For the past 24 years I have collected information about my ancestors to share with my family. My endeavors started in small steps, but when I linked my family to the Acadians, it took off in leaps and bounds. When I began my research, I was unaware how deep my Acadian roots were, and surprised to find out that my fathers family was as much Acadian as my mothers. The more I learned, the more I hungered for. My few books on Acadian history eventually led me to my local library where I stumbled across my first Genealogy Research Center. The excitement I felt the first time I ran across a family name in the Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records will never leave me. Of course, at the time, the names of the people in those volumes were foreign to me. I photocopied several pages and went home to sort it all out. That is when my passion ended and myobsession started. I eventually started purchasing my own copies of the DBRCCR and the Archdiocese of New OrleansSacramental Records, along with any other books I thought would be helpful in my research. It soon became a joke in my family that 'mom is busy looking for dead people'. My research eventually took me to visit the places some of my ancestors lived and to meet relatives I had never known existed until now. As I add my research to this site, please keep in mind that I amonly human, so mistakes may occur. Please treat the information on this webpage as a guide to your own research. As new information or documents are discovered, changes will be made. Should you need additional information or would like to contribute information on these families, please contact me at [email protected].

ACADIA
ACADIA: A region in eastern Canada that became the site of the first permanent French colony in North America. French colonists started settling there in 1604. The French explorer, Sieur de Monts founded the original settlement in Acadia. Acadia remained a French settlement until the early 1700's, when it became involved in the struggle for control of North America between France and England. During Queen Anne's War (1702-1713), Port Royal, the seat of the Acadian government, surrendered to the British. The Treaty of Utrecht, which ended the war, gave Acadia to Britain. A dispute arose, however, when France only ceded what is now mainland Nova Scotia. The other parts of Acadia tried to remain neutral in the dispute. In 1755, during the French and Indian War, British officials tried to force the Acadians to take an oath of allegiance to the British king, but the Acadians refused to do so. Between 1755 and 1763 about 10,000 men, women, and children were forced to move to colonies farther south. Of these, about 4,000 Acadians went to Louisiana, a former French colony. Descendants of these Acadians are known as Cajuns.
In an expedition led by Jean de Biencourt de Poutrincourtin 1610, Claude de Sainte-tienne de laTour, a French Huguenot nobleman of the House of Bouillon, originally from Champagne, France, and his 14 year oldson, Charles, b. 1596 in Champagne, came to Port-Royal. Biencourt, lieutenant-governor of Acadia, left Acadiato return to Francein 1615 and was succeeded by his son, Charles de Biencourt de Saint-Just. Charles de Biencourt died in 1623 and was then succeeded by Charles la Tour.
Charles la Tour took a Mi'kmaw princess for a wife about 1626 and had at least three daughters and possibly one son with her. In 1631he had become governor of Acadia and moved to the mouth of the St. John River where he built a new fort. In 1632, Isaac de Razilly, the new Lieutenant-general of all New France and governor of Acadia, arrived in Port-Royal. La Tourand Razilly agreed to divide control of Acadia. Razilly died in 1635, and his successor, Charles de Menou d'Aulnay, and Charles la Tourbegan a series of violent confrontations. La Tour expropriated a ship that d'Aulnay had dispatched to Maine. During these confrontations, Charles la Tourwas accused of treason and crimes against Acadia. The Court of France revoked the commission that la Tour had held and named d'Aulnay Governor and Lieutenant-General of the entire coast of Acadia from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Virginia.
In 1645, while Charles la Tour was in Boston seeking reinforcements, d'Aulnay attacked his fort. Charles' second wife, Francoise Marie Jacquelin, a Huguenot ladyof Nogent-le-Rotrou, France whom he married in 1640, defended the fort for three days, but on April 17th, d'Aulnay took control of the fort, capturing and hanging many of la Tour's men to serve as an example. His wife was forced to watch the hangings. She was taken prisoner anddied three months later.
Upon the unexpected death of d'Aulnay in 1650, la Tour went to France, was exonerated of his piractic acts and crimes of rebellion and was named Governor of Acadia in letters issued by Louis XIV in February 1651. Armed with these letters, la Tour picked as his Lieutenant, Philippe Mius, Squire de Landremont, of Cherbourg. Hehired a number of men, and sailed for Acadia1.
During the English Occupation (1654-1667), la Tour's fort was seized. As a result, no new French families came to Acadia between 1654 and 1670. After it's return to French control, colonists left LaRochelle aboard the l'Oranger and others arrived from New France.
ALL ACADIANS ARE RELATED...
I have read this countless times, so I decided to see just how many I was related to. Of the 69 families listed on the 1671 Census of Port Royal, Pobomcoup, Cape Neigre, and Riviere Aux Rochelois, I have so far linked62 of them to my families.
MIUS D'ENTREMONT LINE:
Philippe Mius, his wife, Madeleine Hlie du Tillet, and a daughter, Marie Marguerite, boarded a ship at La Rochelle, France, destined for Acadia with governor Charles de Saint-Etienne de la Tour in 1651. Granted a barony by la Tour in1653 in recognition of hisstatus, Philippe became known as Baron de Pobomcoup. Pobomcoup is present day Pubnico.
In 1670, Philippe was appointed the King's Attorney General in Acadia. The Baron was forced from his barony following an attack by a band of Dutchmen in 1675, which is why in 1678, he is found with his family at Port-Royal. In 1688, Philippe Mius d'Entremont retired to Grand-Pr, where he died in 1699. Philippe's eldest son, Jacques, took over the Barony. Those exiled from Pobomcoup when the British expelled the Acadians during the Deportations of 1755 and 1758 returned years later in 1766 to resettle the village. The d'Entremont family was dispersedto France and Massachusetts, but the remainder of the family came back from exile. The Barony of Pobomcoup was burned to the ground by the English on September 23, 1758, led by Major Roger Morris with his troops. According to Clarence D'Entremont, documents state that 'by 11 o'clock on that doomed Saturday, Pobomcoup existed no more'. Pubnico was settled for a second time and is recognized as being the oldest Acadian village still inhabited by descendants of its founding families3.

THE SECOND GENERATION
PIERRE MELANSON, Sieur de laVerdureand his brothers, CHARLES MELANSON dit La Rame, born. 1643, and John Laverdure arrived in Port Royal in 1657 accompanied by their parents onboard the vessel Satisfaction with Sir Thomas Temple, the English Governor of Acadia. He founded the Grand-Pre settlement on Minas Basin, where PHILIPPE MIUS d'ENTREMONT spent his final days. Pierre and Charles were the sons of Pierre Laverdure, a French Protestant born abt. 1600-1605 and died abt. 1677, and Priscilla <Unnamed>, an Englishwoman born abt. 1610 and died abt. 1691 in Boston. It is believed that Pierre Laverdure left France during the fall of La Rochelle in 1628 andwent to England where he met and married Priscilla around 1630-31. There is no confirmed reason why two of the sons of this couple chose to use the surname Melanson, and the other Laverdure. Some speculate that Melanson was Priscilla's surname, but no documents have been found to support this. It is also possible that Laverdure was a title as opposed to asurname. In any event, it is well documented in Acadia that Pierre and Charles used Melanson as their surname, along with their titles of Sieur de la Verdure and dit La Rame, and that Pierre, Priscilla and their brother John used Laverdure astheir surname in Boston.
