LEAVIS - At the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston, on Monday February 10th, 1941, Patrick Leavis in his 75th year. Resting at the Keyes-Franke Funeral Home, 49 Colborne Street. Funeral Thursday morning at 9:45 o�clock to St. Mary�s Cathedral where requiem high mass will be sung at 10:00 o�clock (D.S.T.) for the happy repose of his soul. Interment at Howe Island in the spring. Friends and acquaintances respectfully invited to attend.
He was the son of the late Simon Leavis and Elizabeth Cox. Deceased was a life-long member of St. Philomena Church on the Island.
Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Mary Byrne, Howe Island; Miss Fanny Leavis, at home; Mrs. Elizabeth Ryan, Wolfe Island; and Mrs. Irael Garragh, Howe Island; one brother, James, Howe Island.
The funeral took place Thursday morning from the Keyes-Franke Funeral Home, Colborne Street to St. Mary�s Cathedral where a requiem high mass was sung by Rev. J. S. Ryan P. P. of Camden, a nephew of the deceased. The remains were placed in St. Mary�s vault. Interment will take place on Howe Island in the spring. The pall-bearers were Raymond Garragh, Elroy Garrah, Ira Garragh, James Byrne, John Leavis and Kenneth Martin.

Howe Island, February 10 - The funeral of Mrs. Margaret Garrah, 82, of Howe Island, was held February 10th from the home of her son, Ira Garrah, Howe Island, to St. Philomena�s Church, where requiem high mass was sung by Rev. W. A Dwyer. Rev. Dr. E.J. Way was present in the sanctuary. Internment was in St. Philomena�s cemetery.
Pallbearers were William White, Lester Leavis, Matthew Kane, Philip Ryan, Frank Garrah and James Byrnes.
A native of Howe Island and a daughter of the late Simon Leavis and his wife, the former Elizabeth Cox, Mrs. Garrah had spent the whole of her life on the island. She was a member of St. Philomena�s Church, the Catholic Women�s League, and the League of the Sacred Heart.
Predeceased by her husband, Mrs. Garrah is survived by four daughters; Mrs. Evelyn Martin of Kingston; Mrs. Loretta Quinn of Howe Island; Mrs. Arnold Dorey (Frances) of Gananoque; and Mrs. Edward Murchie (Mabel) of Brewers Mills; three sons, Ira, at home, and Raymond and Elroy, both of Kingston; and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Ryan, Wolfe Island. There are 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. R.I.P.

MAHONEY
Mrs. James Mahoney, (Mary Clarke) wife of Captain James Mahoney, died on Saturday evening, June 15th, 1918 at her late residence, 196 King St. W. Mrs Mahoney was 64 years of age and was the daughter of James Clarke and Bridget Duffy of Kingston. Mrs. Mahoney was born on Howe Island but the family had resided in Kingston for many years. The funeral will be held on Tuesday morning at 9:30 to Saint Mary�s cathedral where solemn requiem mass will be celebrated. Burial will take place on Howe Island. Surviving Mrs. Mahoney are her husband, Capt. J. Mahoney, five daughters, Mrs. Matthew Cox, Howe Island; Mrs. Thomas (Anne) Fitzpatrick, Philadelphia, NY; Mrs. Ross Jolly (Agnes), Ballston Spa, NY; Mrs. Catherine La Vote, Kingston; Mrs. Alexander Scrutton (Margaret); Miss Theresa Mahoney, New York City; one son Patrick at home. She leaves a wide number of friends and relatives to mourn her loss.

ELROY ISRAEL GARRAH
Elroy Israel Garrah of Barrenfield, an expert cheese maker in Frontenc County during the 1940's, died Dec. 14th in Hotel Dieu Hospital. Mr. Garrah, 58, had been ill for a month.
Funeral service was held December 16th from Gordon Tompkins Funeral Home to St. Mary's Cathedral. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery. Mr. Garrah was born on Howe Island, a son of the late Margaret Leavis and Edward Garrah. He lived for a time in Gananoque and for 17 years in Kingston. He worked as a stationary engineer. In 1942 he won the Whig-Standard Trophy for the highest average scoring cheese maker in Frontenac County.
He is survived by his wife Doris; three sons, Maurice, Ronald and Richard; two daughters, Mrs. Marie La Rush and Mrs. Rita Cross; three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Martin, Mrs. Frances Dorey, Mrs. Mabel Murchie; and two brothers, Raymond and Ira.

