An inquest was held last evening at Portsmouth, 2 miles from Kingston, on the bodies of Eliza Jane Treleven and Joseph Bray, who drowned the evening previous, when a skiff upset, while carrying a load of potatoes from Amherst Island. A young man named John Lang, aged about 18 years, left town on December 31st to pay a New Year's visit to his parents on the Isle of Tanti, and has not been heard of since. Two of his cousins, Moyle and Treleaven, were drowned when crossing the ice to the Isle of Tanti, in March of 1833. (Kingston Chronicle)

On Sunday, June 6th, at the rectory, Amherst Island, aged 47, the Hon. Col. Thomas Radcliff. He followed the Duke of Wellington through the whole of his Peninsula campaigns, during which he received 8 wounds � and in the late rebellion in Canada commanded the Militia of the Western Frontier and captured the piratical schooner "Ann". He leaves a widow and 8 young children.

William R. Kilpatrick, Amherst Island

William R. Kilpatrick, 49, of Stella, who died recently at the Kingston General Hospital following a 12 month illness was buried in Glenwood Cemetery on the Island. He was born here, a son of the late Arthur Kilpatrick and his wife, the former Leith Cochrane. Mr. Kilpatrick had been employed on the Amherst Island Ferry for the past 10 years. He attended St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, at Stella. Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy McMaster, a daughter, Laurie, of Hamilton; and three sons, Warren, Kevin, and Mark, at home. Pall bearers were former employees of the ferry: Capt. Earl Williard, Capt. William Bulch, Edward MacCormick, Ross Hitchens, and Ben Wemp.

On Sunday, June 11, 1978, James Francis Fleming, formerly of Amherst Island, beloved husband of the late Marion, dear father of Arthur of Kingston, Donald of Lyndhurst, Robert of Thunder Bay. Foster father of Sharon of Toronto, and Douglas of Woodstock, and also survived by one sister, Edna Sigsworth of Kingston, and seven grandchildren. Resting at the James Reid Funeral home, Cataraqui, (Counter at Highway no. 2) after 2 p.m. Tuesday. Service in the Chapel, Wednesday, June 14 at 1:30 p.m. Interment; Glenwood Cemetery, Amherst Island.

Sadly missed by his daughters Shirley Martin (Orvin) and Winnifred Jamieson (the late Raymond), daughter-in-law Syke, 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Robert J. Died peacefully at Rideaucrest Home on Saturday, 13 March 2004, in her 85th year. Much loved sister to Phyllis Myers. Dearly loved mother of David (Lise), Stuart (Pam), Marcia (Stan), and Judy (Fred) Kiar. Predeceased by sons, Michael (Gloria) and Greg. Freda will be sadly missed by her grandchildren. At Freda's request No visitation will occur. Following cremation a private family service will take place. Interment in Glenhaven Memorial Gardens. David Filson died at Amherst Island, July 26, 1896, age 86. Was born near Ballyhalbert Co., Down, IRE., came to Canada in 1860, married in IRE. Miss Jane McClyment, had 5 children, the eldest Hugh died in 1867, Robert died Oct. 1895, youngest son is Henry, daus are Mrs. John Marshall and Mrs. R. R. Burleigh, both of Amherst Island. His wife dead 17 yrs.

Suddenly at the Kingston General Hospital, Tuesday, October 8. 2002, in his 54th year. Much loved husband of Gloria. Survived by his much loved mother Freda and predeceased by his father Hector. Sad1y missed by his children Jason (Shelley). Marnie (Steve), Marla, Lawrence, the late Trevor. Fondly remembered by his 8 grandchildren. Also survived by his brothers and sisters David (Lise), Stuart (Pam), Marcia (Stan), Judy (Fred) and his late brother Greg. Fondly remembered by several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. Michael will be sadly missed by his many friends, especially Ed, Leonard, Kalvin and Paul.
Resting at the "James Reid Funeral Home" (Counter Street at Highway 2). Family and friends will, be received on Friday. October 11, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. 'Funeral Service to be held in the chapel on Saturday, October 12. 2002 at 1 p.m. with Interment in Gananoque Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Kingston Regional Cancer Centre in Michael's memory.


