Descendants of Edward J Livesey

Generation No. 1

EDWARD J LIVESEY

was born Bet. 1833 - 1834 in England, and died February 28, 1907 in Jersey City, Hudson Co, NJ, USA.
He married MARY J LEVANEY. She was born Abt. 1845 in Scotland, and died 1892.
Notes for EDWARD J LIVESEY:
The following is compliments of Anna Catherine Livesey Cole Powers:
"Very little is known about this man. Most of the information came from some 'papers' that Virginia Livesey located after the death of her sister and sister's spouse, Evelyn (Livesey) and Edward Curry.
"The Bible records Edward's death date, no more - no less. A year of birth (no month or day) is recorded on the copies of the 'papers' which revealed more about this ancestor than any of us knew.
"Seems like he was a Seaman - a boatswain...defined in the dictionary as a warrant officer on a warship or a petty officer on a merchant ship in charge of the hull and all related equipment. Apparently it was required that a Certificate of Character and a Certificate of Discharge be completed whenever taking a voyage. The certificates represent voyages taken from January to June 1862 between New York and Glasgow (probably Scotland); August-September 1866 between Glasgow and Scotland; and another journey dated September-October 1866 also between Glasgow and Liverpool. (Cool!!!) He would have been in his early thirties when he functioned in this capacity.
"Another document dated November 16, 1884 appears to be a letter of recommendation that was issued some eighteen years after we know Edward was voyaging back and forth across the Atlantic as a boatswain. If the letter came from the same company for which Edward was performing his boatswain duties, it means that he had left the company some years earlier and must have been working somewhere else since the letter states that he was employed there for approximately seven years. At any rate, at the age of fifty three (which is how old he was in 1886) he was apparently seeking another career change, or at the very least, a change in employer.
"We do know that his son Edward W Livesey was born August 1862 in Jersey City. That means that Edward J was sailing the ocean while his family was still young. Perhaps he tired of being away from home so much. We don't have any idea when Edward immigrated from England, but certainly prior to 1862. We also don't know his wife's maiden name nor what the middile initial 'J' stands for?? After much searching it finally was discovered that he is resting in Bayview Cemetery with many others from the Livesey family. This information did not come easy, as the cemetery records had his name spelled 'Sivesey'.
"The Family Bible also records the death of a Mary J Livesey in January 1892. On the assumption that this lady was the spouse of Edward J, a check was run on her through Bayview-NY Bay Cemetery and a match surfaced. A Mary J Livesey nee Levaney, was interred there on January 4, 1892. At that time Mary was 47 years old, and Edward would have been 59, twelve years difference...(hmmm??). However, notice was taken that the Mary Levaney Livesey's place of birth was Scotland...(hmmm again??). "The 'wrench in the gears' is that Mary's last known residence was 81 North 4th St, Brooklyn, NY. (So why was she buried in Bayview?) and did any of our Livesey family ever live in Brooklyn? I noticed that one of the Certificates of Character was dated in New York on June 17, 1862, two months prior to Edward W Livesey being born. However, Edward's death certificate says he was born in Jersey City. To further complicate things, a Louisa Livesey, age 28, last known address Jersey City, is buried in the same plot as Mary. This is all reflected on the Bayview-NY Bay information printout. Could Louisa have been a sister to Edward W Livesey?
"Anyhow, I'm not yet convinced that THIS Mary J Livesey is the same Mary J Livesey recorded in the Bible, or that Louisa is a part of our heritage. Hopefully time and substantiating documentation will shed some light on this."

Just to enlighten the reader - Anna Catherine is my mother and we have been working collectively on this 'genealogy thing' for some years now. As I was spending much time on my father's side, I pretty much left her to run with the Liveseys. Now, some months (or possibly even years) later, as I look over her findings I noted something she missed. On Edward J's death certificate it clearly states that he was 'married' at the time of death (1907), as opposed to single, widowed or divorced, all choices which were crossed out. My hmmm... The Mary J Levaney Livesey died in 1892 - hence, if she were Edward J's wife, his death certificate should have read 'widowed'.

Residence 2: Bet. 1869 - 1870, 459 Grove, Jersey City, Hudson Co, NJ, USA

Notes for MARY J LEVANEY:
An assumption is made here that Mary J Levaney Livesey, interred in Bayview-New York Bay Cemetery is the wife of Edward J Livesey. There is not documentation to substantiate this. A Mary J Livesey is listed under death records in the Cubberley/Witts Family Bible, but again, it is not noted that she was indeed the wife of EJL. The interment record was requested using the Family Bible information.
EJL's death certificate lists him as married at the time of his death (as opposed to single, widowed or divorced - all of these choices are clearly lined out by the preparer of the document). The fact that this Mary J Levaney Livesey died in 1892, prior to EJL's death in 1907 indicates the Mary J may not be the wife of EJL! This is yet to be discovered.

