St. Philomena's Cemetery Tombstones
Howe Island

Taken 2000. Main road is at bottom of photo.

Photos taken 2000 and July 8 2003 by Jen Wylie.
over 200 photos taken at the cemetery; 208 identified tombstones (some with multiple sides and photos), 1 unidentified tombstone, 7 of the general layout.

Location:
Lot 15, South Range. Is located behind St. Philomena's Church on Howe Island Drive. Go straight off of the north ferry and follow the road (it turns), will be on the left hand side. Coming from the Gananoque side ferry go straight, it will be on your right.

There is a fence at the front, however the gates were not locked and there was no trouble getting in. The cemetery is at the back of the church.

The cemetery itself was well cared for, both times I've been there Tim Prior was mowing the grass. Most of the stones are in good condition. There are a few leaning against other stones.

There are woods to the north of the cemetery (supposedly they are indian graves back here... but no one who has mentioned them to me has found them.) There is a tree lined fence to the west and a few bushes along the fence to the east. The oldest part of the cemetery appears to be the west side.

Thank yous to Fern Small and Ken Collins for their transcriptions in 1975, as I referred to this book occasionally when stones were hard to read. I did find some errors in their transcriptions. Some transcriptions I could not find stones for, they are likely the transcriptions of the badly broken and faded stones.

If Ive made any errors in transcription please drop me an email to let me know. Please feel free to send in any photos of stones that arent here. Go ahead and download to your computer any of these photos for personal use.

General Set up of Cemetery

I didn't do a plot map, however between the photo above and the following hopefully you can get a general idea of the cemetery layout, and perhaps even locate your family stones. Click on the below photos for larger versions.
