                                     THE FAMILY TREE OF DAVID TATE

DAVID TATE  born 1730 England, came to America as a Lieutenant in the  
Kings Service after the est. of the Colonies and never as far as we know 
returned to England. His term of service expired, he settled in Botetourt Co. VA, 
it was there that he met and married Catherine Thornton.

EDWARD TATE born July 19th 1755, Botetourt Co, VA son of David and 
Catherine Tate, md Sarah McMullen.Edward and his wife Sarah began house 
keeping in VA not far from Sweet Springs. They had three children, Nancy,
Edward and Catherine Tate. Then the family migrated to Greene Co, Tennessee. 
After they settled in Greene Co, they had the following children, Gersham, Carey 
and Jane Tate moved to the West, to either Illinois or Indiana. Some time 
afterward the parents moved to the same place, taking Robert with them. Robert Tate, 
afterward returned to Greene Co, Tenn.

DAVID TATE JR. :  b ca 1758 in VA, son of David and Catherine Tate.
He grew up in the part of Augusta Co, which was formed into Botetourt 
and lived there during the Revolution. He was in the Cont. Army and served 
as Sergeant in the VA Line during the Rev. War. (see pension records for more info)
He married ca 1784 Comfort Knox. Twelve years later he moved his family to
Grainger Co, Tennessee, his brother Edward Tate, all ready moved his family 
near, to Greene Co, Tenn. He died in the year 1838 Grainger Co, Tenn, and is 
said to be buried at Soloam Spring. His wife, Comfort Knox Tate is mentioned 
in his will, which is of record in Grainger Co, indicating that she was alive 
at the time of his death. A copy of his will is listed below.

EDWARD TATE  b July 19, 1785 Botetourt Co, Va son of  David and Comfort Tate,
md Feb. 25, 1816 to Mary Chamberlain Massengale, died 1872, David d 1868,
and both are buried in the Chamberlain Family graveyard on the plantation 
near May Spring. He bought the Chamberlain Plantation, one of the finest farms
on the Holston river in Grainger Co, Tenn, which he managed successfully and 
left a large estate at this death.

JOHN KNOX TATE b 1792 in Botetourt Co, VA son of David and Comfort Tate, 
md Dec 5 1816 in Grainger Co, Tenn to Rachel Carmichael. His name appears as 
a taxable poll on the list of Capt. Samuel Richardson in Grainger Co in the year 1814. 
He served as a soldier in the creek War under Gen Andrew Jackson, and after the close
of the hostilities he removed to Jackson Co, Ala, where he lived until 1829 when 
he moved back into Tenn, and settled in the Battle Creek Valley. He died Dec 20th 1853 
at his home in Marion Co, Tenn.

SAMUEL BAKER TATE  b 1796 Grainger Co, Tenn, the son of David and Comfort Tate,
 md May 8th 1828 Grainger Co, Tenn to Caroline Senter.Samuel Baker Tate and his 
wife made their home at the mineral springs which they developed into one of 
the most popular ante bellum resorts in the South. A hotel was built and long 
before the war, Tate Springs became a fashionable watering place with a reputation 
which it has maintained through out succeeding yrs. They had issue of five children,
all of whom died except the fourth child, Caroline who married her cousin 
Edward O. Tate

For many yrs before the Tate-Springs property passed out of the hands of the Tate Family
the resort was managed by Edward Tate and his sister Miss Harriet Tate, neither of
whom married and both of whom lived to a good old age. 
WILLIAM THORNTON TATE b 1798 Grainger Co, Tenn, son of David and Comfort Tate,
he never married and he settled at Rutledge Tenn. He was a merchant and had a
large fortune, he lived to be an old man and died at Rutledge. 
MILTON ORR TATE  b 1802 Grainger Co, Tenn, son of David and Comfort Tate,
was the youngest child of this family. He located to Clinton, in Anderson Co, Tenn 
where he took an active part in Public Affairs and served as county court clerk. 
He never married.
