KEISTER

 

Ballard KEISTER was born in 1844 in VA. He began military service before February, 1865 when he was listed  in the 54th VA INF, Co. I, records.  On 2/24/65 list of deserters. Deserted 2/1/65.  Resident of Flat Head, Floyd Co.

He married Nancy HAWLEY circa 1869.

 

 

Christian KEISTER was born on June 17, 1829 in Blacksburg, VA. He married Nancy E. MARTIN on April 5, 1855. He was a farmer with real estate valued at $750 and personal property valued at $625 in 1860 in Montgomery Co., VA.

     He began military service on May 12, 1862 in Camp Success when he enlisted in Co. F of 36th VA INF.  Present until captured at Waynesboro on 3/2/65. POW at Fort Delaware until released 6/20/65. Born in Montgomery Co. on 6/17/29, he was 6'5 with hazel eyes and black hair. Died in Blacksburg in 10/28/1912.

     He lived in 1900 in Blacksburg District, Montgomery Co., VA  He died on October 12, 1912 in Blacksburg, VA, at age 83.

 

 

David KEISTER; "Davie" was born on December 9, 1826 in VA. He married Margaret ROBINSON on October 3, 1853 in Montgomery Co., VA. He was a farmer with real estate valued at $300 and personal property valued at $400 in 1860 in Blacksburg, VA.

     He began military service on March 1, 1863 when he enlisted in the 14th VA CAV & later the 4th VA INF.  Private, Co. G. (from Montgomery and Roanoke counties) in 14th VA CAV.  Present through May 11, 1863.  Transferred from 14th VA CAV on Nov. 27, 1863.  Transferred to Co. L, 4th VA INF on August 15, 1863.  Wounded In Action (finger amputated) at Payne's Farm on November 27, 1863.  Captured at Spottsylvania C.H. on May 12, 1864.  Sent to Elmira.  Exchanged on 3/14/65.

     He was mechanic in 1866 in Tom's Creek, Montgomery Co., VA. He died on March 7, 1908 in Blacksburg, VA, at age 81; buried in West View Cemetery in Blackburg, VA.

 

 

David P. KEISTER was born in 1830 in Blacksburg, VA. He married Louemma Catharine LONG, daughter of Ephraim LONG and Hannah KEISTER, circa 1852. He was a farmer in 1854 in Montgomery Co., VA. He began military service on April 12, 1862 in Camp Success when he enlisted in Co. C of 36th VA INF.  Present until sick 10/62.  Deserted.  Later served as a boatman in 10/63 and served as a teamster in 6/64.

     He was carpenter in 1870 in Shellville, Montgomery Co., VA.

 

 

Edwin J. KEISTER was born in 1841 in Montgomery County, VA. He was a farmer on his father's farm with $200 in personal property in 1860 in Christiansburg District, Montgomery Co., VA.

     He began military service on May 9, 1863 when he enlisted in Co. F of 14th VA CAV (from Montgomery and Roanoke Counties) Private, Absent on leave 5/9-11/63.  Issued clothing on 3/9/64.  Absent sick in hospital Montgomery White Sulphur Springs on 9/27/64.  Absent without Leave 10/7-31/64.  Present 11-12/64. No Further Record.

      He married Martha Ann HALL, daughter of Allan HALL and Mary A. ?, on January 14, 1864 in Montgomery County, VA; On January 14, 1864, Edwin J. Keister married Martha A. Hall in Montgomery County, VA.  Edwin, a farmer and the son of Peter and Catherine Keister, was 23, single and was born and resided in Montgomery Co.  Martha, the daughter of Allen and Mary Hall was 16, single and she also was born and resided in Montgomery Co.

     The 1850 Montgomery County Census indicates Martha was actually 18 when she married Edwin Keister.  (From Montgomery County Wedding Records, Jan. 14, 1864).

     He died in 1887 in Roanoke, VA.

 

 

Henry F. KEISTER was born in February, 1838 in VA.

