FREE ONLINE BIRTH INDEXES AND RECORDS FOR ITALY
This page is a partial listing of free online resources for finding birth and baptism records for Italy. Some of these databases are transcriptions by private individuals who have placed the information on their own free webpages. But most of the resources listed below are Mormon (LDS) Family History webpages which, allow visitors to view and download registration records or certificates for free. If the records themselves are not online, you will need to order copies of birth registrations from the government records offices, or inexpensive photocopies or free scans from the Mormons if the records have been filmed by them, but not yet placed online.
Many genealogy societies as well as governments and other organizations and groups are in the process of digitizing vital records, and their online databases are incomplete. That is because, rather than wait until all records have been indexed, they put the records indexed thus far online. So if you do not find what you want to find at a particular site, do check back periodically to see if the records you are interested in have been added to the database.
Orders of records from private genealogy and vital records services usually cost significantly more money than the government as they charge additional processing fees. So, if you need official copies of birth records, be sure to order them direct from the local records offices. For more helpful information about doing this, see David Zerga's example letters to send to Italy as well as the introductory sites shown below on this page in the section about basic Italian genealogy.
Some of the websites shown below also allow you to search for marriages and deaths as well, but this page will only discuss birth indices, birth certificates, and baptismal records.

You may want to also search the Rootsweb Mailing Lists Archiver to see if anyone has transcribed newspaper birth announcements for the area you are interested in.

If you need assistance understanding the records in Latin or Italian, there are many webpages devoted to terms used in Italian genealogical documents. However, they may not have all the terms you will need to know, so make sure you take advantage of translation engines such as Babelfish and Google for definitions of those words. We also strongly recommend that you join one or more forums or mailing lists for the area or areas of Italy where your ancestors came from, or a general Italian mailing list. Even if you choose to lurk and never post or answer any queries, it is a convenient way to learn about available resources. Hunting for birth records in a country such as Italy where record keeping is done locally rather than nationally, is very hard to do unless you know where, in Italy, your ancestors came from. Knowing what region, province, town or village they came from can make searching much easier for you. If you know the province, but do not know the region, or know the city, town or village and do not know the province, Wikipedia usually has excellent pages that can provide this information from you, and the postal codes site below may also be of assistance. About Family Search's Collections for Italy
Although they have indexed some of their collections for Italy, FamilySearch also has many collections for Italy which contain images for browsing and have not been indexed for searching by name. Unfortunately, that means that to easily take the most advantage of these databases, you need to either know their religion, or know where your ancestors came from at the state level, and preferably the provincia as well, because many records were reported at a higher level of government than the town. Some collections are just for one religion or town (Comune), those collection labeled "Tribunale" contain records for the tribunal court or county level and can include towns within a number of provinces, and there also are collections at the State level.
If you do not want to have to browse these dozens of collections and have no idea what area in Italy your ancestors came from, you might want to read the section about finding ancestral towns on our page about finding your ancestors.
Note that FamilySearch usually provides a range of years as part of the name of the collection, but the full ranges are usually just for marriage and death records. While there are exceptions that we have noted in the descriptions of the Family Search collections, in most cases, you will only find births through 90-100 years ago, with more recent records being unavailable to protect the privacy of those people listed who are still alive.

NEWS FLASH!! January 2014 - FamilySearch has added at least ten more databases containing births and baptisms that we have not verified for listing below as free collections containing births or baptisms in Italy. So, be sure to check out their recent additions in the FamilySearch Menu for Italy if you do not find the records you need in the specific databases listed below on this page. Their menu is organized by town and state within Italy so, if you know the region (such as Sicily or Veneto) but do not know exactly where your family came from within that region, check back here in a few weeks for a more up to date listing of their collections by region.
The resources listed below for Italy have been organized by region to make searching easier, for those of you who only know the region in Italy that your ancestors came from, but not the town or province. If you just know your ancestral religion, or the town or province, you can try using Control-F or Apple-F to find specific religions, or towns, provinces and regions of interest mentioned in the descriptions below, or read the pages recommended above in the section about basic Italian Genealogy, to learn more about the towns, provinces and regions of Italy. But also be sure to check the national and multi-regional webpages that we have included in the first section below.

We prefer to not make you do a lot of surfing, but there is such a wealth of transcribed data that we have not been able to evaluate for listing here, that we are giving you these links if you want to do some exploring. After the listings for these first two sites, you will find we have provided annotated links below to dozens of webpages that definitely contain birth and baptismal extracts and records for Italy.
ItalyGen is Daniela Massolo's site that has many free Italian Vital Records transcriptions, and also has many excellent links to free transcriptions on other sites. A wonderful site to explore and learn and find records. Scroll down to the section called "Projects grouped by Italian regions." Page also has Spanish and Italian versions.

Sersale.org lists both free and paid websites that have Civil Records of Various Italian Comunes, as well as email addresses of people who have transcribed records which are not online. Italy: Births and Baptisms. Family Search has a searchable index of nearly two million extracts of selected births and baptisms for 1806-1900. This collection is based on the International Genealogical Index (IGI).

Catholic Church Records: The LDS site had one collection of images including baptisms in Altofonte, Balestrata, Bisacquino, Campofiorito, Camporeale, and Rocca Monreale in the Montreale Diocese, Palermo Province, as well as the provinces of Catania, Treviso and Vicenza. Records were for as early as 1530 and as recent as 1919, and browsable images which have not been indexed for searching but this collection has disappeared and the records seem to have been absorbed into other specific regional collections in Veneto and Sicilia.

FamilySearch has browsable images of various Waldensian Evangelical Church Records in the provinces of Genova and Torino, Italy from about 1632 onwards, including births and baptisms (Nascite e battesimi). Ragusa Province
Italy, Ragusa, Modica, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1942. Browsable images including civil birth registrations from Ispica, Modica, Pozzallo and Scicli. When we surveyed this collection in June 2013, we only found birth and supplemental birth records for 1900-1912, and years of coverage within that range varied by town. Free registration so you can sign in on the LDS site is required to view images in this collection.

Besides reviewing the listings below, be sure to also search the national and multi-regional sites listed above, which have many more births and baptisms for all over Italy.
Italy, Toscana, Civil Registration (State Archive), 1745-1900. Searchable name index along with browsable images of birth registrations. Not all towns in all these Provinces have births listed at this point, but provinces included in the collection with at least some births in each include Arezzo, Cesena, Firenze, Grosseto, La Spezia, Livorno, Lucca, Massa e Carrara, Perugia, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato, Ravenna, and Siena. The most recent births (nati) that we found in this collection were for 1865. although you might find something more recent. The year 1900 in the official name of the collection seems to be primarily for other record types. You will need to sign in to view images and search results.

UMBRIA
We have only found one birth collections specifically for births in Umbria, so also try searching the Toscana Civil Registration collection discussed above, which contains some records from Umbria that are located at the State Archive in Firenze.
Italy, Perugia, Perugia, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1861-1929. Browse images of civil registrations of births from towns in the province of Perugia, but also from Monte Santa Maria Tiberina in Arezzo Province. Years of coverage for births tends to be between the years 1866 and 1910, and varies widely by town. Be sure to look through the allegati vari if you find no births (nati) in the drill down menu for your town.

Collection includes baptisms from the Parrocchia di San Giovanni Battista in Bessica, in Treviso Province, for 1650-1671 and, from Vicenza Province, for the Parrocchia di San Rocco in Casoni, for 1604-1937, and for the Parrocchia di Purificazione di Maria Vergine in Romano d'Ezzelino for 1741-1788.
