Surname particular to AUNGST, to include other census and ancestral data for connective families.

PRELUDE: My great grama Mattie (Aungst) Robacker was a nurse. Her adoptive father John Aungst was a Walpole Mason and built the Mason building at Crane Ohio, Wyandot County. Mattie and Samuel Robacker had my grama Ophelia Robacker born 1892 Ohio who married 1912 Clinton Black at Oregon.

Photo of Frank E Black 1863 OH 1927 CA and wife Margaret A (Current) 1869 IN 1932 CA. "Maggie" as young lady to the right. Their only child, Clinton Ellsworth Black 1886 OH 1973 CA married 5/1/1912 at Clackamus County OR, Ophelia May Robacker 1892 OH 1919 OR, d/o Samuel J Robacker 1864 OH 1945 OR and Mattie (Aungst) 1867 OH 1940 OR. Mattie was adopted daughter of John Aungst 1838 OH 1911 IN and Elizabeth M (Crunkilton) 1843 OH 1919 OR; d/o Robert Crunkilton and Jane (Wilson). John as son of Richard Aungst and Elizabeth (Myers).

Clinton and Ophelia Robacker Black had three children: (1) Robert C Black 1913 OR 1986 CA; (2) James W Black 1915 OR 1932 CA; and (3) Ellen M Black Teeter Cook 1917 OR 2004 VA (she twice married). Clinton Black, after the demise of Ophelia (1919 age 26), remarried 1929 Nana Lois Bresler Biddlecome and had little Nana L Black 1930 (Mrs. Joseph Hughs). Clinton Black raised 6 children: 3 by Ophelia, 1 by Nana Lois, and 2 stepchildren (Harry and Robert Biddlecome).

My great great grampa, John Aungst (9/1838 Bellville OH - 1911 Ft Wayne IN), his wife Eliza, and child Mattie, lived in Richland and Wyandot Co OH. John and wife are also at Crane, Wyandot Co OH in in 1900 and 1910. They moved to Ft Wayne IN when he became ill, where he died, living at his daughter's home (Mrs. Sam Rohrbacker). John and Eliz M Aungst are buried Nevada Cemetery, Eden Turnpike (Upper Sandusky) Wyandot Co OH. John Aungst was a Mason, master carpenter, and contractor by trade. His wife's parents, Robert C Crunkilton 1814-95 and wife, Jane (Wilson) 1815-1906 married 1838, he from Franklin County PA and she at Wooster, Wayne Co OH from MD; they also buried Nevada Cemetery. John and Elizabeth Crunkilton Aungst married 1861 and adopted Mattie (Mrs. Samuel Aungst Robacker) 1867 OH 1940 OR; Mattie being my great grama who had Ophelia Robacker Black sister to Avery W Robacker). Mattie's biological parents were James Aungst and Martha J Lemley whose mother was a Grice; he being related to Sam S and George W Aungst, per June 1867 court records of Richland Co OH.

Grice, Margaret 12/26/1800 - 9/3/1887 - Richland Co OH was mother of: Anna Mary d 5/17/1877 68y 3m, 13d w/o John Gotlieb Lemly 9/15/1873 71y, 3m, 24d. Buried Richland Co OH.

Elizabeth Crunkilton Aungst went from Ft Wayne IN to Oregon about 1911 after her husband John died, with her daughter Mattie (Mrs Samuel J Robacker) and their children (Avery and Ophelia) where she died (buried OH with husband, John). She died a few days earlier than her grandaughter, Ophelia Robacker Black (my grama) in 1919 at Clackamus Co Oregon. Mattie and Samuel J Robacker divorced in 1917 in Oregon; Mattie went to live with her son (Avery Robacker and wife Anna Laurie Reardon), where she died. Ophelia and her mother Mattie are buried side by side in an Oregon City suburb, OR ~ see photo page. Clinton Black (widower 1919) and his three children (Robert, James, Ellen) went onto Escondido CA and lived with his parents (Frank and Maggie); he remarried (1929) Mrs. Nana Lois Bresler Biddlecome and had another (little Nana Black who became Mrs. Joseph Hughs. Sam Robacker remarried Rosa O Drips.

Wilsons, Crunkiltons, DeJeans, Myers, McCurdys, and Aungsts are buried at Nevada Cemetery Eden Twp Wyandot Co OH. Samuel J Black was pall bearer at John Aungst's funeral in OH in 1911, and member of Walpole Masons as well as John Aungst and others who attended same.

One census says John Aungst's father was from NY or VA and his mother from OH ~ two other censuses say his parents are from Ohio and another unknown. From another, it appears John's parents were from OH PA and MD VA; respectively. When John Aungst died (1911), he left behind two sisters who then lived in IN, per his obit.

Samuel J Robacker was the son of George Jacob Rohrbacher (born 1815 Weingarten Germany; emigrating circa 1837 to America, died 1894 married 1840 Sarah Eckerts 1820 PA 1883 OH); (lived 1850 PA), of Sandusky City, Erie Co OH. Sam had a brother, John b 1847 and other siblings; some of whom lived in Erie, Richland, and Fairfield Cos OH. Sarah was d/o Andrew and Elizabeth Eckerts.

Samuel and Mattie Aungst Robacker had two children: Ophelia May Robacker (1892 OH 1919 OR); and Avery W Robacker (1889 OH 1955 OR) who married Anna Laura Reardon. Note: Mattie's mom (Elizabeth Crunkilton Aungst) had sisters, Lydia Crunkilton Myers (Robert), Ophelia J Crunkilton DeJean (Avery W), the latter died 1878, and Mrs. Esther McCurdy.