HOWE ISLAND FARMER JAMES LEAVIS DIES
Howe Island, January 23 - James Leavis,
a farmer on Howe Island, died at the age of 83 recently. Mr. Leavis was born on the Island, the son of the late Simon and Elizabeth Leavis and he had lived here all his life, except for nine years spent in Chicago Surviving are his widow, the former Helen Grace Balzell; one daughter, Mrs. John Pickett (Elizabeth), Howe Island; two sons, John Leavis,Gananoque and Lester Leavis, Howe Island; also 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. There are also three sisters, Miss Frances Leavis, Gananoque, Mrs. Margaret Garrah, Howe Island, and Mrs. Elizabeth Ryan, Wolfe Island.
The Rev. T. J. Larkin celebrated solemn requiem mass at St. Philomena's Church. Interment took place in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were James Byrne, William White, Joseph Welsh, Cecil Foley, Ira Garrah and John Pickett. - R.I.P.

Peacefully at the Kingston General Hospital, on Tuesday, September 21, 2004, in his 78th year. Beloved husband of 30 years to Patricia (Hollingsworth). Loving stepfather of Debbie and grandfather of Carrie Machin and her husband Michael, Tricia Davis and Jonathan Randall. Great grandfather of Seth Huffman. Brother of Sister Mary Byrne, Theresa Loyst, Betty Knowles (Douglas) and Helen Ernest (Ron). Predeceased by his parents James and Blanche Byrne and his three brothers, Bernard, Lawrence and Michael. Missed by many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Central Chapel of the Gordon F. Burial was on Howe Island for Mrs. Raymond (Dorothy) Garrah, 60, who died suddenly December 27th at her residence 40 Wright Avenue.
She was born at Titusville, PA a daughter of the late Claude and Gertrude Shephardson. Employed as a registered nursing assistant, Mrs. Garrah had been a Kingston resident for 40 years.
Surviving are her husband, Raymond; a son, Raymond Eugene Garrah of Camden East; four sisters, Mrs. Rudolph (Gladys) Erickson of Franklin, PA.; Mrs. R. L (Grace) Wenner of Mount Jewett, PA.; Mrs. George (Anne) Schettine, of California; and Mrs. Robert (Eva) Anderson of Tittiouti of PA.

Funeral of Miss Frances Leavis, 91, of Howe Island, who died in Kingston, took place from the residence of her Howe Island nephew, Ira Garrah, to St. Philomena's Church where requiem high mass was sung by Rev. T. J. Larkin, who also recited committal prayers at the interment in St. Philomena's Cemetery, Howe Island.
The pallbearers were Kenneth Martin, James Byrne, Elroy Garrah, Howard Dorey, Lester Leavis and Hugh Gibson.
A life-long resident of Howe Island where she was born, Miss Leavis was the daughter of the late Simon Leavis and Elizabeth Cox. She was active in church affairs belonging to the Catholic Women's League and the League of the Sacred Heart of St. Philomena's Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Garrah, Howe Island, Mrs. Elizabeth Ryan, Wolfe Island, and several nieces and nephews.

Member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4177 and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #92
After a several year battle with diabetes and kidney failure, Ken Martin passed away on January 19th at Kingston General Hospital at the age of 77 years. He was born on Howe Island on December 11th, 1922 to William and Evelyn Martin. He received his education at Gananoque, Oshawa and Brewer's Mills Separate Schools. Ken joined the RCAF in January 1943, serving in Canada and Labrador until discharged in October 1946.
Following the war he was employed at the Gananoque Light and Power Company (now Granite Power) as an industrial and diesel engine mechanic, until retiring in 1989.
Ken was a charter member of the 1000 Islands Council of the Knights of Columbus (4th degree) having joined in 1956. He was Past Grand Knight, Youth and Council Activity Chairman, Former District Deputy, Ontario Conferring Degree Officer from 1963 to 1969, and was involved in various youth and summer camp activities. Ken was also a 53 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 92 where he served on numerous committees and was the 1st Vice President. When not involved with K of C or Legion activities, Ken enjoyed boating on the St. Lawrence River.
Ken is survived by his wife Ferne (Hampton) of 54 years, son Paul (Pascale), brother Raymond (Eunice) and grandchildren Jeremie, Raphaelle and Brady.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Tim Bard, Dr. William Irwin, the nurses in the dialysis unit at K.G.H., all the S.A.I.L. drivers and to all friends and neighbours for their cards, kind words and donations to the Diabetes Foundation or Heart and Stroke Foundation, and to Tompkins Funeral Home for their compassionate and professional service.
Funeral Mass was conducted at St. John's Roman Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with Father Fleury officiating. Pallbearers were Wilfred Garrah, Morris Garrah, Howard Dorey, Ron Knapton, Stan Tozer, and Bill Dunlop. Interment was at St. John's Cemetery, Gananoque.

