Joseph
Edward McFern was married in the Anglican Church on Amherst Island in
1879 He married Rose Jane
McCormick. Joseph was a carpenter. He lived and died on Amherst
Island. He lived the latter part of his life on the Glenn farm which
belonged to his son-in-law, Thomas Alexander(Bert) Glenn. I believe there are
Glenns still living on Amherst Island. Further investigation with the Anglican Church on Amherst Island has confirmed that Joseph Edward would have come directly from Ireland, but his 8 children were all born and raised on Amherst Island. Joseph & Rose had 8 children, all born and raised on Amherst Island. Hugh McFern was one of those children and Lynnes grandfather. Hugh married Lily Dennis. Hugh was lucky to come back alive from the war. Hugh witnessed his brother Thomas's death in the trenches of WW1. After the war, Hugh came to Quebec and had three children, William, Thomas and Vina. They all remember spending wonderful summer vacations at the Glen Farm with their grandfather, Joseph Edward. My dad used to tell us stories about having to haul in water from the well in buckets which were kept in the pantry. There was no running water back then in the farmhouse. Click on photo for larger version. Hugh and Lily, 1 year after the war. List of the fallen for WWI. You can see his name on the right side column. William McFern (b. 1880), son of Joseph Edward McFern & Rose Jane McCormick. We presume he died at an early age as my Aunt does not recall him. Mary Ethel McFern (b. 1882) as found on her birth certificate. Other Children of Joseph and Rose; Robert James, Lillian, Ellen Inez, Josephine Edna Notes Lynne believes Joseph came from either Londonderry or Antrim County in Northern Ireland. Proof of this would be most welcome! Should anyone have any further info on Joseph and his parents please email. Also see the McFern family, with more dates etc on the Island Connected Tree. |