Obituary: From the Heritage,
Wed. 27 July 1977
On July 1, 1977, Robert W. CUMBERLAND passed away peacefully in St. Mary's on the Lake Hospital where he had been a patient since September 1976 as a result of an accident last August when he suffered a fractured hip.
Mr. Cumber land was born in Aylmer, Quebec on December 22, 1895 and spent the first 24 years of his life on Amherst Island. A son of the Manse, his father, Rev. James Cumberland, was minister of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church there for almost 40 years until his retirement and removal to Kingston.
Robert Cumberland received his early education in the Island school suster, where he attended S.S. 2 Elementary School after which he was a member of the original class of Stella Continuation School, founded in 1908. Following his graduation from secondary school, he studied extramurally for a period agyre which he attended Queen's Univeristy from which he graduated with Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in 1923. His Thesis entitled, "Pioneer Settlements in the Bay of Quinte," was published in the Queen's Univeristy Bulletin and dealt with pioneer problems in Ontario, Following graduation he pursued graduate studies at Columbia Univeristy in New York.
In 1928 Robert Cumberland married Elizabeth DAMMANN, a former resident of Pembroke, Ont. Shortly thereafter he was appointed an Instructor in English at Cooper Union in New York City, living at Staten Island, N.Y. Retiring in 1961 from this institution as Professor Emeritus, he returned to his native Canada, living in retirement in the 'floating bridge" area, Bath Road.
His years of retirement were filled with pursuit of his hobies in the way of writing; topics of historical importance wer of particular interest to him.
During his student days he wrote, "Verse and Translation," and contributed over the years to magazines, periodicals and newspapers. He was also an avid gardener and a great lover of flowers.
Funeral services were held in St. Paul's Church, Amherst Island, conducted by Rev. Allen Hobbs of Beulah Church, assisted by Robert Elford, followed by interment in Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Pay Amey, W. Bruce Caughey, Leslie Head, C.J. Dark, Robert Marceau and Albert Simkins.

Obituary WELBANKS, FRANCIS THOMAS (Amherst Island)

Francis Thomas Welbanks, of Amherst Island, died in Kingston General Hospital on Nov. 13, 1991 after a two-month illness. He was 81.
He was born in Brighton, Ont., a son of Anna Beatrice Fritz and Elburn Welbanks, and attended public school in Prince Edward County. He later moved to Amherst Island where he went to high school and continued in the fishing business with his father. He worked briefly as a miner in the Sudbury area.
Mr. Welbanks married Nessie Eleanor Glenn in 1937 and in 1949 they began farming dairy and later beef cattle on the south shore farm which has been the family home ever since. He served as councillor on the island from 1938 to 1945, when he became Township Clerk, a post he held for 30 years. He retired from commercial fishing in 1980 because of ill health. He was interested in history, particularly marine history and the history of Great Lakes boats, and served as a source of information for several authors and historians. Some of his memories appeared in Booze, Boats and Billows. He was a longtime member and past master of the Maple Leaf Masonic Lodge No. 119 in Bath, past grand steward of the Grand Lodge of Canada and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, as well as a Shriner. He was a member and trustee of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. He is survived by sons Eric Francis and wife Linda (Hicks), of Nicholson's Point, and Theodore (Ted) Harold and wife Heather (Sedore), of Amherst Island; grandchildren Susanne, Cheryl, Shawn, John and Rick; sister Irene Glenn and brother Howard, both of Amherst Island. He was predeceased by infant son Glenn Elburn.
The funeral on Nov. 16 was conducted by Rev. Lindsay McIntyre. The pallbearers were Avery Brown, Melville Filson, Keith Miller, Allan Caughey, Ted Wemp and Eric Miller. Interment was at Glenwood Cemetery, Amherst Island.

Obituary GLENN, GORDON ROBERT (Amherst Island)

Gordon Robert Glenn, of 958 Woodbine Rd., died on Sept. 21, 1992 at Hotel Dieu Hospital after suffering briefly from amyloidosis, a rare disease. He was 76.
Mr. Glenn was born and educated on Amherst Island, a son of Robert Douglas and Olive Henderson Glenn. After working as a travelling custodian for the Lennox and Addington County School Board, as part-owner of Juanita's Nursery School in Amherstview and farming on Amherst Island, he worked as a mold-maker at Lumi-Craft, Ltd. He retired five years ago.
He attended St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and helped at church functions, including the annual garden party. In earlier years, he served on the Amherst Island school board. He enjoyed meeting students at the family ceramics shop, where he operated the kiln. He also liked making rice-paper lampshades, hooking rugs, and making chili sauce and pickles. He is survived by his daughter, Juanita of Kingston; sons Francis of Blenheim and Murray of Ottawa; grandchildren Robert and Margo Glenn of Blenheim; sister Thelma Howard of Amherstview; brother Marshall of Amherst Island; aunt Edna of Kingston; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and wife Nanetta L. Strain.
The funeral on Sept. 24 was conducted by Rev. Jim Williams and was followed by cremation. Interment was at Glenwood Cemetery, Stella, Amherst Island.