MICHAEL FRANCIS QUINN
The funeral of Michael Francis Quinn, 64, who died at his home on Howe Island, after an illness of seven years, was held from his late residence on Wednesday to St. Philomena's Church, Howe Island. Requiem mass was said by Rev. W. A. Dwyre.
Mr. Quinn, who was the son of the late Joseph Quinn and his wife, the former Elizabeth Kane, had been a farmer all his life and was well known and respected in farming circles. A member of St. Philomena's Church, he belonged to the Holy Name Society and the League of the Sacred Heart. He is survived by his wife, Loretta Garrah, a son, John Francis, both of whom reside at home; three brothers, Clarence and Patrick Quinn both of Howe Island, and Gus of Toronto.
Interment was in St. Philomena's Cemetery where Father Dwyre said the prayers at the grave.
Pallbearers were William White, Joseph Norris, Ira Garrah, Thomas Marshall, Earl Prior and Bernard Byrnes.

Funeral of Mrs. Ira Garrah, the former Mary Augusta Murphy, Howe Island, who died at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, was held Saturday morning at 8:45 o'clock from the residence of her mother, Mrs. Joseph Murphy, 513 Frontenac Street, Kingston, to St. Philomena's Church, Howe Island, where a requiem high mass was sung at 10 o'clock by Rev. W. L. Terrion, PP. Interment was made in St. Philomena's Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Eugene Garrah, Raymond Martin, Howard Dorey, FO. Charles Driscoll, Cecil Murphy and PO James McGarvey.
The late Mrs. Garrah was born in Kingston, daughter of Mrs. Joseph Murphy and the late Mr. Murphy. She received her education at Notre Dame Convent, Kingston and Kingston Business College. After her education she joined the Civil Service in Ottawa. Six years ago she married Ira Garrah and moved to Howe Island where she had been living since. She was a member of St. Philomena's Church, Howe Island and a member of the Catholic Women's League.
Surviving are her husband, four children, Joseph, Michael, Wilfred and Mary, all at home; her mother, residing in Kingston; one brother, Thomas Murphy, Kingston, and two sisters, Anne and Nora, Kingston.

January 30, 1908 Death of Mrs Jeroy � Howe Island

Mrs Adeline Jeroy, died of heart disease, on Wednesday afternoon, at the home of her son-in-law, Charles Whitcomb, 284 Johnson Street, after a year�s illness aged sixty-nine years. She was a daughter of the late Joseph Preveil of Howe Island. She was married there and later lived in Pittsburg township and Gananoque,. After the husband�s death six years ago, she removed to the city. She is survived by three sons, Julius, Joseph and Allan of Gananoque, and two daughters, Mrs C Whitcomb, Kingston, and Mrs Amelia Amo, of Gananoque. The remains will be taken to Howe Island for interment.

An old and highly respected resident of Howe Island passed away on Saturday. Feb 1st, in the person of Mrs James Driscoll. The deceased was born on Howe Island seventy-two years ago. She is survived by six sons and two daughters; James, of Warren; Patrick, of the police force, Kingston; Daniel of Kingston; John of Howe Island; Mrs James McMaster, of Kingston, and Elizabeth at home. John Cox, of Howe Island, is a brother, and Mrs James Norris of the same place, is a sister. The deceased was a Roman Catholic in religion. The funeral took place on Monday. The six sons of the deceased acted as pall bearers.

Mrs. Thomas Garrah (Elizabeth Agnes Clarke)

On Saturday morning last, the death occurred of Mrs. Thomas Garrah, one of Howe Islands, most esteemed residents, whose passing caused widespread sorrow throughout the whole district. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clarke, who were pioneer settlers, on the island. The deceased had been ill for sometime, is survived by her husband, four sons, and six daughters; Thomas Jr., Cecil, Bernard, Mrs. Lasha, Kingston, Mrs. William White, Howe Island, Gertrude, Kingston, Muriel, Monica and Verna at home. The funeral on Monday, was largely attended. A solemn marequiem mass was sung, at 9 AM in St. Philomena's Church by Rev. Father A. J. Hanley, of Gananoque.

