Feb. 3"Sarah Johnston came back home last evening - where she had been in Buffalo. taken there by J. Ard. "Adultery" - the trouble"
Feb. 9"Sarah Johnston had a young son to John Ard this morning - excitement at fever heat"
Feb. 15"was at prayer meeting - Session met and talked over the scandal that was current in regard to some members of the church -"
Feb. 17"Mrs Ard died today half past 12 Oclock - Jim getting writings fixed to take possession of Peglers market."

Mar. 3"sad news to hear of G. W. Pattersons son - sent to States prison for two years on a/c of receiving money in his Bank under false pretences - afterwards this news was contradicted -"
Mar. 10"This evening Thomas James Thompson (Saml son) was arrested by 2 detectives & taken to Buffalo - crime - trying to get parties to pay him money for articles he claimed he had got at the Ashtabula disaster belonging to these parties - under an assumed name -"

Mar. 16"Knights of Honor Lodge was organized here to night - there was 29 joined - charters members I was one & one of a com of 7 that was chosen to name the Lodge - I named it Olive Lodge"
Mar. 25"We were awok last night or rather this morning about 2 Oclock by the bells ringing for fire - 3 buildings in the McClurg block South Portage were burned - Spencers - Trasks & Fairchilds - there was very little wind and it was favorable ... The fire was the work of an incendiary"

May 17"session met, Mr. Green signified his intention of dissolving his pastoral relations with this church."
May 20"Mr. Green preached & gave notice of a Church meeting to be held for the purpose of asking Presbytery to dissolve his pastoral relations with this church"
May 28"went to the Church Society meeting - called for the purpose of choosing a delegate to go to Presbytery to unite with Mr. Green in asking Presbytery to dissolve the Pastoral relation now existing between Pastor & people"

July 23"The news from Buffalo this morning are that the Rail road men have struck & our Co. of militia are ordered to go - Great excitement - our boys left on a train at 8 oclock - 57 in all - Frank Johnston with them -"
July 24"sad news from our boys in Buffalo - they were run into a mob of the roughs of Buffalo & it is a wonder they were not all killed. there is no mistake but the Conductor of the train & Engineer were to blame for running the boys into such a mob"
July 25"Great excitement here in regard to the trouble in Buffalo a good many of our men that got scattered from the Co. returning home - some of them wounded - some 7 or 8"
July 26"great excitement about the strikers in Buffalo - there was a train passed east with mail & passengers this forenoon & some one or two from the east leaving Buffalo guarded by soldiers"

Oct. 22"at Meeting of Board of Education & was elected clerk for another year"
Oct. 24"We were awakened last night by the sound fire Bells & some one pulled our door bell about one O'clock and we ran to see A. D. Welles Lumber yard & Building totally in flames & in less than one hour - all was burned to the ground - luckily no other property was burned"
Nov. 16at School Trustee meeting to review the assessment roll
Dec. 1"The Lodge of Knights of Honor extended an invitation to Portland Lodge K of H. and after the regular Order of business last evening - we repared to the Minton House where there was a bountiful supper in waiting for us - some 55 in all of us - we had a good time & got home about 12 oclock"