Ophelia Robacker married May 1, 1912 Oregon City OR Clackamus Co (William Current, witness), Clinton Ellsworth Black (1886 OH 1973 CA) (my grampa, a Baptist) and had children, as mentioned. Ophelia died age 26, April 3, 1919, with pneumonia (great flu epidemic), leaving my grampa Clinton a widower. Ophelia's grama, Elizabeth Crunkilton Aungst (b 1843 OH) died March 29, 1919 the same year and was brought to OH to be buried along side of her husband, John Aungst at Wyandot Co OH. Grampa Clinton E Black and his children (Robert, James, and Ellen) sailed the Yankee Doodle barge onto California to his parents, Frank and Margaret Current Black (Frank 1863 OH 1927 CA; Margaret (1869 IN 1932 CA). Margaret was the daughter of Sylvanus (Sylvester) and Alice A (West) Current.

Sylvanus aka Sylvester Current was born at Warren near Trumbull Co OH, as son of Mathew and Elizabeth Current, he born PA of OH onto IN. Sylvanus married twice; Margaret (Maggie) was the daughter of Sylvanus 1833 OH - 1906 IN and his first wife, (Alice A West Current 1840 OH - 1876 IN). Alice was daughter of Clement Jr and Rhoda (Johnston) West. Clement West Jr was born 1794 NY and died 1872 per IN records. Rhoda (1812-1882) was daughter of either a James or William Johnston/Johnson. Clement West Jr was son of Clement West Sr b 1760 Dutchess Co NY onto Ulster Co NY onto Luzerne and Greene Cos PA onto Wayne Co OH where he made application for Revolutionary pension in 1832 (denied; did not serve 6 consecutive months; Rev Sldr #R 11337 b 1760 from NYS). Frank Black (1863-1927), RR conductor, was maternal grandson of Henry and Susan Carey Black from Perry County OH onto Hardin Co OH. Frank Black was related to Charles Edward Sleichter (Ed's mom was Elizabeth Black d 1874 w/o John Sleighter/Sliester) d 1879; she d/o Henry and Susan Carey Black). Chas Edward Sleichter (also seen as Schliester) married Minnie Kennedy/Canaday (1878-1958 CA) and had Ray W. Chas (Ed) also worked for the railroad. Minnie was the d/o John and Louise (b IL d 1937 CA) St Mary Canaday. Louise was d/o Alexander St Mary. Much bio and historical data has been written about the Canaday family for Kern Co California. Frank Black also had a cousin, Mrs. Ruthelle Laughrin of Lima OH whom he visited in the early 1900s whose parents were from Hardin Co OH. Frank is found in 1870 and 1880 at Hardin Co OH as Frank E Church and grandson of Henry and Susanna Carey Black. There were three females born to Henry and Susanna Carey Black who lived to maturity: Rachel Firestone (James); Elizabeth Sleichter (John); and Matilda Davis (James). On Frank Black's death certificate, it lists his father as James Black; no mother named. It is likely that his father (a Church) died in the Civil War and his mother remarried another. However there is also a James Black in Perry Co OH who could be the parent of my great grampa and s/o Henry. The 1840 census for Perry Co OH indicates Henry Black, wife and 4 children under 10 (2 F; 2 M); so that in 1850 James may have lived elsewhere as one of the others, Rachel did (she, at Fairfield Co OH with other Blacks. There is a James S Church as s/o Augustus and Marg Church who enlisted Feb 1864 and died in the Civil War in 1864, of Fairfield Co OH. And, there is a Ben Frank Church also. It would appear that Frank Black as F E Church took his family name of Black upon maturity. His grampa Henry Black died in 1879; his grama Susanna Carey Black died in 1892, at Wooster. Frank went to California about 1891 (land records and bio).

SLEICHTER, CHAS EDWARD 12/20/1872 - 5/7/1945 CA SACRAMENTO was s/o Eliz Black d 1874 w/o John C Sleighter d 1879 Hardin Co OH; d/o Henry and Susanna Carey Black of Perrry and Hardin Cos OH. Both Ed and F E Church Black are grandsons of Henry. John Sleighter was the son of George b Germany and Phoebe Slitcher of Perry Co OH; and had sisters Caroline and Mary.

Ophelia Robacker Black (1892-1919) (w/o Clinton Black) and her mother, Mattie Aungst Robacker (1867 OH 1940 OR), as well as Ophelia's brother, Avery W Robacker (1889 OH 1955 OR and wife, Anna Laura (Fallon) Reardon 1889-1985), are buried Clackamus County, Oregon. Avery W Robacker and wife (Anna Laura Reardon d/o William) lost a child in 1915, also buried with them. I have the wedding rings of Avery and Anna who married June 1914). Mother kept some old photos tucked away. One pic is of two women which says on the back, "Mrs. Lizzie (Crunkilton) Aungst (wife of John), sister to Lydia Crunkilton Meyers". Lydia Crunkilton was born 1852 and wife of Robert Myers born 1851 who had two children, Wilson and Louis Myers). Lizzie and Lydia are sisters to Samuel L Crunkilton, Mrs. Esther (James) McCurdy, and Mrs. Ophelia J (Avery) DeJean both d 1878; they being children of Robert C and Jane Wilson Crunkilton. Esther and Ophelia predeceased their father, Robert Crunkilton who died in 1895. Another picture was of John and Lizzie Crunkilton Aungst.
