth City, VA.[11],[12]

     Joane ? (935)[13],[14] was born in 1579 in England.[15] She immigrated in 1621 to Elizabeth Cittie, VA.[16],[17]

     Children of Thomas Godbey (934) and Joane ? (935) were:

+         2.        i.    Thomas R. (932), born 1623 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA; married Anne Bain (933).

 

Generation Two

 

2.  Thomas R. GODBEY (932);[18],[19] born 1623 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA;[20] married Anne Bain (933), daughter of George Bain (4279), before 1645; died circa February 15, 1653 in Elizabeth River, Lower Norfolk Co., VA.[21]

     Godbey lived between 1647 and 1653 in Elizabeth River, Lower Norfolk Co., VA.[22],[23] He was a planter in 1652 in Elizabeth River, Lower Norfolk Co., VA.[24]

     Anne BAIN (933)[25] was born circa 1625.[26]

     Children of Thomas R. Godbey (932) and Anne Bain (933) were:

+         3.        i.    Thomas (929), born circa 1645 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA; married Ann Jacob (930).

 

 

Generation Three

 

3.  Thomas GODBEY (929);[27] born circa 1645 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA;[28] married Ann Jacob (930), daughter of Captain John Jacobs (931) and Ann ? (4320), circa 1670; died before February 21, 1686 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA.[29], [30]

     He lived between 1649 and 1686 at Gaythers Creek (southern branch of Elizabeth River), Lower Norfolk Co., VA.[31],[32],[33]

 

     Ann JACOB (930)[34],[35] was born circa 1647.[36]

     Children of Thomas Godbey (929) and Ann Jacob (930) were as follows:

+         4.        i.    Edward (919), born circa 1675; married Frances ? (920).

           5.        ii.    Cary (4280);[37] born circa 1675 in VA.[38]
