THE ISLANDS NEWSLETTER

May 20, 2005What's new at The Islands website!
Greeting from the Webmaster
Hello everyone!

Wishing everyone a happy May 24 weekend (and to our US friends happy memorial day weekend next week!)
Summer is on its way, along with some nice weather! Updates to the tree will be slowly down slightly, as me and the boys will be spending more time outside. There will still be updates at least weekly though.

A Few Notes...

Island Tree again up and running!

The Islands Connected tree has been adopted by Pat McAvoy-Costin! It was last updated March 9th before Chris passed away so suddenly. If you sent anything to Chris that is not on the tree please email Pat. Unfortunetly we have none of Chris' notes or files. See the Islands Connected Tree button the side bar for more information.

Please post your thoughts here!!

If anyone would be interested in transcribing old diaries (Irene Bamfords-wolfe Island) please email me.
The diaries would be scanned and put on an online photo site where you could then download them.
There are lots of diaries so all help appreciated! Also we have recipies, patterns etc to be transcribed if you would prefer something smaller to try out.

Focus On...

Government

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~theislands/government/maingov.html
The government page deals with a number of related topics.
The first section is on government officials, reeves, mayors, wardens, council member etc. This area is not complete so if you have information to add please contact me.
One great resource in this section is the online book by Mable McRae; Township of Frontenac Islands Reeves and Councilpersons 1850-1997

The next part of this section of the site is Assessment Rolls. Unfortunetly I don't have much in this section. If you have any information you could transcribe to add to the site, or if you are willing to go out and transcribe some that would be great.

The last part is municiple records. It deals with minutes concerning everything from road work to schools to fence viewers.
For some neat information check out the offsite link at the bottom of the page to Orders in Council. Use the island names to search.
There are a lot of great links (offsite) at the bottom of the government page. Be sure to check them out!

Working Together
The Islands site is built and grows through the efforts of those who use it. I do what I can to add new information, but I am only one person. Please consider submitting information, photos or anything else you have to add to this site. Credit will be given to the submitter.
Submissions are greatly needed for Amherst Island. Surf the pages to see what IS there.

Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have about the Island page.

EMAIL ME

If you would like to post anything to this newsletter please email me about it. I'd be happy to put little blurbs- either about family or if you would like to discuss an island topic or recount some island memories.

EVERYONE! Please don't forget to put the word 'ISLAND' somewhere in your subject line when you email me! I know I'm missing some of your emails because there is no subject line, or it is 'hi' or something similar and I delete it. I get A LOT of spam and don't take the time to check every email- I look at my subject lines. Thank you.

BRICKWALL

Please email me with your Brick Wall questions!!

"My brickwall: I just can't find where Catherine Lyons Ledford, b. 1826 Ireland, died and was buried. Her husband, John, died in Toledo, OHIO 24 Dec. 1887 and buried in the Old Sacred Heart Cemetery.
I had someone check the Lucas County death book-nothing. Also searches have turned up nothing. I'm open to ideas."

Island Immigration

This section of the site is a bit of a mess, any ideas on how to make it better would be welcome..or to get people to submit to it. :) I've been thinking lists of family names, where from and when immigrated to the islands...
Something like this is started for Wolfe Island, see the link Early Wolfe Settlers. The Howe Island 1901 census immigration link is also helpful, perhaps something similar will be done for the other islands.
Information on what ships your ancestors came on would be greatly appreciated! So far we only have one family who was found in a ship list.

Thanks to you all, I look forward to hearing from any of you!

COMING VERY SOON!

-The 1912 William Wells Bamford diary is transcribed and in proofreading stage. It will be added to the site shortly.
-Wolfe Island school information is coming in at a steady pace thanks to AM Benson, Theresa Broeders and the Wolfe Island Womens Institute. I am putting the information online as quickly as possible. Lots of new class photos to be added soon!
PLease email if you have old photos to share!
(I now have a new option where you can upload your photos to a photocenter and I can download them from there-this saves the bother of bounced emails--ask me about it if you are interested.)
COPIES of articles and photos can also be post mailed to me for me to transcribe/scan to add to the site. Contact me for details.
