Descendants of Joseph Cole

Generation No. 1

JOSEPH COLE

was born 1801 in Town of Columbia, Herkimer Co, NY, USA, and died 1842.
He married ACHSAH PEARL, daughter of EBENEZER PEARL and LUCY COLE. She was born August 22, 1805 in Fairfield, Herkimer Co, NY, USA, and died July 04, 1886 in Clinton, Oneida Co, NY, USA.
More about Achsah's ancestry and lineage can be found on the PEARL webpage.

Notes for JOSEPH COLE:

Joseph Cole's ancestry is more than illusive to me. I have searched many different sources & can find little or nothing on this gentleman. His life span of only forty some years has made the search even more difficult. Few, if any, civil records were kept about births, marriages & deaths in the early 19th century. I cannot seem to discover what church he was affiliated with so obtaining church records has been another dead end.
In the biography of Byron Cole which I found it was mentioned that Byron was of Universalist faith, but that was written when he was an adult, he could have been baptized anything as a young boy.
A file with the Latter Day Saints (familysearch.org) claims there is a Joseph Cole born to Benjamin and Iscar Keep Cole in 1795 in the general area of search but I doubt this information and have nothing to substantiate it. There possibly was a Joseph Cole born to these folks but I don't believe it is the same Joseph I am looking for. Sources I have run across state that Benjamin was a devout Baptist and was also referred to as a Deacon. I don't believe a son would change faiths if the father was so deeply committed. Benjamin's headstone states he was born abt 1751, which would have made him fifty years old at the time of Joseph's birth (assuming that the LDS birthdate given is off by six years).

BYRON COLE

(JOSEPH) was born March 02, 1830 in Cedarville, Herkimer Co, NY, USA, and died November 13, 1905 in his home in Millers Mills, near E Winfield, Herkimer Co, NY, USA.
He married CAROLINE MILLER April 30, 1857 in Columbia, Herkimer Co, NY, USA, daughter of WILLIAM MILLER and NANCY HANER. She was born October 09, 1830 in Columbia, Herkimer County, NY, USA, and died October 25, 1904 in home in Richfield, Otsego Co, NY, USA.

Notes for BYRON COLE:

From "Biographical Review - Otsego County, New York 1893"
"Byron Cole was born...and attended school until he was thirteen years old. About that time his father died, and afterward until he was twenty-one he worked on the farm and attended school as opportunity offered. Then, in company with two of his brothers, he bought a large farm in the town of Columbia, Herkimer County, and the three worked it in partnership eight years, Byron at the end of this period selling out to his brothers, and marrying Caroline Miller... After marriage Mr Cole went to the town of Exeter, and worked a farm for five years, when he bought the place upon which he now lives. At that time the farm contained fifty-seven acres, and to this he has added from time to time until it now contains 192 acres. ...
"...He is a man very much respected in his town, and though solicited often to accept public office he has almost invariably preferred to devote his attention to his farm, the only exception being that at one time he served as Roadmaster. He is a most genial gentleman, a good neighbor and citizen, highly esteemed in the community, and has many friends. ..."

Notes for CAROLINE MILLER:

From a personal interview in 1999 with Alice Armstrong. Alice was, at the time of the interview, residing in the home that Byron Cole originally built for his wife Caroline. Alice vaguely remembers Caroline as being a "little old lady with white hair". When the first telephone lines were installed, Caroline became the telephone operator for the area. Some months after my interview with Alice I looked back over my notes and realized that something didn't quite add up. Caroline died in 1904, which would have made Alice close to 100 years old for her to have "remembered" Caroline. Although it is possible, she certainly didn't appear to have that many years under her belt. I am now more inclined to believe that maybe she was "remembering" things that had been passed down to her.

Marriage Notes for BYRON COLE and CAROLINE MILLER:
Byron Cole owned a plot of land on Route 20 between West Winfield and Richfield Springs, near the intersection of Skinner and Cole roads. The original house that stood on the foundation was too small for Caroline and their quickly growing family. Byron's expertise in building and carpentry, that same trait that has been passed down for several generations, aided him in his endeavor to build his wife something better. He moved the original house off the foundation via rollers and rolled it further up the hill on his property so the family could remain living there while he built a larger home on the same foundation.
Later, after many of the children had grown and moved on, the house then became too big for Caroline and Byron then built her another home, which is supposed to be an exact replica of the first, only smaller. This one is also still standing and is located about 3/4 of the way up the hill on Cole road, overlooking the original homestead.
The preceeding information was also thanks to Mrs Alice Armstrong.

He married (2) LIDA E GAGE September 20, 1930. She died March 22, 1938 in FL, USA.

