HIRAM CALVIN DIED IN TORONTO TODAY
One-Time Warden of Frontenac and Federal MP

The death occurred in Toronto today of Hiram Calvin, late of Garden Island and Kingston in his eighty-first year. The deceased was for many years one of the most prominent citizens of the County of Frontenac and served as warden of the county in 1865 and 1866 and again in 1868, representing Garden Island which was then a township. Mr. Calvin was also a Federal Member of Parliament for Frontenac, 1892-95, refusing the nomination in 1896. Although nominally a Conservative, he followed an independent course and voted against his party on tariff and the Manitoba School Question.
He was born on Garden Island on April 6, 1851, the son of the late D. D. Calvin and his wife Marion Breck. He was brought up in the atmosphere of shipping and boat building and eventually entered the service of the Calvin Company. Later he became president of this very flourishing organization and retained that position until the company retired from business about eighteen years ago. He then went to live in Toronto. The late Mr. Calvin kept up his Kingston and Garden Island connection, spending his summers at his home there. He was a staunch Baptist and took a leading part in building the present Baptist Church in this city. He was, until two years ago, a governor of Kingston General Hospital, and was when he died a trustee of Queens University. At one time he was vice-chairman of the school of Mining and Agriculture here.
The late Mr. Calvin is survived by his wife and seven children, Mrs. Walter Eoyd of Ottawa and Miss Hilda Calvin of Toronto, D.D. of Toronto, J.D. of Montreal, H.A. of Toronto, R.M. of Montreal, and C.C. of Toronto.

MEMORIAL TO LATE HIRAM A. CALVIN

At the First Baptist Church yesterday morning the service took the form of a memorial to the late Hiram Calvin, who had been a life-long member and generous supporter of this church. After briefly reviewing Mr. Calvins life, Dr. Freeman took as his text the words of the prophet What doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God?
I believe that these words fitly describe the ruling purposes and the manifest character of Mr. Calvins life, said Dr. Freeman. Unquestionable integrity marked his life in all his dealings with others. His business was part of his religion. He lived not only justly but generously. He loved mercy and dealt graciously. Service was the keynote of his life. This was manifest in his concern for the physical, moral and spiritual welfare of the little community on Garden Island as well as for the wider community which he sought to serve in various ways. It was particularly manifest in his devotion to the church, both in personal service and financial support. He was always in his place in public worship and his children with him. He never said I will pay. Let others pray and work He took a share in all church activities. He walked humbly with God and among his brethren. A genuine experience with God marked his life. Those who knew him best found it easier to believe in God and in the supreme value of moral and spiritual things. Being yet he yet speaketh, bidding us run well the race set before us.
Appropriate hymns were used in the service and Mrs. Stenton sang The City Foursquare.

THE LATE ALEXANDER BRECKENRIDGE
- A sad gloom was cast over this community on Easter Sunday morning when it became known that the venerable old gentleman, Mr. Alexander Breckenridge, of Little Creek, had passed away. Although his death was not unexpected for some time past, he held all his faculties till near the last. He was born at Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland, on March 10th, 1810, and accordingly had passed the century mark. He indeed had a wonderful intellect and memory for a man of his age, and his many friends more that enjoyed many hours listening to his tales concerning the Highlands of his dear old Scotland. With his wife, Miss Robona McGill, who preceded him to the grave some twenty seven years ago, and three of his family, he set sail for Canada in 1854, and after a very rough three months voyage he landed in Kingston, and took up farming near Colinsbay, and thence to Amherst Island when it was yet but a forest. He resided at Little Creek on the farm upon which he died for the past thirty five years, most of which he was very active, and was widely known in the district. Some five years ago he received his second sight, and it was wonderful to hear him read without any aid from glasses. Although he never took any active part in politics he was always relied upon as a staunch supporter of the Liberal party. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Mr. Conn conducted the funeral services at his home on Tuesday, March 20th. His family consisted of Alexander Jr. and David who died some few years ago, John of British Columbia, and James and Annie, on the old homestead. His pallbearers were Messrs. J. F. Smith, Alf. Kent, Jas. Dillenbeck, G. M. Card, A. Herrington and A. Bowen. The funeral was largely attended and his remains were placed in the Western cemetery vault to await interment in the family plot.

Mary Lavina Eves - On Thursday last there passed to rest the soul of Mary Lavina Eves. Mrs. Eves, whose maiden name was Orr, was born in the township of Ernesttown, near Wilton, and was married twenty years ago to James Eves of Simcoe Island. Nine years ago they removed to the Dupuis farm in Kingston township, near Westbrooke. For seven years Mrs. Eves has borne the miseries and suspense of a lingering consumption; about two months ago hemorrhage set in and hastened the end. She bore her troubles with unfailing patience, and leaves behind the sweet memory of a devoted wife and mother, a quiet and kind neighbour and a devout Christian. Her husband and six children are left to mourn, two girls and four boys, ranging in age from four years to nineteen. The funeral was held at the house on Saturday, by Rev. Rural Dean Dibb and the very large attendance testified to the general esteem in which she was held.

EVES- Entered into rest at Amherst Island on Sunday, Sept. 15th, 1946, James Eves, age 87 years. Resting at the home of his son John Eves, Amherst Island. Funeral service in Christ Church, Emerald, on Tuesday afternoon at 2 oclock. Friends and acquaintances respectfully invited to attend. Interment in Anglican Cemetery, Cataraqui.
