Dedicated to Bert at one time a Royal Gloucestershire Hussar & my Auntie Mabel “Tulip” to whom  the letter “Somewhere in France” was addressed to.

Bert

Almazena Mabel “Tulip” with her parents Henry & Minnie Williams, taken 1915 approx at Reservoir Rd, Gloucester

Can you help with more details about him

At the present time last known alive on 4th May 1918 as per letter “Somewhere in France”, is he at the Somme (a play on words Some & Somme).  My father who was born 13 years after his sister Mabel cannot recall Bert’s full name but is sure that he died in the last month or months of the 1st world war.  A similar picture hung for many years on the wall of my fathers parents residence at Reservoir Road and Finlay Rd, Gloucester.

The transcribed letter reads

“Somewhere in France”

4th May -18

My Dear Tulip

At last I am writing you a short letter, you must please excuse me keeping you waiting so long for a reply, but really those “Bally Germans” are very tiresome, they would not let me write to you, so we have been getting our own back and worrying them somewhat.

I believe you will be 10 years old on Sunday, I am afraid I shall be rather late with my “Good Wishes” but they are “right there” all the same my old sweetheart.  Tell “Mam” I recd her letter of the 30th O.K. and I hope she is quite well again, also tell Dad to be careful where he is putting his fingers, I’m sorry to hear he has smashed one.

So the weathers still fine my old dear ? we are having plenty of rain as usual, but it soon dries up when the sun comes out.

How are you getting along with the Music.  Can you play Home Sweet Home!! Backwards yet, and what about the Rabbits have you got any more ? Oh! You have lots to tell me in your next letter.

Now don’t you think I’ve been a good boy to write you all this I reckon I deserve three Bags full of Kisses when I come home again for this, now please give my love to all, I am quite well thanks, hoping this will find you all the same I must now wish you Au Revoir with Lots of Love and kisses from

Bert to my Old Sweetheart

Tulip

This booklet and photos has kindly been made available by Alan Price and relate to his grandfather, Private 3400 / 235821 Edward Colston PRICE, 1892 – 1982, 1/1st Royal Gloucestershire Hussars (Yeomanry) and where he served.  It covers the period January 1917 to December 1917.

A precise overseas date for Edward Colston PRICE has not yet been established, however the best estimate, from his service number, is that he was sent as reinforcement from the 2/1st to the 1/1st RGHY and had joined the latter by early 1917.

During 1917 the R.G.H.Y. served as part of the 5th Mounted Brigade under Lieutenant General Sir Philip W. Chetwode. 5th Mounted Brigade in turn was part of The Australian Mounted Division.

The 5th Mounted Brigade comprised of 1/1st Warwickshire Yeomanry, 1/1st Gloucester Yeomanry, 1/1st Worcester Yeomanry, 5th Mounted Brigade Signal Troop and the 16th Machine Gun Division. Formerly The South Midland Mounted Brigade.

Indications are that E.C. Price served in D squadron (made up by men from Bristol area) in Sergeant Bromhead's DCM troop, under Major Algar H. S. Howard of Thornbury.
