Genealogies are personalized histories of the world.
Like many other American families, some of our ancestors came early, settling
in New England, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Other members came later.
Some came from the Netherlands, escaping invading Nazis and some from Hungary,
escaping Russian tanks.
Some fought in wars from the Revolution to Vietnam. Some were Quakers, Mennonites, Methodist ministers, Scotch, Irish, German and Dutch. There are pioneering farm families, gold-seeking adventurers, blacksmiths, seamstresses, opera singers, pharmacists and, of course, a rumored pirate. It is difficult to capture the special character of each family member, but where possible pictures and letters are included. The process is on-going.
Special thanks to Preston Polk who collected the Preston
family information--more of which will be added--and to Elwood Vail for
his efforts recording the Johnson, Vail, Preston, Hoskins and Hollingsworth
family stories.
