E. G. FINLEY of AMHERST ISLAND VICTIM
Car Driven by Dr. H. C. Burleigh of New York

Walking on the Gananoque Highway about four miles east of Kingston, Ephraim Garfield Finley, about 60 years of age, suffered injuries which caused almost instant death when he was run down by an automobile driven by Dr. Herbert C. Burleigh, of New York, who was on his way to Bath to take over the practice of Dr. Northmore.
The fatality occurred about 7:45 oclock on Wednesday night. Finley, who was a native of Amherst Island, formerly resided in Kingston, but had been working all this winter for William Finnegan, a farmer living six miles east of Kingston. Finley, it is believed, was on his way to the Finnegan home when the accident occurred.
Traffic Officer Percy Dowsley and Provincial Constable Joseph Nelson, of Kingston, are conducting an investigation, and Dr. C. W. Bennett, coroner, of Kingston, will hold an inquest.
The accident took place almost opposite the farm of W. O. Swartz. Finley suffered terrible injuries. Both of his legs were fractured and also one arm. His body was picked up on the south side of the roadway, about two feet from the shoulder of the road, and was removed to R. J. Reids undertaking parlour.
Dr. Burleigh was driving west from Prescott on his way to Bath, when the accident occurred. It is stated that Finley was walking east on the roadway and it is reported that the weather was very cloudy and that there was ice on the shoulder of the roadway at the point where the accident took place.
Finley was unmarried and was a native of Amherst Island, being a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Finley. Prior to going to work for Mr. Finnegan on the Gananoque Highway, he had resided on King Street in this city, and was known to many Kingstonians. His next of kin was given as Mrs. E. W. Lane, a cousin, residing at 113 York Street, in Kingston. Dr. Burleigh was the owner of the car he was driving. It was a Buick coach, bearing the license P-3434, New York. It is stated that he was the only occupant of the car when the accident happened.

WALTER WEMP FELL INTO THE WATER WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CROSS TO KINGSTON WAS VETERAN RESIDENT

Stella Walter Wemp, a well-known resident of Amherst Island, met an untimely death from shock and exposure in the icy waters of the Bay of Quinte on Friday afternoon.
The unfortunate man had planned to walk across the bay and go on to Kingston to transact some business. The weather turned quite mild on Thursday, making the ice very slippery and there was considerable water on it. Mr. Wemp was advised by members of his family to wait until the water on the ice froze again, but he nevertheless attempted the trip. Charles McMullen, who knew of Wemps attempt to cross, heard several cries for help, but was unable to see the man. He secured and rope and board, however, and accompanied by his brother, Edward McMullen, set out in the direction from where the cries came. It took about 20 minutes, because of treacherous footing on the slippery ice to come to a point about a mile from shore, where they found a crack in the ice about 12 feet wide. They then discovered the body of the unfortunate man in the water. He was taken out as speedily as possible, but life was found to be extinct.
Whether he slipped into the water or attempted to cross on cakes of ice is unknown.
The McMullen brothers, with the assistance of Clifford Glenn, removed the body to the shore and later to the home of Charles McMullen. Dr. H. C. Burleigh of Bath was summoned and pronounced death due to shock and exposure.
The late Mr. Wemp was particularly well-known in the township by young and old. He was a farmer by occupation and resided at the south shore. Previous to coming to Amherst Island, he resided at Ompah and at Weyburn, Sask. He was born on Amherst Island, a son of the late John D. Wemp and was 72 years of age. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Miss Gladys Wemp of Calgary, Alta. and one son, Montray, at home. An elder son, Oswald, was killed in the Great War. Donald Wemp of Viking, Alta. and Arnold Wemp, of the island, are brothers.
The largely attended funeral was held on Saturday from his residence to St. Albans Church where the service was conducted by the rector, Rev. Thomas Leech. Interment was made at Glenwood Cemetery. Pall-bearers were Ernest Filson, George Bulch, R. J. Marshall, George Cork, E. Fleming and John Richards.
