NOTE: The Salyer Family
lists Kirk and Richard Salyer as children of Rebecca West and Charles Salyer.
However, they are not included, in my family file, because there is no information
or documentation that supports that they ever existed. Unfortunately, The
Salyer Family does not list a source. The Salyer Family also omitted Oliver
Perry Salyer, he is included based on the 1860 Shelby County, IL Census and the
Obituary of Rebecca Salyer.

"Records indicate
that the oldest child of Levi Salyer was probably John. The following
information concerning John Salyer was compiled by the late Nellie C. Hiday of
Salem, Oregon, and sent to the author several years ago. How she arrived at the
birth date of 1763 in Greenville, South Carolina, for John Salyer is unknown.
If that birth date is correct then the female in the household of Levi Salyer
in 1800 was not old enough to be his mother. Also, John would have been at
least thirty-three years old at the time of his marriage."
"John Salyer, b.
ca. 1763? ; d. by 30 Aug. 1819 when his will was exhibited in Fayette County,
Indiana. His only wife was Elizabeth Scott, b. ca. 1772, d. 1852 in Fayette
County, Indiana. John apparently owned
no land in South Carolina. The only record, other than the 1800 census, found
in South Carolina concerning him is the deed he proved in 1799. Only three children of this couple can be
identified: Charles Salyer ; James
Scott Salyer ; Peggy Salyer, who is called "my oldest daughter" in
the will of her father. Peggy was not
of age at the time of her father's death; therefore, she was born after
1800."

get copies of those records from Fort Wayne In. library." Source: David E

Letter from Elisabeth
Salyer 9-8-1997, "I told David E Salyer in my letter to him written 16
July 1997 that very good cirucmstantial evidence indicates that your Levi was a
son of Charles Salyer who appears to have died during the French and Indian War.
His inventory of estate is in Culpepper Co. Va Will book A p. 153. (see p. 8 of
my book)"
"The chapter of
old Levi begins on p. 503. Since 1981 when I complete my book I have found more
of Levi. I believe he was born prior to 1740 probably in western VA and he died
in Aug. 1811 in Franklin Co., IN, which
at that time was Indian territory. He was living in Culpepper Co., VA in 1765
and appears to have followed the migration down the valley of VA into western
NC by the early 1770s. Culpepper Co VA, deed bk E p. 24-25, Levi witnessed a
deed in Culpepper between Abraham Smith and Robert Deathearge concerning the
sale of a horse. 3 January 1765."
Children of Levi
Salyer and Margaret are:
4 i. John Salyer, born Abt. 1763 in South
Carolina; died Abt. August 30, 1819 in Fayette County, Indiana; married
Elizabeth Scott Bef. 1797 in Probably South Carolina.
ii. James
Salyer33, born Abt. 1770 in North Carolina; died November 30,
1858 in Marshall County, Kentucky; married Temperance Spouse Bef. 1801; born
Abt. 1773 in North Carolina.
Notes for James Salyer:
Source: "The
Salyer Family" by Elisabeth Salyer p. 509
"James Salyer, was
probably b. ca. 1770 and d. 30 Nov 1858 in Marshall County, Kentucky. The death
record lists his parent as Levi Salyer and birthplace as North Carolina. His
age was given as ninety-four. IN this case the census records are possibly more
accurate. His only wife was Temperance born ca. 1773 in North Carolina. She
survived him and in 1860 was living in Palma, Kentucky.
James purchased two tracts of land in
Greenville District of South Carolina in 1805 which should indicate that he
intended to live in that area. No grantor deeds have been located to indicate
when he disposed of the land. He left South Carolina prior to 1810 and
apparently moved to western Tennessee. Records indicate that he perhaps settled
first in an are of Humphreys County which was cut off from Stewart County in
1809. There is no 1810 census extant for either of those counties and both have
suffered a great loss of records due to fires.
James and family appear to have resettled in
an area of Caldwell County, Kentucky, which was cut off to form Hickham County
in 1821 and Calloway County in 1822. Marshall County was formed in 1842 from
Calloway. Only three children of this family can be identified: Samuel, Charles
and James Salyer."
iii. Charles
Salyer34, born Bef. 1774; died Abt. 1817 in Caldwell County,
Kentucky35
Notes for Charles
Salyer:
Source: "The Salyer Family" by Elisabeth
Salyer, page 508-9.
"Charles Salyer,
very little is known about this Charles.
He was born before 1774 and apparently lived close to his brother James
in 1800. He owned no land in South
Carolina and possibly was the first of the family to leave that state. Records indicate that he died intestate in
Caldwell County, Kentucky, in 1817. (Inventory Book A, pp. 325-344) Sarah
Salyer was named adminitratrix of the estate with Moses Crow her surety. No
Salyers were listed in the 1820 Census of Caldwell County. Sarah, the widow of Charles, may have been
living with her parents when that census was enumerated. Sarah Salyers was
listed as head of a household in the 1830 Caldwell County Census. She had one
male 15/20; one 20/30 and a girl child 5/10. Sarah herself was not listed. (She
was probably omitted when the census was copied. The census records one reads
on microfilm are nto the census schedules prepared in the field by the
enumerators but rather copies of their originals.)
A Mrs. Sarah Salyers married 20 November
1833 in Caldwell County, Eli Nichols. On 20 August 1820 Sarah Salyers gave
consent for John Salyer to marry Lucinda Wofford in Caldwell County, and on 21
January 1823 a Sarah Salyers mared Charles Hues in Caldwell County. Further
research in Caldwell County record should reveal more on this group of
Salyers."
iv. Levi
Salyer, Jr.36, born Abt. 1774; died October 1805 in
Greenville County, South Carolina.
Notes for Levi Salyer,
Jr.:
Source: "The
Salyer Family" by Elisabeth Salyer, page 511.
"Levi Salyer, Jr.,
b. ca. 1774; d. Oct. 1805 in Greenville Co., S. C. Records indicate that Levi,
Jr. was apparently ill for a long time prior to his death. There is no mention
of a widow or minor heirs in his estate settlement. On 4 November 1805 Levi Salyeir [sic] and Ambrose Blackburn were
appointed administrators of the estate of Levi Salyer, Jr. Charles Bennett,
Elijah Bennett and Samule Cosson were the appraisers of the estate which was
actually quite a large one as compared with other estates of the era. (Levi
Salyer, Sr. sold land to Elijah Bennett 16 October 1805.) It is quite probable
that Levi, Sr. and some of his family left South Carolina shortly after the
decease of Levi, Jr. On 9 Mar 1807 a yearly return and final settlement of the
estate of Levi, Jr. was returned on the oath of Ambrose Blackburn, the other
administrator of the estate. (Greenville Co., S.C., Adm. File 7-8, No.
444.)"

"I told David E Salyer in my letter to him written 16 july 1997 that very
good circumstantial evidence indicates that your Levi was a son of Charles
Salyer who appears to have died during the French and Indian War. His inventory
of estate is in Culpepper Co. Va Will book A p. 153. (see p. 8 of my
book)" "The chapter of old Levi begins on p. 503. Since 1981 when I
complete my book I have found more of Levi. I believe he was born prior to 1740
probably in western VA and he died in Aug. 1811 in Franklin Co., IN, which at
that time was Indian territory. He was living in Culpepper Co., VA in 1765 and
appears to have followed the migration down the valley of VA into western NC by
the early 1770s. Culpepper Co VA, deed bk E p. 24-25, Levi witnessed a deed in
Culpepper between Abraham Smith and Robert Deathearge concerning the sale of a
horse. 3 January 1765."