Although he initially received an honorable discharge, he re-enlisted and then for some reason went AWOL. He was eventually caught and returned to the service to face charges.
Bill possessed some carpentry skills and made some simple furniture pieces such as tables and stands."

It is believed that Bill married several times and had some children from one or more of these unions. He fathered set of twin boys, one which died in infancy. Efforts to locate any of Bill Jr's offspring have been unsuccessful.
In 1960, Bill was found dead by hanging somewhere in or around New York City in a bowery-type setting. The circumstances surrounding his death were questionable and although it was eventually written off as a sucicide, there were undertones of foul play.

Notes for GEORGE THOMAS LIVESEY:
George Livesey Nostalgia - through the eyes of his children, Edna Mae and Anna:
"George was the fifth child born to Edward W and Mary Catherine Witts Livesey. He was named George Thomas (according to him) after his Grandpa Witts. It is thought that he completed the fifth grade in school before dropping out.
Story is told that George, along with a buddy named Pauley McParland used to hang out at a garage which was located somewhere near the back yard of a home where an Anna Brown/Braun Finck resided. Anna took a liking to the young man named George and arranged an introduction between him and her daughter Edna...George and Edna ultimately married. George was always happy go lucky to the point of sometimes being silly. He possessed few skills but displayed a very strong propensity towards math - always able to calculate something in his head way before anyone else could figure it out on paper. He indulged in some very limited coin collecting and seemed to enjoy puttering in the flower beds and borders. For the most part, he seemed to exist just to keep his lovely wife, Edna happy. He did, however, possess a very strong stubborn streak, and was known to carry a grudge for a very long time. Sadly, George and his younger sister Catherine had an altercation early in their lives and both took that grudge to their graves decades later. George spent a good deal of his life humming to himself - perhaps his own way of escape."

Notes for EDNA MAY FINCK:
Edna May Finck Nostalgia - through the eyes of his children, Edna Mae and Anna:
"Edna was known to have a very biting tongue and seemed to possess a talent for alienating people on a frequent basis. For whatever reasons, she was also stingy with her table, sometimes slicing one tomato to feed ten people. She was the world's worst cook and had no conception of how to prepare and serve a decent meal (a trait that DID NOT rub off on her children). Her expertise, believe it or not, seemed to be in the area of food preservation, successfully canning fruits, vegetables, meats, soups, jams, jellies, etc. She even dabbled a little wine making (elderberry and dandelion) and made decent tasting marmalades, catsup, relishes and chutneys. However, when it came to serving the stuff, she simply lost it. She also did some beautiful handiwork that included knitting, crocheting and tatting. She was an excellent seamstess and taught both of her daughters to sew. Beyond that, her one big interest in life was George - as George's was of her."

Personal thoughts from granddaughter, Tammie Cole (that would be me):
"Although Edna's death certificate says she passed away from congestive heart failure, I am more inclined to believe she simply died of a broken heart. After her beloved George left her six years earlier she simply lost her will to live. She spent much of her time sleeping or just wandering aimlessly about the house where she resided with my mom (Anna Catherine) in her final years."

