THE ISLANDS NEWSLETTER

Novemeber 3, 2004What's new at The Islands website!
Greeting from the Webmaster
Hello everyone!

I hope everyone had a happy and safe Hallowe'en. To all of the Americans on the list, wishing you a happy upcmoing Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is often a time of family gatherings. These are great times to talk to older family members about their past, gaining stories and perhaps clues for your research. Don't forget to ask about old documents and photos, a lot of older relatives don't know that you are interested in old land records, bibles, old obituraries and articles saved in the past, school records, wills and so forth. In my own family I've had great aunts get quite excited than I am interested in this sort of thing and that they have someone to pass their history on too so it won't be thrown away.

The long winter is creeping up on us, my area is calling for snow within the week. Great weather to go through files or head out to the local Family history center or library. There are still many sources that need to be transcribed from FHC or libraries, every little bit helps!. These include mainly census, birth, marriage and death civil registrations. Also if you're combing through old papers, please keep an eye out for obits, marriage announcements that are island related and jot them down to submit to the site-even if they are not your family! Please include name of paper and date.
Please contact me about submission details.

A Few Notes...

Help needed...

Many thanks to Jerry Vaughn and Peter Rogers for transcribing over 100 obituary images on the site so they are now searchable!
*I am still looking for persons to do lookups/transcriptions at various libraries etc in Kingston (or an area that has resources for the island) for island related material to add to the site.

This site now has over 692 pages up from 676 pages on Sept 21.

This Newsletter has 116 subscribers (up from 114 at last newsletter)!!

If you would like to submit a "BRICK WALL" problem to the newsletter please email me with "Newsletter Brick Wall" in the subject line.

Coming Soon!
Chris is currently transcribing the 1861 Wolfe Island census. She is only doing headings Name, birthplace, religion, age, occupation as this is to be used as a guide.

More William Dixon poems/lyrics will be added soon-they are currently being transcribed.

Diaries of Irene Dixon Bamford are being transcribed...this will be a long process as there is something like 35 YEARS worth! The first diary is 1887 and is in progress.
Also coming soon are Mr. Bamford log diarys 1911-1912.

Thanks to Thelma Moye for submitting these diaries!

Working Together
The Islands site is built and grows through the efforts of those who use it. I do what I can to add new information, but I am only one person. Please consider submitting information, photos or anything else you have to add to this site. Credit will be given to the submitter.
Submissions are greatly needed for Amherst Island. Surf the pages to see what IS there.

EMAIL ME

If you would like to post anything to this newsletter please email me about it. I'd be happy to put little blurbs- either about family or if you would like to discuss an island topic or recount some island memories.

EVERYONE! Please don't forget to put the word 'ISLAND' somewhere in your subject line when you email me! I know I'm missing some of your emails because there is no subject line, or it is 'hi' or something similar and I delete it. I get A LOT of spam and don't take the time to check every email- I look at my subject lines. Thank you.

BRICK WALLS

Missing RATTRAYS of Wolfe Island.
I have many 'missing' Rattrays. After certain census they just disapear and I have been unable to track them down in 1881,1901 census online or in online USA census. It is unknown if they died, or for the women, who or if they married.
IF you can assist please email me!

Reuben Rattray b. 1835-in 1861 census then lost.

Philander Rattray b. 1848-in 1871 census then lost.

John Rattray b. 1850-missing after 1861 census

Mary Rattray b. 1853-missing after 1861 census

Also children of Hannah Rattray who m. Wm McFadden;

Margaret McFadden b 1850-missing after 1871

Selina McFadden b. 1854-missing after 1861

Elizabeth McFadden b. 1856-missing after 1871

Mary McFadden b. 1858-missing after 1871

James McFadden b. 1864-after 1881

Also looking for any documentation of FARRS being on Wolfe Island. I have them on 1860 Walling map E.R. Farr Con 16 lot 5 also Con 17 lot 5

Apparently they are in the missing part of the 1851 wolfe census.
