THE ISLANDS NEWSLETTER

September 21, 2004What's new at The Islands website!
Greeting from the Webmaster
Hello everyone!

It looks like Fall is coming upon us. Now is a great time to get back into family research now that the kiddies are back in school and the weather is getting cooler.
This past month has seen a lot of new submissions! Also a new section to the site MILITARY which includes one large submission of the Gallant Volunetters list.
Lots and lots of tombstone photos coming, particularly off island ones.

A Few Notes...

Home Children

It has been suggested that I devote a page to Home Children, apparently quite a few went to the islands. If you have any information on any Home Children please contact me, please put "Island Home Children" in the subject line. I am now collecting info to put on the site. If I get a few submissions then I will make up a page.
If you have an idea for a new page, or section to the site do email me! I do listen!! :)

New books digitized online! (OFFSITE!!)

I came across these 2 books IN FULL online today. THEY ARE NOT ON MY SITE, but I have links to them on the Written Word page under the BOOKS section.
Should you ever see other books that are about or mention the Islands or Islanders, please send me the link.
From OurRoots site-full books digitized!:
Tales of Amherst Island
By H.C. Burleigh, 1980

Wolfe Island Past and Present
By Winston Cosgrove 1973

Horne & Point Alexandria Cemetery

This cemetery has been fully photographed and is being put online now. I've linked its main page to the main cemetery page so that you can browse what is online already. All 222 identified stones are now online, as is the index.

Help needed...

*I'm looking for a person (or persons) to do some transcribing. I will send you scans in jpg or pdf (read with acrobat reader) of various materials to be transcribed and put on the site. Materials include obits, articles, diaries etc. I just don't have as much time as I used to (due to 2 kids) and am getting a growing pile of papers people have mailed me.
*I'm also looking for persons to do lookups/transcriptions at various libraries etc in Kingston for island related material to add to the site.

This site now has over 676 pages up from 630 pages on Aug 18.

This Newsletter has 114 subscribers (up from 109 at last newsletter)!!

FEATURE: Obituaries
The Island Obituaries Page is one section that is updated at least weekly.

First off I want to say to be sure to check out the offsite link at the top of the page. Janet Jones has over 132,000 ONTARIO obituaries, at no cost. I've found a few family members every time I've gone-make sure you have some time to look-the names are indexed put the pages can be slow loading.

Back to the Islands Obituaries...
Please email me with your transcriptions and or scanned images. If possible give date and source. If you send an image and have the time to transcribe it as well that would be great-it will save me time and it will get put online faster.

Yes I know the names aren't in any sort of order, but at least I have each page indexed for you. :)
The Transcription pages now also include obituary images if they have also been transcribed.
Working Together
The Islands site is built and grows through the efforts of those who use it. I do what I can to add new information, but I am only one person. Please consider submitting information, photos or anything else you have to add to this site. Credit will be given to the submitter.
Submissions are greatly needed for Amherst Island. Surf the pages to see what IS there.

EMAIL ME

If you would like to post anything to this newsletter please email me about it. I'd be happy to put little blurbs- either about family or if you would like to discuss an island topic or recount some island memories.

EVERYONE! Please don't forget to put the word 'ISLAND' somewhere in your subject line when you email me! I know I'm missing some of your emails because there is no subject line, or it is 'hi' or something similar and I delete it. I get A LOT of spam and don't take the time to check every email- I look at my subject lines. Thank you.