Marriage Notes for GEORGE LIVESEY and EDNA FINCK:
George and Edna Finck Livesey Nostalgia - through the eyes of his children, Edna Mae and Anna:
"At the time of their marriage (George and Edna), Edna had a six year old son by a prior marriage, Vincent (Buddy) Brannick. After the birth of their first child, Edna's desire was to return to work so Edna'a parents, Roscoe and Anna Brown/Braun Finck were invited to move in and take up residence with the family. (There were probably other underlying reasons for the move as well, which are discussed in more detail on the Finck page.)
1935 found the family looking to buy property and they set their sights on an old colonial home located in Upstate New York in a little country settlement called Welcome Center. They moved there, taking the whole family in tow. Work was extremely hard to come by in the country in those days and George was not able to earn enough money to support his extended family. In February, 1936, with a second child well on it's way, George and Edna returned to Jersey City, leaving young Edna Mae and Buddy under the care of their grandma Finck in the desolate country. After the birth of Anna Catherine the following month, they returned to the old colonial and George again attempted in vain to secure gainful employment.
In 1937 the family again returned to New Jersey and it is somewhat unclear as to where they stayed at the time. Surviving family members recall the family staying awhile with George's sister's family, the Arnolds. However, on an application for a Social Security number in June of 1937, George filled in 636 Ocean Avenue as his place of residence, which was at the time, the address of his father. Oldest daughter Edna Mae (who would have been about six at the time), seems to thing that perhaps George and Edna stayed with George's father while Grandma Finck, Buddy, baby Anna and herself stayed with the Arnolds. She (young Edna Mae) seems to recall learning how to play board games while staying at the Arnolds.
George finally secured a position at a superintendent of apartments in New York City and moved his family again - this time to House #530 on 138th Street in New York City. For reasons unknown, son Buddy, then 14, stayed on with the Arnolds and ultimately returned to Upstate New York where he found a job as a live-in farm hand. Buddy never returned to the family unit and was spoke of very little. It was not until the outbreak of World War II in 1941 that youngest daughter, Anna, learned she had a brother. Edna Mae recalls being about eight when she became aware. By this time, Buddy was in the Navy and had married Wanda Young. Possibly more talk about Buddy's safety during wartime and the impressionable age of the young girls were the keys to their newly found knowledge.
Sometime after 1941, George and his family relocated from NYC to 388 Summit Ave, Jersey City.
The Old Colonial in Upstate served as a summer home for the family, where they spent every day from the time school closed until Labor Day weekend when they were forced to return to the city.
The War was in full swing by now and George found himself working as a plant supervisor at Air Reduction. Edna was a supervisor for Ma Bell, the New York Telephone Company. War time didn't hinder George and Edna's lifestyles. If anything, the abundance of work and the supporting patriotism of the country probably added to it. They were both smokers and enjoyed partying and drink. Chesterfield was the brand and Schaeffer was the beer. There were always lots of parties, lots of family around and lots of friends. One of Edna's friends, Eleanor Strong, even lived with the family for awhile when they resided on Summit Ave.
In 1946 the family moved again - back to Upstate New York to the home that usually stood vacant for ten months of each year. It was more of a struggle to young Edna Mae, who had just two years left of school and had to say a tearful goodbye to all her city friends. Young Anna was more than delighted and relished the thought of staying in the open country year round. George kept his job at Air Reduction, spending weekdays in Jersey City and weekends upstate. Finally, he too, abandoned the busy city life for full time country living. Then vacations, long holiday weekends and summers took on a reverse roll and were often spent visiting friends and relatives in the city, or even better, yet, entertaining the rest of the city folk when they visited the Livesey country homestead.
After the final relocation, times again were tough and jobs hard to come by. George secured several different jobs in various places, including cheese factories, road work labor for the County, and then finally a position with Raymond Corporation as a chipper and grinder. While employed there he inhaled mega dangerous amounts of metal dust on a daily basis (which led to his medical problems later in life and ultimately contributed to his death). When he blew his nose, his handkerchief was BLACK. Can't imagine what his lungs looked like! George was an exceptionally hard worker and life was not easy. Except for an Avon route (which actually was VERY successful), Edna never did seek gainful employment again.
The girls were mostly raised by Grandma Finck, who continued to live with the family, and until her health failed, did all of the housework and meal preparation. Edna would often complain that you couldn't even take a drag from your cigarette because before you got a chance to put it back down, Grandma Finck was washing the ashtray.
George spoiled Edna...waited on her hand and foot. Grandma Finck often referred to her son-in-law as a mollycoddle. After Grandma Finck's passing in 1966, he brought her breakfast in bed, helped with the laundry, housecleaning, dishes and meal preparation. He even chauffered Edna on her Avon route evenings after his own long, hard day at work. He opened her car door, whether she was getting in or out, she patiently waited while he walked around the to her side of the car, and he carried all her packages (sometimes making four of five trips) back and forth to the house while she walked empty handed.
In 1971, a few years after George's retirement in 1968, a decision was made to sell the old colonial, a move that was not even discussed with their now grown children. George and Edna believed that their affairs were their affairs and it shouldn't included the children until things were well on their way. However, before closure on the sale, the house was totally destroyed by fire. They moved to a small mobile home in Burlington Flats, in close proximity to eldest daughter, Edna Mae, where they remained until they could no longer care for themselves. They then spent the remainder of their time residing off and on between their two daughters homes.
Many times over the years Edna bewailed the fact that she always wanted to settle in Virginia, not New York. Knowing how George catered to Edna, youngest daughter Anna finally asked how Dad had managed to win that argument. She answered that he simply refused to spend his life as a coal miner and back in those days, with the exception of coal mining, there were few other jobs for unskilled laborers in the State of Virginia."

Notes for HELEN RITA BUTLER: Anna again:
"As a child, Helen always appeared to be somewhat frail. She had a nervous flutter to her eyes, referred to as a 'nervous tick'. Somewhere around 1964 or 1965 Helen and her husband Jim Frye left Jersey City and relocated around the Jamestown, NY area. Although for a while Helen stayed in contact with a few select family members, she never returned to attend any of her siblings' funerals. Even more surprising is the fact that she never attempted to contact Mary, the niece with whom she grew up with and who were closer than sisters during their childhood. For awhile there was some minimal, sporadic contact betweeen the children of Helen and her first cousin Dorothy Arnold Schultheiss, that too ceased. All attempts to locate any members of that family over the past several years have resulted in dead ends."

