THE ISLANDS NEWSLETTER

July 20, 2005What's new at The Islands website!
Greeting from the Webmaster
Hello everyone!

Hello everyone, I hope you are all enjoying your summer. I've been quite busy with family and summer things, so updates have not been as frequent as in the winter, but there has still been a lot added in the last month. Do keep those submissions coming in!

Last newsletter I mentioned people getting spamed with unsubscribe emails for this list. Some people are still getting them, if you are one of them please drop me a note so I can let the Bravenet people have an idea of how large the problem is.
PLEASE just DELETE those emails!

A Few Notes...

1911 Canadian Census soon to be released!

From the Global Gazette:
"Bill S-18 has now passed all necessary stages in both the Senate and the House of Commons. " Read more... (offsite)
The bill now has Royal Assent and is hoped the census will be available by August. It appears that Automated Genealogy will be indexing this census as well (as it did for the 1901).

I'll make a note on the main island page when the census comes online, as well as a mention if automated genealogy will be transcribing. I encourage people to transcribe for automated genealogy index or to transcribe the full census for the ontario genweb census project. If you do please drop me a note so I can make a mention of it.

Please post your thoughts here!!

Focus On...

Map & Directories

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~theislands/directories/maindir.html
This section of the site deals with directories, maps, tenant maps etc. These are great ways to assist with finding out where your ancestors were in certain years and also what occupations they had.

There are many different types of directories on the site, Patron, Farmers, Business that can be very helpful.

Be sure to see the new Offsite Directories section on this page for a link to many many online directories for the islands.

The Tenant map section of the site is very popular, with maps of the islands and the names of who lived where written on them. I have many of these maps, so feel free to contact me if you see one of your names and I can scan the area in question (if it's not already online).

If you know of any other maps or directories please send me the information- links for those online, reference for those in book form. Or you may send a transcription to add.

I personally found these maps and directories very helpful in tracing my early wolfe island families, especially considering the 1851 census for that island is incomplete, and of course my one family was in that missing section (though the husband appeared in the agr census-which can show how they can be important as well!)

Working Together
The Islands site is built and grows through the efforts of those who use it. I do what I can to add new information, but I am only one person. Please consider submitting information, photos or anything else you have to add to this site. Credit will be given to the submitter.
Submissions are greatly needed for Amherst Island. Surf the pages to see what IS there.

Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have about the Island page.

EMAIL ME

If you would like to post anything to this newsletter please email me about it. I'd be happy to put little blurbs- either about family or if you would like to discuss an island topic or recount some island memories.

EVERYONE! Please don't forget to put the word 'ISLAND' somewhere in your subject line when you email me! I know I'm missing some of your emails because there is no subject line, or it is 'hi' or something similar and I delete it. I get A LOT of spam and don't take the time to check every email- I look at my subject lines. Thank you.

BRICKWALL

Please email me with your Brick Wall questions!!

COMING VERY SOON!

-Wolfe Island school information is coming in at a steady pace thanks to AM Benson, Theresa Broeders and the Wolfe Island Womens Institute. I am putting the information online as quickly as possible.
PLease email if you have old photos to share!
(I now have a new option where you can upload your photos to a photocenter and I can download them from there-this saves the bother of bounced emails--ask me about it if you are interested.)
COPIES of articles and photos can also be post mailed to me for me to transcribe/scan to add to the site. Contact me for details.

Visiting an Island this summer?
Be sure to take your camera and snap photos of any old buildings (schools, churches, barns, houses etc) to send to the site. I'm also looking for tombstone photos and transcriptions for Amherst Island-check out the site to see what is there.
If visiting relatives make copies of any interesting documents, everything is welcome on the site-please remember we are trying to document, save and preserve the genealogy and history of the islands. Thanks to all for their help!!