OBITUARY Evelyn Grace (Wemp) Taylor (AMHERST ISLAND)

Evelyn Grace (Wemp) Taylor, a lifelong resident of the Kingston area, died on Sept. 5, 1991 at The Village Green, Selby, after a two- year illness. She was in her 83rd year.
Mrs. Taylor was born in Conway, Ont., a daughter of Herb and Anita Bulch. She attended Bath Public School. She lived for a time on Amherst Island and attended St. Alban's Church in Stella, and, while living in Napanee, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. She belonged to the Anglican Church Women. Mrs. Taylor farmed and worked as a nurses' aide, and was especially interested in gardening and travelling.
She is survived by her children, Leigh Wemp and wife Doris, of Odessa, Brenda Hatton and husband Alan, of Napanee, Grant Wemp and wife Gail, of Shelbourne, and Duane Wemp and wife Linda, of Toronto. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Herbert, Valerie, Lance, Alan, Derek, Barent, Lisa and Jamie Lyn, and sisters Marjorie Storring and Pearl Paul. She was predeceased by her parents, husbands Albert Taylor and William Wemp, and daughter Shirley.
The funeral was conducted on Sept. 7 by Rev. Ken Blaber. The pallbearers were grandsons Herbert, Derek and Barent Wemp, Bob Rochefort, and Lance and Allan Hatton. The flower-bearers were her granddaughters Valerie Wemp-Rochefort and Lisa and Jamie Lyn Wemp. Interment was at Glenwood Cemetery, Amherst Island.

Donald Bert Wolfreys (Amherst Island)
Donald Bert Wolfreys of Lindsay died suddenly on July 10, 1992 at Port Huron Hospital, Port Huron, Michigan, U.S.A.
Mr. Wolfreys was born in Toronto, a son of Bert Wolfreys and Mabel Louisa Shepherd, and was educated in Richmond Hill. After serving in the RCAF in the Second World War, he joined the Metropolitan Toronto Police, where he was employed until his retirement as Staff Sergeant in 1973. Following retirement, he lived in the Balsam Lake area, where he owned and operated an ice cream shop and craft store at Rosedale. In January 1991 he remarried and moved to Lindsay.
He was a member of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Association, Metropolitan Toronto Police Pensioners' Association, Metropolitan War Veterans' Association, the Moose Lodge Lindsay, and the Sebring Touring Club, Sebring, Fla. U.S.A. He attended St. Paul's Anglican Church, Lindsay. He was an enthusiastic member of various marching bands, including the Air Force Band, the Metropolitan Police Associatioin Band and the Pipes and Drums of Lindsay, of which he was Drum Major. He is survived by his wife, Leona McLean (Lang); children Donna Jack and Frank Bayley of Cameron, Garth Wolfreys of Rosedale and daughter-in-law Tina Wolfreys of Oshawa; step-daughters Brenda (Mrs. Barry Verwey) of Lindsay, Janice Lang of Havelock and Shirley McLean of Lindsay; grandchildren Susan McDonald, Sandra Jack, and Heather Gorrill, all of Lindsay, Michael Jack of Huntsville and Justin Wolfreys of Oshawa. He is also survived by step-grandchildren Dione McLean and Tina Hickson of Janetville, Kimberley and John McLean of Lindsay, Belynda, Naomi, Brennan and Nadine Verwey of Lindsay, Pamela Campbell of Norwood and Erin Campbell of Havelock; four step- great-grandchildren; brothers Art of Orlando, Fla., U.S.A., Lloyd of Amherst Island, Ernie of Bradford, Leonard of Bath, Ellis of Harrowsmith and Howard of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his parents, wife Ethel M. Park, and brother Henry. The funeral on July 14 was conducted in Lindsay by Rev. Richard G. Miller. Pipers at the funeral were Ken Grace and John Hunter. The pallbearers, members of the Pipes and Drums of Lindsay, were Reid Torrey, Kevin Drysdale, Carle Parliament, Mark Gray, Richard Crawford and Norman Ward. Interment was at Fenelon Falls Cemetery.
