Ancestors of the Thomas Tennant who married Judith Butler

Introduction - Tennant Genealogy Information - Ireland and UK

I set out to put my own notes onto the internet and to concentrate on Pierce Tennant, his prodigy and his ancestors but so much information has come my way from the internet and other kind researchers that I feel obliged to put at least some of it onto the internet so that others may have the benefit. However enough is enough !! My apologies for unintentionaly repeating myself in some areas but the project has lasted longer than my memory.

The item I am especially pleased about is my research into the location of William Tenant de Crofton(1296). Whilst I cannot prove any blood links to this William, his is the earliest Tennant record and from a time when the population size would not have been high. I am least pleased about the inconsistency of my software coding which suffers from the long periods of inactivity. Where I have used PDF files you may find that, depending upon your computer, the link does not display the file but downloads it and another click is required in the appropriate location.

My own name David was given to me because I was born almost on St.David's day. I live in Scotland because of my job, having been born in Lancashire. I state these facts as a reminder - Don't jump to conclusions!

Information is recorded in chapters as detailed in the Index, starting with Pierce Tennant of Aghade, my grandfathers grandfather and some of his descendants. Next is a chapter going back from Pierce to his probable grandparents. The Carlow to Lanark section is derived from the book of that name (used C2L as shorthand) by R.D.Tennant a Canadian who researched the Thomas Tennant who emigrated from Co.Carlow to Lanark, Canada. The next section gives information about Aghade in Co.Carlow and the Butler family connection.

The summary set-out to be a simple way of looking up names but has got out of hand. I considered deleting but did not as it may help someone.

On the index page there are diamonds alongside each line. Double click or tap on the one for Pierce. This will take you to a page devoted to Pierce Tennant where you will see a list of his children. William is underlined, indicating that this is a click-able link to another page. On the page for William you will find there are several links including one to Richard (1864). From Richard you will see links to Ciss & Harry Anything underlined is a link to more information. Where every consecutive line would require to be underlined, as in the Index, I have used a diamond to make it easier to read. At the bottom of most pages I have a link to return to the primary index though you might find it easier to click the web "Back" icon if you want to go back only a page or two. Top right I have started putting the file name and the revision date.

A simple tip: do not try to remember the web address, just do a Google on "Pierce Tennant". Enjoy.

David Tennant