ANNA CATHERINE LIVESEY

(GEORGE THOMAS, EDWARD WILLIAM, EDWARD J) was born Private.

She married (2) RICHARD GREEN 1972, son of LEANDER GREEN and RUTH BARTON.
She married (3) GLENN ROBERT POWERS 1985. He was born Private.
Notes for ANNA CATHERINE LIVESEY:
Memories from Anna Catherine Livesey conveyed to her daughter, Tammie Cole:
"Anna's mother, Edna May Finck tells a story of the birth of Anna Catherine at the Margaret Hague Medical Center. Shortly after the birth she, Anna Catherine, was placed on a shelf, forgotten about and almost died. Although it could be very well true that Anna was set aside for time, but common sense tells us that a newborn baby would do quite a bit of crying if it wasn't attended to in a timely manner. Anna questions whether or not death was really imminent.
As a young child, Anna Catherine first resided in New York City. At age four the family moved to Jersey City, NJ. In the 1940's, the Jersey City school system had a fall enrollment and a spring enrollment. In the fall of 1941, Anna was enrolled in Kindergarden. When the spring session arrived, her mother insisted that Anna be placed in the first session of first grade. The school was reluctant, but at Edna May's insistence they finally agreed, making Anna just slightly younger than her classmates.
Anna and her sister Edna Mae were very involved in dance starting at quite a young age. For a time they performed as a trio with another young lady who later went on perform with the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. Neither Anna or her sister Edna Mae would have been eligible for such an opportunity as the Rockettes had strict height requirements they would not have been able to meet.
The relocation to Upstate New York in the summer of 1947 again brought on a confrontation with school officials. Anna had only completed a half year of fifth grade so Morris School wanted her to begin the year over. Her mother was again insistent and Anna was bumped up to the sixth grade, now making her one full year in age behind her peers of the same grade, and ultimately able to graduate at the age of seventeen. In high school Anna Catherine played the saxaphone and marched in the high school band.
After the move to Upstate New York, Anna recalls many visits from her city cousins. Two of them, Billy and Johnny Finck frequently spent extended vacations there. There was an old abandoned house across the road that the children were forbidden to enter, but this never stopped Anna, Billy & Johnny. The spent countless hours there, examining the furnishings and treasures there. One particularly favorite game was playing "dress up" with old clothing and hats discovered in some trunks stored in the attic.
Anna and her sister Edna Mae were frequently called upon to entertain at the many parties their parents held or attended. Often it would be outside and they would be placed on the back of a flatbed truck to perform their latest dance steps."

Anna Catherine's own synopsis:
"Anna, also known as 'Ann' dabbled in a variety of activities in her lifetime. While married to her first husband she owned and operated a greenhouse/bedding plant business. Later she entered the work world as an entry level clerical worker for the Chenango County Association for Retarded Children and twenty eight years later retired as Vice President of Administration. Her focus was in Personnel Management. By the year 2000, Ann had volunteered 43 years to the 4-H youth program, first as a club leader then as a resource leader, serving as horticulture, vegetable crops and crafts judge in the Youth Departments of the local fairs. Under her direction, the Horticulture Teams placed first and second in state competition. With her daughters, Melody and Annette, Ann runs a home based Herb and Spice business and markets herbs, spices and therapeutic & natural by-products at area craft shows. Hobies include genealogy (with youngest daughter Tammie), sewing, flower and vegetable gardening and food preservation. At age 65 (at the time of this writing) she is still growing and preserving her year's supply of vegetables, homemade soups, fruits, jams, jellies, herbed vinegars, etc. Ann also is proficient at cake decorating, making special occasion and tiered wedding cakes for family members."

Personal Thoughts and Recollections from Tammie Cole:
"My mother always seemed to be successful in whatever endeavor she undertook. Although she never worked outside the home while married to my father, she managed to run a very lucrative greenhouse business Her green thumb that was passed down from previous generations aided in her beautifully kept grounds.
After the separation of my parents, my mother strived to provide in any way she could, in order to see that her children were not lacking. She began working as a bartender until she landed a position with the Chenango County ARC in Norwich, NY. She quickly moved up the corporate ladder in the fast growing organization.
My mother also dabbled in cake decorating and was well known for the many beautiful cakes she provided for parties, weddings and the like. She also used her creative hand in crafting and sold her wares at area craft shows. Her latest interest drew her to herbal home remedies, a medical approach to healing using only natural oils and substances. It seemed that no matter what my mother undertook, she seemed to excel."

In efforts not to repeat myself, descendants of Anna and Emerson can be found on the Cole page.
