Minister.He moved every 10 years around the State of Georgia. He was the first minister
of Summer Hill Baptist Church in Thomas Co. GA yr 1850. He was also a member of the
Christian Association and the Bowen Baptist Association . All of his son's served in
the Civil War and from records found and those yet to be found, only 2 returned home.

Summer Hill Baptist Church (Primitive at first, later Missionary) of Stewart Co.,
in the 22nd district, was constituted in 1837 and dissolved in 1905 and the building
torn down and sold September 10, 1852. About six miles northwest of Boston, in the
13th district of Thomas Co., a New Baptist Church was constituted and located at the
cross roads of the Old Tallahassee Florida Greenfield Church of Colquitt Co., road and
the present Thomasville and Summer Hill Road. Most f the Charter members were from
Shady Grove Church and all were former residents of Steward County and Possibly some
were members of Summer Hill Church of Stewart Co. Rev. William A. Tait a former pastor
of Summer Hill Church in Stewart Co., was the first Pastor. Francis Groom was the first
church clerk to be elected but soon resigned and was succeeded by Johathan Groom Miller.

JAMES HENRY TAIT: Born in GA October 1824, the first born to William A. and Catherine Tait.
He married 1st to MARTHA BACON in Marion Co., 1843 and she died following the birth of
their last child in 1861. She is buried in Thomas Co., GA. Martha Bacon Tait was the
DTR of Lydall and Elizabeth Bacon previously of VA and SC. Lydall Bacon died in
Marion Co., Georgia October 25, 1854. Her mother Elizabeth was supposedly a lady
with the maiden name of Cooke. The siblings to Martha were Elizabeth, Sarah,
Langston and Edmond Bacon.
James Tait moved every 10 years with his father and on December 31, 1862 he enlisted in
the Civil War. He joined Co., H, 3rd Batt'n Cavalry, which later became Co. H. 4 Regt.
Georgia Cavalry. Records states that on October 31, 1863 he was dispatched to
hunt deserters. Towards the end of the war he was promoted to Sgt. On May 25, 1865
He was paroled in Thomasville, Georgia. He surrendered to Brig. General E.M. McCook
by Major General Sam Jones C.S.A., at Tallahassee, Florida.
After the War, James returned home, and was listed in the 1870 census records as being
a buggy maker and a farmer. He remarried to Sarah Jane Hart and had two more children.
Sarah Jane Hancock Hart, she was the DTR of JOHN HANCOCK and Eliza Irvine. She married
Samuel J. Hart on June 06, 1859. On the 1860 census records it list Samuel and Sarah
with their daughter, Flora Henrietta Hart in Colquitt Co., GA. On the 1870 census records
Etta and her brother, Robert are listed in their grandfathers (John Hancock) household.
It is believed that Samuel died during the civil war. The Hancock family bible
stated that Sarah died in 1884 and her son Robert with in a week of her. Together they
moved from Georgia to Madison Co., Florida were Mary Tait (Darville) was born.
Sarah died in 1884.
James became sick during the war and on July 23, 1900 he applied for a Soldiers Pension,
which after records from Doctors, he received a total of $72.00 per year until his death
in 1907. He was laid to rest in Shady Grove Baptist Church, Dowling Park, Florida in a
unmarked grave.

He enlisted as a Private on 04 October 1861 in Thomas Co., GA. Enlisted in Co. K

There are no further records on Madison after 24 March 1865 when he was given furlough
from Jackson Hospital, Richmond Virgina.

WILLIAM H. TAIT: Born in 1832 Georgia. The third son of William A. and Catherine Tait.
Not much is known on him at this time. He enlisted in Feb 20, 1862 in Capt. Hopkins Co of
Cavalry (Wayne Rangers*) This company subsequently became Company A, 4th Regiment
(Clinch's Ga Cavalry. It was also known as Co. C Battalion of Cavalry South of the
Altamaha River. On his records states under remarks: Due him by Government hire of
his shotgun from June 1, 1862 to Feb, 28 1863. He also collected a allowance for his
horse in the amount of $24.40. Also transferred to Co. F from Co A August 1, 1863.,
transferred to Capt. J. Turner GA F 4 GA Cav. Sept 1863.
He was detached to hunt deserters Feb, 186 during the Civil War.

