General Notes:
A note from Pat Hemphill indiates that John William CLINE was born in Pierce City, Lawrence County, Missouri.
Following his first marriage to Mary E. MC NATT John William Cline married 2nd time to Alice Luann Stark on 18 Dec 1881. Two children were born of this marriage: A son who died at birth and Audry Cline.
A 3rd child of William and Mary Mc Natt was unnamed because the child died at birth.
The following information complied by Muriel (Cline) ELLIS and submitted by a nephew, John Robert CLINE of Mexico, Missouri: John W. CLINE (a son of William C. Cline) was born February 11, 1849 and died January 12, 1926. He was married to Mary E, MC NATT February 29, 1870. Mary E. MC NATT was born December 25, 1851 and died in childbirth February 17, 1879. They were the parents of three children, (1) Dora I. born February 18, 1874. Dora I. was married to Robert W. CLINE, who was her third cousin. (2) Tennessee born November 9, 1876, died February 5, 1951. Tennessee married Milton PANNELL; (3) The third child was a boy who died at birth. After the death of Mary E., John W. was married to Alice STARK. They were the parents of two children, a son who died at birth and Audry who was born February 29, 1892. John W. CLINE was a well to do farmer who lived on the farm his entire lifetime".
The following information from Pat Hemphill: John William CLINE was fifteen when his father was shot and killed. He and his sisters ran the family farm under their mother's guidence. He had an open face and flourished a thick mustache. His large Cline ears didn't miss much. He loved horses and taught his three daughters to ride. To raise his horses and his stock, John bought a good deal of real estate in Lawrence County. On June 2, 1872, Marion J. and Nancy L. McNatt of Cook County, Texas sold John 120 acres of land in Barry County, Missouri for $200.00. It was a tract in the E 1/2 NE 1/4 and SW 1/4, NE 1/4, Sec 23, twp. 25, range 26. In the 1880 census of Lawrence County, Missouri, widower John and his daughters are listed as living with his mother's household, the original William C. CLINE farm. They moved to their own farm after his second marriage to Alice. His youngest daughter Audrey gives a good desription of her father John in her life story, "Hemphill Family History". "Daddy was left to help make a living for his mother and younger children when he was 15 or 16 years old, so he didn't get very much education only a few weeks in the winter, but he was what one would call a self educated fellow, never quit trying to learn something, he was Director of this little country school for years...My father never had any boys to help him "chore", always had hired men to help him with the farming, he had several acres of land in that county, a good horse, barn, etc. In 1904, he started one of the first Registered Hereford herds in Southwest, Missouri. I was his helper, he got a blazed face, sorrel horse for me to ride, (Old Prince). No girl ever thought of riding like a boy, he ordered me a nice 3 horned side saddle, so I grew up to be an out of doors girl, began to help milk when about seven...I helped with the stock for several years, kept all the records and registration papers...My father finally took in one of the girls' husbands as partner in the Hereford business, so my job ended". On November 6, 1919 John and his wife Alice deed property to Herman Hemphill, (NE 1/4 of NW 1/4, S 36 T 27 R 26 except for the railroad right of way).
In John's will, written August 13, 1925 (proven January 21, 1926, Lawrence County, Missouri), John left Alice all his personal and real estate plus $4,000 in Liberty Loan United States Government bonds, for her to enjoy the income. On Alice's death, his daughter Audrey and her husband Herman Hemphill were to have one quarter section (S 1/2 of SW 1/4 S 36 od T27 of R 26 and 16 acres of the N side of SW 1/4 of SW 1/4 S 36 T 27 of 26). He left similar plats in Lawrence County to his daughter Tennessee Pannel and Dora Cline. The Liberty bonds are to be divided among the three daughters at that time. Herman Hemphill was executor. Witnesses were Tillie P. Hanna, R.W. Smart. Source: Handwriten notes of Kate Audry Cline Hemphill; carbon copy of original will; deeds; 1880 census, Lawrence County, Missouri
