The Eelman-family
The surname Eelman is one of the oldest Texel-names. Nowadays the telephone directory gives over the 70 entries for Eelman in Texel, although at least 46 members of the family emigrated in the period 1850-1920. The roots of this mennonite family are situated near the village De Waal, where the first Eelman's were farmers.
There was also a Roman Catholic family with the same surname in Texel, starting with the pilot Jacob Jansz Eelman (born around 1665). According to the book "Texelse geslachten" this family in Oudeschild is related to the mennonite family Eelman, but unfortunately their is no specific information available about the relationship between the two branches of the Eelman family.

I Jan Hendriksz Eelman lived in De Waal. According to a list made for taxes purposes, his household counted three people in 1622. He died 26-4-1642.

Pietertgen Pieters. Pietertgen was first married to Arijs Jacobs. They lived in De Waal, and according to a list made for taxes purposes, Hendrik Eelman owned f2000,- in 1621.
IIb Jacob Jansz Eelman, son of Jan Hendriksz Eelman, died 30-1-1665, according to the membership book of the Dutch Reformed Church of Oosterend. He lived in Harkebuurt.

Jacob and Antje got three children, but only one of them stayed alive. The family lived on a farm near Den Burg. Unfortunately Antje Blauw died in 1829. The servant Wijntje Boon now managed the household, and looked after the little boy Jan. After a while Jacob Eelman decided to marry his servant, and together they got another eight children. A lot of the descendants of Jacob Jacobs Eelman emigrated.

It was a wealthy family. Jan Arisz Eelman owned a couple of farms. Most of the time he was living with his family on a farm in Ongeren, a hamlet in Texel, near Den Burg. In the old days this farm probably had no name. From 1904 on, it was called "Cervantes", and in 1987 it was changed in "J.F. Kennedijhoeve". Unfortunately the recent name is misspelled. The address is nowadays Ongeren 9.

In 1866 they emigrated to Michigan. Aris went first in March, and his wife followed with the children in August. She arrived with the "Allemannia" on the 3th of September 1866 in the USA. According to the "Staat van landverhuizers" they were well-to-do. In Texel Aris was a cattle farmer, and the Ottawa County Michigan Index of 1892-93 is also listing him as a farmer. Aris Eelman died in 1905 and was buried on the North Holland Cemetery in Michigan, and so was his wife Tetje in 1910. The same cemetery became also the final resting-place of their son Willem Eelman (1860-1931) and his wife Hendrika (1857-1943).

Pieter and Aris traveled together to the USA in 1887, at the age of 21 and 16. Pieter married and got at least one child named Gerrit John. Aris traveled in 1908 to the Netherlands, and on the way back home his future wife Marie Boon joined him. Although she had four brothers in the USA, Marie Boon became homesick. Around 1913 Aris and his family came back to the Netherlands. The oldest sibling Marretje lived in Passaic from 1888-1911, probably with her first husband Jan Jansz Bakker. She came back to the Netherlands and lived in IJmuiden, untill she remarried Klaas Pietersz Boon. Together they arrived in 1923 in New York on board of the "Veendam".