MARY ANN TAIT: Born in the year 1833. The Second daughter born to William A. and Catherine
Tait. She married in Stewart Co., GA, Frances M. Brooks, 07 Jan 1850. Her husband Francis
joined the Civil War from Randolph Co., GA. He enlisted as a Private on 26 September
1861 in Company H. 1st State Troops Regiment. Mustered out Company H, on 05 May 1862 and
Enlisted in Company G, 55th Infantry Regiment on 17 May 1862. POW on 09 September 1863 at
Cumberland Gap, Tn. Released on 18 June 1865 at Camp Douglas, Chicago, IL. I found listed
on the 1870 Mitchell Co., Census (listed below) with Mary Ann Tait Brooks listed as head
of the household. Also on the 1880 census records has her listed as living in
Decatur Co., GA. It seems that Francis M. Brooks died some time after or around the
birth of William Brooks in Randolph Co., GA.
FRANCES MILES BROOKS: (1829 - 1880)the son of BALAAM BROOKS (1781 - unknown) and
MARY MCGLAMMERY 1787 Massachusetts - Unknown GA). They were married in Warren County
Georgia 11 Aug 1802. There were 7 children born of this union.

It is belived that she passed after the 1900 census was taken and is buried in
Thomas County, Georgia.
BRANTLEY M. TAIT: Born in Elbert Co, GA 1836, the 4th son of William A. and Catherine Tait.
He married in Thomas Co. GA to MARTHA ANN BROWING yr 1859. He enlisted with the 1st
Brailsford Co. July 1862 at Camp Williams. Records then note that he joined in with
the 5th Cav. Co H in the Civil War. It is not known what became of Brantley as he never
returned home. Last note on his Civil War papers states that he deserted his unit
June 23, 1863. I believe that he was killed in battle and is buried in a unmarked grave.

He served in the Civil War, joined the (Clinch's) Cav. Co. A. F along with his older
brother William H. Not much is known of him at this time.
CHARLES M. TAIT: born in Marion Co. GA 1837 the 6th son of William A. and Catherine TAIT.
Married MAGDALENE born in GA yr 1840 {Maiden name unknown}. He served with the
GA 2nd Co. K Cavalry Regiment organized in Feb, 1862. The regiment surrendered with
18 men by General Johnston in N.C. 26 April 1865.

and Catherine TAIT. She married 1st David Ward of Thomas Co., GA. 24 Jan 1858.
He is listed on the slave census for Thomas Co., GA year 1860. David joined the
Civil War and never came home, died unknown.
She married 2nd to John Miles Hurst in Thomas Co., GA Jan 10, 1866. John Miles Hurst
was born in 1838 and died on 17 November 1901 in La Fayette Co., Florida buried at
New Hope Cem He enlisted in Captain Brailsford Co., on May 1862. Pension records
state that he surrendered in Tallassee, Florida May 1865. He is the son of
Thomas Jefferson Hurst b. 1806 Effingham Co. and Matalida Adams b. 1805 GA.
Census Records listings are 1860 with his parents, 1870 Camilla, Mitchell Co., GA.
John Miles Hurst married first unknown, had one child Florence Hurst born 1861, GA.

(1859-1957). He homesteaded 250 acres in Pasco Co. and served on the County Board.

AMANDA FANNY TAIT: born August 31, 1848 the daughter of James Henry and Martha
TAIT. She married W. J. Newsome. Only certain records have been found on her.
She is listed on the 1900 census records as a widow living in the home of her father.
There is a civil war pension record that she received in 1899. She was laid to
rest in the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church Cem. She died January 24, 1909 Lee,
Madison County Florida.
Notes found on the Florida Civil War Pension, W.J. Newsome died before 1899.
Joined August 1, 1861, 17th Georgia, Capt McGregor's Company. Fought and wounded
at Cold Harbor, Shot left side under shoulders, bullet lodged in his lung and was not
removed. Also stated was their marriage 22 December 1865 Mitchell Co., GA.
They moved to Florida April 1884. Recieved $60.00 Per year.

CHARLES LAFAYETTE TATE/TAIT: was born in Thomas Co., Georgia, July 04, 1881. He is the
son of James Henry and Sarah Jane TAIT. His parents moved from Georgia
to Madison Co., Florida after his birth. He married Florida Jones born August 10, 1890.
Charles died September 06, 1931 in Madison Co., Florida and was laid to rest
in Brady Cemetery. His wife past away February 17, 1948 and is laid to rest next to
Charles. He is listed on the 1917-1918 Civilian Draft Registration in Madison Co.

MARY VIRGINIA TATE/TAIT: was the last child born to James Henry and Sarah TAIT.
She moved to Pasco Co., Florida and lived with her older brother John Thomas.
There she meet and married (?) Darville. From records and stories told by
Charles living family members her and her husband had a strawberry farm and
did not have any children. She would come to visit Charles and his family every
so often along with Corrine TAIT Hancock the DTR of John Thomas. There has not
been any other records found on her as of yet.
