THE ISLANDS NEWSLETTER

December 2, 2004What's new at The Islands website!
Greeting from the Webmaster
Hello everyone!

I hope everyone is surviving the colder weather, we got a dump of snow yesterday--quite the winter wonderland here! So... christmas is coming!Christmas (etc) is often a time of family gatherings. These are great times to talk to older family members about their past, gaining stories and perhaps clues for your research. Don't forget to ask about old documents and photos, a lot of older relatives don't know that you are interested in old land records, bibles, old obituraries and articles saved in the past, school records, wills and so forth. In my own family I've had great aunts get quite excited than I am interested in this sort of thing and that they have someone to pass their history on too so it won't be thrown away.

Thanks so much for everyone who submitted tidbits and goodies after the last newsletter! Please keep them coming!
Many thanks to Peter Rogers and Jerry Vaugn for helping me keep up to speed by transcribing a number of the scans you're sending in.
Also a HUGE thank you to Gerald Stevenson for donating to the site a copy of Catherine Wilsons "A New Lease on Life"!! I am now doing lookups (Amherst Island families)-so drop me an email. Ms Wilson has also allowed that the surnames found in the book to be put online (due to copyright nothing else though) this will be done as soon as I have the time to go through the book and collect them all.

A Few Notes...

New Simcoe Island Obituary Page!

The obituary section of the site now has a page set aside for obituaries of Simcoe Islanders. Please send your in! (Please make a note what island the obit is for, as sometimes it isn't mentioned in the actual obituary.)

Please Support This Site!

Please help support this site! This site grows by the kind submissions of researchers and those interested in preserving their history. Please send in scans of old photos and documents, transcriptions of certificates, obituaries, bibles etc. There is a spot for EVERYTHING on this site, and if there isn't I will make one. Please contact me if you don't have a scanner and would like to mail COPIES of photos or documents for me to scan and/or transcribe. (They will not be returned and you must cover postage costs)
Please help out by sending in anything island related, even if it isn't for your family! Mystery photos are most welcome! Please email me if you would like to help the site grow! Credit will be given to the submitter.

This site now has over 697 pages up from 676 pages on Sept 21.

This Newsletter has 116 subscribers (same as last newsletter)!!

If you would like to submit a "BRICK WALL" problem to the newsletter please email me with "Newsletter Brick Wall" in the subject line.

Chris is still working on transcribing the 1861 Wolfe Island census. She is only doing headings Name, birthplace, religion, age, occupation as this is to be used as a guide.

Diaries of Irene Dixon Bamford are being transcribed...this will be a long process as there is something like 35 YEARS worth! The first diary is 1887 and is in progress.
Also coming soon are Mr. Bamford log diarys 1911-1912.

Thanks to Thelma Moye for submitting these diaries!

I am still trying to sort out Amherst Island schools- if anyone can help please email me.

Working Together
The Islands site is built and grows through the efforts of those who use it. I do what I can to add new information, but I am only one person. Please consider submitting information, photos or anything else you have to add to this site. Credit will be given to the submitter.
Submissions are greatly needed for Amherst Island. Surf the pages to see what IS there.
