THE ISLANDS NEWSLETTER

Aug 31, 2005What's new at The Islands website!
Greeting from the Webmaster
Hello everyone!

Hello everyone, I hope you are all enjoying your summer. It's hard to believe today is the end of August and summer is coming to an end! I've not had as much time to do updates this month, however submissions have been very slow so I'm mostly caught up anyways. :)

Last newsletter I mentioned people getting spamed with unsubscribe emails for this list. Some people are still getting them, if you are one of them please drop me a note so I can let the Bravenet people have an idea of how large the problem is.
PLEASE just DELETE those emails!

A Few Notes...

1911 Canadian Census IS released!

It is online in image form at the ontario archives. Also it is online at Automated genealogy and transcriptions are beginning.
Stop by for a look!

Please post your thoughts here!!

New Comments Board/Forum

Check out this page to post your comments, questions, thougths on THE SITE itself (not family information-see the other forum for that) Please use this board to let me know what you would like to see added to the site, census, vital records, obit, etc.

Volunteer:

If you would like to transcribe any of the 1911 census in full for the site please let me know. Automated genealogy is only transcribing select headings.

Still looking...
I'm looking for someone to complete the Wolfe Island 1861 census. Chris Morrell (who passed away suddenly in march) had completed and submited Ward 1. It is on the site. If you would be interested in finishing the census please contact me. This site now has over 811 pages up from 799 pages on July 20.
This Newsletter has 149 subscribers, up from 144 in July.

If you would like to submit a "BRICK WALL" problem to the newsletter please email me with "Newsletter Brick Wall" in the subject line.

Other comments, notes, articles are also welcome to be added to the newsletter.

Focus On...

Military

The Islands: Militaryl
Todays focus is on the Military section of the site. Go to the above link and check out this great area of the site. First of all check out the article posted on this main military page below the links on the Howe Island Year of the Veteran Project.
I am hoping this information when compiled will be added to the site (or put online elsewhere and then I can put a link)
The 3 sections...So far this part of the site is broken in Pre World Wars, World War 1 and World War 2

Pre World Wars
I'm always looking for new additions. If your island ancestor served in any pre WW etc please contact me with the details. Some areas included in this section: War of 1812, Militia, Civil War, RED RIVER EXPEDITIONARY FORCE 1870-1877 and the Boer War 1899-1902 . New headings are welcome! Please check out this section to see if you have anything to add- US pension files, rolls, mention on tombstone, articles etc.
Help out...Does anyone know for what war this was from?

The Death Roll
Hugh McLaren, a Wofe Island pioneer, aged 70 (?)

World War 1
Islanders involved in World War 1 1914-1918
A lot of people have sent in Attestation Papers, this is no longer necessary IF your ancestor is in the Soldiers of the First World War (1914-1918) Database from the Library & Archives Canada and their papers have been scanned and put online. PLEASE CHECK TO SEE IF YOU ANCESTORS ARE THERE! If so just email me the info by copy and pasting from the database ie send only: MATIER, William J., b. 2 Feb 1894, Kingston, Ont. (?), Reg# 30716
Please also send such info if you ancestor is in the Books of Remembrance ie MATIER, James Ernest, b. 3 May 1897, Wolfe Island. Ont. Reg#835820 d. 1918, Book of Remembrance, p. 469.
Please help out with this! It will only take a little time for you to help with the lists!
Pleas do let me know also of any memorials (here or overseas)
>BR> Also send along any old articles you may have, and I would really love to get more photos of islanders dressed in their WW1 uniforms.

World War 2
This part of the site needs more submissions. Please again let me know of ancestors in the Books of Remembrance. Otherwise the only other info on this part of the site are a number of articles. So anything is welcome!!

Thanks so much for your help!
Every contribution makes a difference and helps this site grow!!
Working Together
The Islands site is built and grows through the efforts of those who use it. I do what I can to add new information, but I am only one person. Please consider submitting information, photos or anything else you have to add to this site. Credit will be given to the submitter.
Submissions are greatly needed for Amherst Island. Surf the pages to see what IS there.

Have a Question?
Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have about the Island page.

EMAIL ME

If you would like to post anything to this newsletter please email me about it. I'd be happy to put little blurbs- either about family or if you would like to discuss an island topic or recount some island memories.

EVERYONE! Please don't forget to put the word 'ISLAND' somewhere in your subject line when you email me! I know I'm missing some of your emails because there is no subject line, or it is 'hi' or something similar and I delete it. I get A LOT of spam and don't take the time to check every email- I look at my subject lines. Thank you.

BRICKWALL

Please email me with your Brick Wall questions!!

COMING VERY SOON!

-Wolfe Island school information is coming in at a steady pace thanks to AM Benson, Theresa Broeders and the Wolfe Island Womens Institute. I am putting the information online as quickly as possible.
PLease email if you have old photos to share!
(I now have a new option where you can upload your photos to a photocenter and I can download them from there-this saves the bother of bounced emails--ask me about it if you are interested.)
COPIES of articles and photos can also be post mailed to me for me to transcribe/scan to add to the site. Contact me for details.

Visiting an Island this summer?
Be sure to take your camera and snap photos of any old buildings (schools, churches, barns, houses etc) to send to the site. I'm also looking for tombstone photos and transcriptions for Amherst Island-check out the site to see what is there.
If visiting relatives make copies of any interesting documents, everything is welcome on the site-please remember we are trying to document, save and preserve the genealogy and history of the islands. Thanks to all for their help!!