Howe Island - The death occurred last week of Mrs Alex O'Brien at the home of her daughter in Toronto. Deceased had been a resident of Kingston until the death of her husband fourteen years ago, after which she moved to Toronto.
Surviving are six daughters, Mrs Ethel Kent, Rochester, NY; Mrs L J Joenig, Omaha, Neb; Mrs F J LaChance, Howe Island, and Mrs H E Doyle, Mrs R Treloar and Miss Helen O'Brien all of Toronto, and two sons Alex of Brockport, NY and Joseph of Detroit, Mich. The funeral was held in Toronto Monday morning and interment in St Mary's Cemetery, Kingston.

Gananoque, May 29, The funeral of the late John Clarke was held on Wednesday morning from his late residence to St. John's church, where Requiem Mass was sung by Rev. Father Carey. Pallbearers were, A. Silcott, N. Kenny, G. Flood, J. Flood, J. Phillips, and A. Matthews. In addition to his wife, Tiece Cadue, he is survived by four sons, James, Augustus, and Matthew of Gananoque, and Joseph of Windsor; also one daughter Mrs. E. Spann, Wyndotte, Windsor, (should read Michigan) also predeceased by Marguerite, (Mrs. M. J. Beaseau. Interred in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Gananoque.

Mrs. M. E. MacDonald, Gananoque, The funeral of Mrs. Margaret MacDonald 85, took place from the residence of her sister Mrs. Noah Gauthier, North Street, Gananoque to St. John's Church where Requiem Mass will be sung by Rev. Father R. E. Carey, Interred at St. John's Cemetery, Gananoque.
Born on Howe Island, Mrs. MacDonald, was a daughter of the late James Amo and his wife the former Elizabeth Pelow. She came to Gananoque at an early age, and later was well known as a dressmaker. She was married to the late John MacDonald, who predeceased her some 16 years ago. She was predeceased by eight brothers, James, Peter, Alex, William, Nelson, Frank, and Joseph and one sister Mrs. James Gagnon. Mrs. MacDonald, who died early Friday morning at Hotel Dieu Hospital was a member of St. John's Church and CWL. Bearers were six nephews.

GANANOQUE - The funeral of Mrs. T. E. Clarke, 83, was held Thursday from Tompkin's Funeral Home, to St. John's Church. High mass was conducted by the parish priest, Rev. Father, R. A. Carey, assisted by Rev. F. P. Meagher of Perth and Rev. W. Hamilton, St. John's curate. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery.
Mrs. Clarke a resident of the district all her life died Tuesday in Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston. She had been in failing health for the past five months.
Born at Howe Island, she was the daughter of Joseph Cadue and his wife the former Anne Hunt. She had made her home in Gananoque since leaving the island.a number of years ago.
She was a member of the Church of St. John the Evangelist. Mrs. Clarke was predeceased by a son, James, who died a short time ago. Survivors include, three sons, Matthew, and Augustine, Gananoque, and Joseph, Syracuse, NY, a daughter, Mrs. R. Nickle (Mary) of Detroit, Michigan, a sister Mrs. D. Abeles, a brother James Cadue, Howe Island: and several grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

Late Mrs Thomas Norris

A Resident of Howe Island for Many Years Mrs Thomas Norris died in the House of Providence, on Friday night at 10:30 o�clock, aged eighty-four years. The deceased was born in Ireland, and her maiden name was Bridget Cox. She was a sister of Ex Reeve John Cox, of Howe Island. She came to Canada when young, and settled on Howe Island, where she lived until last fall. She was twice married first to the late Richard Foley. Reeve John Foley, of Howe Island, is her son by that marriage. Her second husband, who predeceased her twenty years ago was Thomas Norris. By this marriage she had three sons and two daughters: James, Patrick and Thomas, Mrs Robert Simpson, Howe Island and Mrs V P Hunt, Rockport. The deceased was a Roman Catholic in religion. The funeral will take place on Monday at 9:30 am, and a solemn requiem mass will be sung by Father Kehoe.