Notes for EMERSON BYRON COLE:

From a personal interview with Mr Francis Fehr in 1997. Mr Fehr was a neighbor to Emerson Byron on Red Hill Road for many years, and was still residing there at the time of the interview.
"Mr Cole (Emerson Byron) was a very ambitious man and quite intelligent in whatever he took on."
Mr Fehr also attended school with Emerson Christopher for a few years but didn't know him very well. By the time Harold started school, Mr Fehr was enrolled in the New Hartford School District.
On a personal note, when I met with Mr Fehr in the spring of 1997 it was truly a lovely afternoon. He took me through his home and showed me old photos of his own wife (by then passed on) and his family. He seemed genuinely pleased to share any tidbits of information with me that he could recall.

Burial: Sauquoit Valley Cemetery, Church Road, Sauquoit, NY, USA

Notes for SARAH L SKINNER:
Mr Francis Fehr's recollections of Sarah were not many. He remembers her as a quiet woman who kept to herself and tended faithfully to her home and family. This somewhat contradicts Sarah's obituary from the Utica Observer Dispatch on May 12, 1922 which implies that she was well known in the community. It is as follows:
"Chadwicks, May 12 - The entire community is saddened by the death of Mrs Emerson Cole, which occurred at a Utica hospital late yesterday afternoon. Her maiden name was Sara L Skinner, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Christopher Skinner, born March 16, 1873, in the town of Richfield.
"Twenty-three years ago she married Mr Cole and five years later they came to their present home near Chadwicks. She is survived by her husband and five children: Adlai, Elmer, Emerson Jr, Caroline and Harold; also two brothers in Richfield Springs. The family has the sympathy of many friends."

Cause of Death: natural causes
Funeral Home: Warren Fisk

Marriage Notes for EMERSON COLE and SARAH SKINNER:
Emerson Byron and Sarah may have resided with one of their parents for a short time after their marriage as their first child, Adlai is recorded as being born in the Town of Richfield. Sometime after his birth and before the birth of Elmer in 1903, they purchased a farm on Red Hill Road in New Hartford. The original house may or may not be the same one that now standing. In the late twentieth century it became The Mum Farm. All of their children following Adlai were born there.
Emerson supported his family by farming. He kept Guernsey cows for milk and made butter to sell. He had an extensive chicken coop, including incubators for the the young chicks, and he sold the eggs to area residents. He also kept bees and sold honey. He was well known in the area as the first man to purchase a gasoline powered engine. He earned extra money for the family by transporting this engine from farm to farm via horse and cart to fill the farmer's silos.
As young children, all five of Emerson & Sarah's offspring were expected to attend school regularly. The school house was located on the corner of Snowden and Red Hill Roads. (If they were around today, they would probably all say it was up hill both ways!)
After Sarah's death, Emerson sold his homestead on Red Hill Road and moved into Sauquoit, where through the years that followed he sold and purchased two more homes. They were located at 2735 Church Road, 2933 Mohawk Street and finally 2979 Oneida Street.

Marriage Notes for EMERSON COLE and LIDA GAGE:
Shortly after Emerson and Lida were married they began spending their winters in Florida. This "snow bird" ritual was probably not a well honored tradition in the 1930's, but has certainly grown in popularity in the decades that followed.
They drove down each fall and returned each spring to New York. Emerson owned his home in Braden Castle, Florida as well as his home in New York. He had no social security or retirement to supplement his income so he lived carefully on his savings. His hard work and wise investments proved to pay off in the end and led to a comfortable latter part of his life.
After Lida's death, Emerson continued to winter in the south, even when the drive became too difficult for him to do alone. His youngest son, Harold then helped with the transportation, driving him down and flying back each fall, then reversing the trip in the spring.
There was also talk of a house keeper that Emerson took on after Lida's death. Her name was Margaret Emerson. She eventually took ill and left to live with family.
In reading over some historical articles about Braden Castle the name of a prominent board member, Dr. H. E. Robbins surfaces. Was this Dr. Robbins a relation to Douglas Robbins, husband of Carolyn and son-in-law to Emerson?

Notes for GRACE LODENA HOUSE:

According to some bits of information from Ken Calman, grandson of James Lee & Grace Lodina House Cole:
John Henry House, Grace Lodina's father hung himself in jail in 1924. Why was he in jail? He was a convicted serial killer of women and many skeltons were found under the floor boards of his house. He married (2) ORA ? Private. She was born Private.