     He began military service on May 19, 1861 in Montgomery Co., VA when he enlisted in the 11th VA INF, Co. F. from Montgomery Co.-Preston Guards) at age 22. Wagoner. Absent sick 11-12/62.  Furloughed on 1-2/63. Absent sick 6-7/63. Present 10/18/64. 

     He married Melvina V. HAWLEY before 1873. He lived in 1880 in Christiansburg District, Montgomery Co., VA. He died after 1900.

 

 

Henry Jackson KEISTER was born on November 17, 1832 in VA.

     He began military service on July 16, 1861 when he enlisted in Co. L of 4th VA INF  (Co. L. from Montgomery Co., Blacksburg.).  Elected 2nd Lieutenant on 4/22/62 and promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 2/25/63.  Wounded in hip on July 3, 1863, at Gettysburg.  Promoted to Capt. on 11/27/63.  On duty through at least 4/64.

     He married Vitulia Melissia GALLOWAY in 1867. He was a farmer in 1868 in Montgomery Co., VA. He was teamster with $1000 in real estate and $1000 in personal property in 1870 in Blacksburg, Montgomery Co., VA. He lived in 1880 in Blacksburg, VA. He died in June, 1906 at age 73.

 

 

James Harvey KEISTER was born in 1828 in Montgomery County, VA. He married Phoebe Ann HARMON on April 19, 1855 in Montgomery Co., VA.

     He began military service on February 20, 1864 in Montgomery Co., VA when he enlisted in Co. F of the 14th VA CAV.  Present 9-12/64.  Paroled in Charleston on 6/25/65 when he was 37, 5' 10" with a fair complexion, grey eyes and auburn hair.

     He was a farmer in 1872 in Blacksburg, VA. He died circa 1877 in VA.

 

 

John H. KEISTER was born on July 1, 1842 in Montgomery Co., VA. He was a farm laborer on his father's farm in 1860 and a farmer in 1866 in Giles Co., VA.

     He began military service on August 31, 1861 in Camp Ellis, Giles Co., VA when he enlisted in the 24th VA INF, Co. F  (from Giles Co.).  Age 18.  Absent without Leave 7/1/63.  Joined 36th VA Battalion CAV on 4/4/64.  Admitted to Petersburg Hospital on 4/12/62 with debilitas.  Returned to duty on 5/7/62. Paroled on 6/16/65 at Charleston, WVA.

5'10 with dark complexion and dark hair and dark eyes.

     He married Ella BRAZEAL on December 20, 1866 in Montgomery Co., VA; On Dec 20, 1866 in Montgomery County.  John, a farmer,  was 24, single, born in Montgomery County but residing in Giles County.  Ella was 19, single, and born in Amelia County.  John's parents were Wm. and N. Keister while Ella's parents were EM & LA Brazeal. (From Montgomery County, VA Wedding Records). He married Mary MARTIN in 1871. He married Sallie WEBB in 1898. He died on November 4, 1913 at age 71.

 

 

John Henry KEISTER was born in 1841 in Montgomery Co., VA. He was a farmer in 1860 in Blacksburg, VA.

     He began military service before 1864 when he was a member of Co. F of 14th VA INF. Private.  May have served in Co. G, 36th VA INF.   Paid 12/24/64. No Further Record

     He married Nancy HEAVENER circa 1865. He was farm labor in 1870 in Blacksburg, Montgomery Co., VA. He lived in 1880 in Blacksburg District, Montgomery Co., VA.

 

 

Peter KEISTER was born in 1836 in VA. He was a laborer in 1860 in Montgomery Co., VA.

     He began military service on April 17, 1861 when he enlisted in the 4th VA INF, Co. G.  Age 25;  laborer. 7/21/61 (1st Bull Run) sent on special duty to attend the sick. Present with company until killed in action in August, 1864.

     This identification is not positive.  Co. G. is from Montgomery Co., VA.  The 1860 Montgomery Census has a Peter J. Keister living with the Rainey family.  The 1850 Census has only one Peter Keister in that age range.  This is Peter Keister, age 14, the son of Jacob and Margaret Keister.
