The Family of Ellen Quigley Solon (1862-1936)

The photographs on this page are courtesy of Joe Peace, grandson of Ellen Quigley Solon.

Ellen Quigley married Martin Joseph Solon of Kiltimagh, County Mayo, Ireland on November 23, 1886. Martin Solon like his brother Dudley, a Chicago alderman of the west side, was a saloonkeeper for most of his life, and because of his connections in westside politics was also employed by the city as a boiler inspector for a time.

Ellen appears to be pregnant so we can date the photograph around 1888 probably just before the birth of their first child--Vincent.

It was located on Madison st. near Halsted avenue. When the Eisenhower expressway was being built, the saloon was torn down and John moved it to Central ave. and Madison across the street from the Senate Movie House, and named it The Senate Cafe.