Notes for EMERSON CHRISTOPHER COLE:

Emerson Christopher worked in a saw mill in Garrattsville, NY as well as owning and operating his own farm there. The love of carpentry and farming passed down from previous generations drew him to his choice of careers. What moved him from the Sauquoit/New Hartford area is not known. Bernice Amelia was born in Schoharie County and that could have been the purpose for the move to a central location between the two areas.
In 1944 the saw mill where he worked closed down. The owner was called to duty for WWII. Emerson then purchased his own saw mill in Westville, NY, moved there and continued to operate it until his retirement. He also ran a side business doing custom farm work for area farmers. He owned both a tractor and a combine and would hire out to plow and plant fields as needed.
Emerson was an avid outdoors man and gardner. He kept beautiful grounds and tended to a large and bountiful garden every summer. He was also a pack rat of sorts and had a large old barn that he stored all his treasures in. Some were antiques, some just kept for sentimental reasons and others still, simply junk. He loved it all and was always quite proud to show off his newest treasure to the next visitor that came along. He also had an avid interest in coin collecting and jigsaw puzzles.
Emerson died doing what he loved most. He was riding his garden tractor about the yard, puttering at his favorite pasttime when his heart attack struck. He was about to cross the road when he fell off. He landed by the mailbox and the tractor continued across the road, striking a swingset in the side yard before come to rest.

Personal Thoughts and Recollections (from Tammie Cole):
I do not have and memories of Grandpa Emerson and Grandma Bernice being together as they divorced and remarried two years before my birth. For me there were always two sets of grandparents to visit from my father's side which made Christmas and birthday celebrations a double treat! Every visit to Westville inevitably took us to the big barn so Grandpa could show off his new acquisitions and tell how he acquired them. Then he would go over all the older pieces, giving a brief story as to their meaning or value. We (myself and my siblings) were more than thrilled when he would give us some small token to take home. From time to time he would also pass a coin or two from his collection to my brother, who inherited the hobby from him.
Another fascinating adventure was to visit the upstairs and exchange the last puzzle borrowed for a new one to take home and construct. It was a time honored tradition and certainly a lost art today.
Christmas was always a big deal at Grandpa's house. We would arrive during the day on Christmas Eve and have a big dinner. After dinner Grandpa would bring out a box of presents for us that we would be taking home. We were allowed to poke, prod, shake and squeeze them, but on no uncertain terms were we allowed to open a single one until Christmas morning.
One incident I don't remember myself but have always been constantly reminded of at family gatherings (even today) was that of the "ginger snap day". I guess I could not have been more than three or four at the time. We were all sitting around the kitchen table having ginger snaps and milk. I must have grown quite fond of those ginger snaps and thought some would taste mighty good later. For every one I ate I tried to slip two into my pockets, unnoticed. No one said anything so I assumed I had gotten away with the dirty deed. When we were getting ready to leave Grandpa made it well known to everyone that I had pockets full of the wonderful cookies. After the laughter had settled he tried to offer me the bag to take home. Fully mortified and embarrassed over the whole situation I emptied my pockets onto the table and refused to take the bag. To this day, just the thought of a ginger snap cookie makes my stomach turn. What an impression that made!

Notes for EMERSON LEROY COLE:

Emerson LeRoy was born and raised in Garrattsville, NY. He first attended a district school there before transferring to Morris when the Garrattsville school closed. From the time he was about twelve years old he helped handle the operation of the family farm.
In high school Emerson played football and baseball and marched in the high school band. He played both drums and the susaphone. His nick name in school was "Mooney".
During high school and shortly after graduation Emerson held several jobs before enlisting in the Air Force in 1952. He worked for Lynn Coach in Oneonta, NY as an electrician, Scintilla Aeronautics in Sidney, NY and Harvey Sand and Gravel as a truck driver. In the Air Force he specialized in air training command and then served in the Korean Conflict. During this time he was injured in an airplane crash in Japan which resulted in a life long injury to his back and legs.
After discharge from the service, Emerson returned home to his family and quickly finished the task of home construction so his wife and children had a place to live. The art of carpentry and woodworking was passed to Emerson from his forefathers and the quality workmanship could be seen throughout the home. The knotty pine cabinets that adorned the kitchen were hand crafted by him. Although partially disabled and most likely in pain sometimes, he continued to work faithfully and never complained.
He worked for Silo Roofing, Raymond Corporation as a welder and the Austin Thompson Trucking in Mt Vision as a truck driver. Upon the owner's retirement in the mid 1960's, Emerson purchased the business and it became EL Cole Trucking. On the side he drove a mail truck for the US Postal Service and ran a local milk route for area farmers, picking up their fresh milk in the old fashioned milk cans and delivering them to the local dairy for processing. He was nothing short of an excellent provider for his family.
Emerson was an active member of the Garrattsville Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion in Hartwick and a lifetime member of the VFW in Morris.

A particular incident, as related from Anna Catherine Livesey:
One day while cutting wood to supply the family home with heat for the winter, Emerson happened upon a yellow jacket's nest and was stung many times. He was rushed to the local doctor's office just in time. The doctor later told Anna that his heart had stopped beating on the table and was lucky they were able to revive him.

Personal Thoughts and Recollections from Tammie Cole:
I remember very little of my father when my parents were together. I know I was his baby and he took me with him almost everywhere. The milk route was one of my favorite trips and he always made me feel grown up and important as I "helped" load and unload the heavy cans.
